Volume 5 Chapter 13 Year End Progress

”Pigyah! Bea is not a child! I demand proper compensation for my labor!”
Tch, what a hassle.
”Hmm. Compensation for labor, huh… What kind of payment should I ask from Ms. Beatrice, who has caused quite a few mistakes and increased my workload…”
Milly stood behind Beatrice, dark circles under her eyes.
It seemed that Beatrice had made quite a few mistakes in her 30 minutes of work.
Beatrice’s ability regarding office work was thought to be below that of a cat.
”MilMil! Shhh! If you say that, it makes Bea sound useless…”
”Ms. Beatrice… Is candy a good enough compensation for your labor?”
I grabbed Beatrice’s head, who was trying to shush Milly, and turned her towards me, offering a refreshing smile with a piece of candy.
”…Yes. Candy is fine. Yay…”
It felt a bit wooden, but since she helped out, I intended to give her a little something.
”By the way, this might be a bit late, but what is the New Year Festival? I’ve heard it’s a holiday when everyone takes a break from work.”
”Ah, it was your first time, right, Kent? The New Year Festival is the day when the kingdom’s calendar resets. I’ve also heard it’s the birthday of Demon Lord Orphée Bleu. To put it practically, on the New Year Festival, your age changes, and you receive one skill point.”
”Oh… So the cards are rewritten uniformly on the New Year Festival, rather than being added to your birthday; they all increase together at the start of the year.”
”Exactly, so for 8 days starting from the New Year Festival, people across the kingdom celebrate. By the way, there’s a reason for those 8 days; it’s so that each of the 8 tribes of the True Demon Kingdom can celebrate the Demon Lord’s blessings.”
”Oh… I didn’t know that. I guess everyone is looking forward to it.”
”Yeah, it’s a big festival for everyone. Oh, speaking of which, isn’t it about time for the date to change?”
Prompted by Milly, I looked at the clock mounted on the wall, and it was nearing the time for the date to change.
”5… 4… 3… 2… 1… Happy New Year. I’m counting on you this year too, Milly.”
”Yes, this year I’m definitely going to have Kent’s child!”
Milly was pumped, making a fist at the thought of becoming pregnant.
Then, the log lit up.
──Your age has been increased. Age 15 → 16 years
──Job level up: citizen LV 10 → 11
──Skill point received: 1 point
Just as Milly said, the age increase raised me job level and added a skill point.
Yet, there were still a discrepancy between me actual age and the card’s basic job (birth).
It wasn’t clear if it was because I was a person from Another World and Lost One, but it seemed that age increases were being processed normally.
”Oh! My age has changed!”
While I was happily checking me card, the office door burst open, and the on-duty officer rushed in.
”Your Excellency Kent! This is bad! A request for reinforcements from Abyss Vena!”
The officer came in with heavy breath and reported something incomprehensible.
”A request for reinforcements from Abyss Vena? I don’t understand. Is it a monster attack?”
”N-no! It seems Margrave Heido’s castle in Abyss Vena was suddenly attacked by General Gertroud. Currently, they have destroyed the bridge and are holed up.”
More incomprehensible words spilled from the officer’s mouth.
It was reported that General Gertroud, deployed at the western fortress, was attacking her adoptive father.
Had Gertroud, pushed too hard, become desperate and attacked…?
”No way! I haven’t heard such reports from Nikka either. Gertroud was reported to be bedridden… Kent, let’s mobilize the army… While we go with Ludmila’s ‘Black Wing’ squad to my adoptive father’s side.”
”Alright, understood. Everyone wake up! I and ‘Crimson Bride’ and ‘Black Bullet’ will use ‘Black Wing’ to head toward our father-in-law!”
Beatrice, who hadn’t shined in paperwork, showed her motivation and began waking everyone up.
”Everyone, it’s a big deal! War! Wake up now!”
I glance at Beatrice while calling the officer who came to report.
”You need to run to Kondrad. Urgently inform him to assemble the troops and head out. However, since it’s an urban battle, please make sure to minimize any damage to the residents!”
”Yes! Understood. I will inform Commander Kondrad right away.”
The officer salutes and then runs out.
In his place, my mother-in-law enters the office.
”Mr. Kent. What’s all this commotion?”
”It seems General Gertroud has attacked my father-in-law. While he is holed up, I believe my father-in-law is still safe, and even if General Gertroud has a force, it should be no more than 2 thousand. I think there are about a thousand men stationed in the castle, so I don’t believe he will be captured.”
”So, General Gertroud has gone mad…”
My mother-in-law smirks.
Then, she beckons Talia, who was in the office.
”TalTal, it’s your turn. General Gertroud’s madness. How should we use this card?”
Talia, who approached at her beckoning, returns a smirk in response to my mother-in-law’s question.
”Well, as a lower strategy, we could demand an apology and compensation from the kingdom. A middle strategy would be to accuse Gwain in connection with the ‘Travers Incident’ and unify the southern kingdom forces. The upper strategy would involve unifying the military and transferring the western garrison, as well as strengthening the power base by granting Margrave Heido the right to confer the Baron title in the south…”
Both of them began to assess what they could extract from Gwain using my father-in-law as leverage.
”I want to go for the upper strategy, but… I wonder if he will agree…”
”If we can capture the mastermind and suppress things quickly, Gwain might relent… After all, it’s a scandal involving his own general. Also, we need a direct negotiation channel with His Majesty.”
”Ah, both of you… Just remember, my father-in-law is under attack. We need to hurry.”
I decided that the scheming of the cunning Prime Minister and the devious Strategist would have to wait until after the situation was resolved.
After finishing our preparations, we headed to the garden square to board the two0 Dragonewts led by Ludmila.
In the plaza garden, Ludmila, having received an urgent message, transformed into her dragon form and waited with the Dragonewts.
”Lord Blackdagger, I am ready. Now, please ride on me.”
”Alright, we’ll protect my father-in-law until Kondrad arrives. I feel bad for the Dragonewts, but this is a city skirmish. We can’t attack carelessly and involve the residents. We just need to prevent the enemy’s invasion. If Gertroud isn’t a fool, he’ll surrender the moment he realizes the surprise attack has failed and he’s surrounded.”
Even though they were the enemy, I felt a resistance in giving the order to kill these soldiers of the same kingdom.
I unintentionally gave vague orders.
I never imagined this hesitation would lead to a catastrophe.
