Rising Monk V2c98

Volume 2 Chapter 98 Request For Reinforcements From Izerland Fortress III

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Christy climbed to the highest spire of Main Castle alongside Head Magician Natasha.

They needed to create a hole in the barrier—just enough to send a letter to the Knights of the Sun, who were likely waiting beyond the fortress.

Outside, McCutchen and his band of brigands encircled Main Castle. The plan was to temporarily lift the barrier, allowing Oswald’s knights to rush in from the town streets. Once inside, they would drive back the enemies attacking Maribel.

The letter’s contents were carefully worded, dressed in embellishments, but the message remained clear.

Christy released the homing pigeon into the open sky. As she watched it disappear, her gaze drifted downward to the army below, unease tightening in her chest.

A single image surfaced in her mind—one of a young man.

 (Kian…)

When Christy had last said goodbye to that young man, he had handed her a ‘promise’ magic scroll.

If she dripped blood and ink on it to imbue it with magic power, a message would reach Kian and the Adventurers’ Guild.

If Christy asked Kian to risk his life to protect Maribel, he would have no choice but to do it.

 But──.

Should she really call him to a castle in such a situation?

To tell an individual to fight until death in a besieged castle felt like asking him to die just to buy time for them.

 Yet, Christy was anxious.

At a time like this, she wished for her lover Kian to be by her side.

(I’m sorry, Kian. But I can’t help but feel anxious. I’m sorry for being weak. I’m sorry for being selfish.)

Apologizing in her heart, she activated the ‘promise’ scroll behind Natasha, who was chanting magic to seal the hole in the barrier.

It might be a good nuisance for him.

If McCutchen’s army were to drive back Oswald’s knights and crash into the castle, she wanted Kian to fight with all his might.

There was also a strange belief that he might somehow manage it.

(I’m sure I’m not calm at all.)

She watchs a bird-shaped magic scroll slip out through the hole in the barrier.

With this, the kind-hearted Kian would be thrown into a deadly situation because of Christy’s selfishness.

He might even die as a substitute to protect Maribel or Christy.

(I’m sorry, Kian. …If you look like you’re about to die, I will die with you. That way, I won’t be scared.)

She turns her back to the spire with a heavy heart.

She thought she must look terrible right now.

At this rate, she’s unworthy of being Kian’s woman.

Just now, Christina Famille had sunk to the level of the worst plague woman.

…Somehow, she felt like she understood why she had never made a single friend other than Maribel.

Being alone means that everyone thinks you’re someone they don’t want to be friends with.

In Christy’s case, she was a terrible person who couldn’t think of others, so no one wanted to be her friend.

Far from being someone who could shed blood for others, she was the kind of person who made others shed blood for her, so everyone kept distancing themselves.

 ”The worst…!”

Tears welled up in the eyes of the black-haired witch.

She wiped her tears with her fingers.

(I’m sorry, Kian. But… please, help me!)

* * *

By evening, the barrier surrounding the Main Castle had begun to show cracks here and there.

McCutchen was clearly aware of this while commanding the catapults and log troops.

He didn’t know if Natasha and the others had finally eased up.

Or if they had simply reached their physical limits.

The barrier would break with just one more push.

Then, they would crash into the castle and take down the Owl.

(The problem will arise after we defeat Owl. Everyone except Maribel can be r*ped and killed, but Maribel must be retrieved while still a virgin. Virginity is a status symbol among the nobility before marriage.)

Since he has forbidden looting in the town, the mercenaries will expect to be allowed to loot and r*pe inside the Main Castle.

Fortunately, McCutchen has a group of hired knights serving him, replacing Waterman’s knights.

They should be able to control any chaos that might arise.

”Now, this is the tricky part… Hmm?”

As the old steward’s mind began to turn towards post-war arrangements, he suddenly felt a massive amount of magic power disappear from the giant outer wall surrounding the fortress city.

Some of the mercenaries surrounding McCutchen also noticed the change and looked back towards the town.

(The protective barrier on the outer wall has disappeared! Maribel must have called in the ‘Knights of the Sun’ from outside!)

 He knows the numbers.

 Oswald has a hundred.

Renaud has less than three hundred.

 The other knights are insignificant.

So, in total, there are about four hundred of them.

Moreover, powerful fighters like Oswald, Aisha, and Renaud are reported to have returned to their territories.

There shouldn’t be any magicians capable of teleportation, and using birds to send messages would cause a time lag.

”Report! A knight with the flag of a wheat stalk and a spear has crossed the lowered drawbridge and entered the town!”

 ”What? How many?”

The mercenary captain beside McCutchen shouted.

”A hundred, huh? The flag of a wheat stalk and a spear is the emblem of Oswald’s knights. Confirm, did you see the flag of a red bull and a black spear?”

The old steward pushed the mercenary captain aside and asked the scout, who shook his head.

 ”No, I didn’t see it.”

”So only a hundred knights from Oswald’s forces have come for assistance. Captain Gig, send a message to the idle mercenary unit on the left flank to prepare for interception. We don’t care about the knights’ status as Vassal Knights. Tell them they will receive 50 silver coins for each head they take!”

The mercenaries’ eyes change color at McCutchen’s words.

Fifty silver coins for just one kill.

 It’s such an easy job.

The problem is there are only a hundred enemy heads, so they need to hurry, or there won’t be any profit left.

”If we take down 2, we get a gold coin! This is generous!”

”Yeah. If you understand, quickly eliminate Oswald’s dogs. “

(And make sure to thin their numbers a bit. It’ll be fine as long as there’s enough strength left to massacre Owl and the Head Magicians inside the castle.)

Ideally, 6 hundred strong troops should remain after the battle.

It’s better for the beggars and the half-hearted to die.

McCutchen turned to the magicians among the mercenary group.

”You all will continue to maintain the interfering Wall that prevents teleportation from the castle. Don’t get any strange ideas. You’ll be well compensated, so focus on your work.”

Seeing the magicians nod in response, the old steward let out a satisfied sound.

This way, even if Natasha and the others remove the barrier preventing teleportation, Maribel won’t be able to escape using Christina’s teleportation.

To be thorough, he had no intention of holding back on the payment at this point.

Suddenly, a loud cheer erupted from the front.

 He instinctively turned his gaze.

A joyful expression spread across McCutchen’s face.

 ”Oh! Finally!”

The barrier wall surrounding the Main Castle finally crumbled in part due to our catapults.

 It’s over.

McCutchen felt a wave of relaxation wash over him.

 It’s over.

All that’s left is to kill Owl.

Before reinforcements from Oswald and Renaud’s homeland arrive, they managed to capture the Izerland fortress in just under half a day.

 (We won…!)

When the old steward was convinced of this──

 ”──────What…?”
