Volume 3 Chapter 14 The Cost Of Repairing The Magic Sword
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”I’ll report this the next time I meet Her Excellency. You might as well struggle in your debt hell.”
”I’m sorry, but could you please spare me? My livelihood is at stake too, and I have no choice but to resist any unfounded slander, even if it’s from Sir Renaud.”
”Oh? You think you can silence me with your strength?”
Renaud laughed, his mouth splitting into a wide grin.
”You’re not getting carried away just because you defeated Oswald, are you? I’ve been itching to devour you myself, and I’d welcome a duel. When shall we fight?”
”…No, it’s not about a duel.”
”I know that the Windsong Blade has been damaged.”
”Huh?”
”Her Excellency came to me directly, asking for my help. She was quite worried that you had to fight because of herand that your weapon was worn out. Kuku…”
”──Then let’s get to the point. I’ve prepared ten gold coins. Would you please repair it for the sake of Your Excellency?”
”Now, what shall I do?”
”Please.”
”Ten coins won’t cut it. It’ll be 20 gold coins.”
”Ugh… Fine. Twenty it is. I can’t pay a single iron coin more.”
”Good, we have a deal──did you think I would say that? Fool.”
Renaud smirked maliciously, looking down at Kian.
”I absolutely despise you. You sneakily outsmarted me in a duel and snatched away my freshly crafted masterpiece. Who in this world would be kind to someone like you? On top of that, you broke the sword I generously gave you. Understand that the only reason you’re still standing there, unscathed like the Windsong Blade, is thanks to Her Excellency’s plea. And once you understand, get the hell back to East End, you bastard.”
”Can’t you please repair it?”
”You’re persistent. ──Hey, Plum! You’re not doing it right! Get more involved! …Yes, that’s it.”
”……”
The Dragon Knight ignored Kian and began explaining.
It was his fault for breaking the magic sword, and it was understandable that the unfriendly Renaud wouldn’t be inclined to offer repairs.
Still, there was nothing to do but stand there in disbelief, feeling utterly lost.
”────”
There was no use just standing there, so he made his way back into the crowd.
Homolka greeted him with a bright smile, completely unaware of his mood.
”Wow, that was a great performance! The ‘Knight of Dragon Scales’ Renaud de Châtillon and the ‘Crescent Moon Knight’ Kian of Izerland battling it out! That was a rare sight!”
”Haha… thanks.”
”…? You don’t look so happy.”
”Well, you see… actually──”
”──Hmm? Did my old man turn you down?”
A voice that sounded just like Renaud’s called out from behind Homolka.
The Archbishop turned around with an “Ah” and introduced the newcomer.
”Lord Kian, this is Lord Guy. You may know him; he’s Lord Renaud’s eldest son.”
Just as the words indicated, a large man with messy black hair, much like Renaud’s, stood there.
Unlike Renaud, however, he was well-groomed and clean-shaven.
As mentioned by Homolka, Guy was Renaud’s child and the de facto political leader of Châtillon County.
He usually conducted various political affairs in place of Renaud from the fort in Châtillon.
Kian had become acquainted with this man during a previous meeting in Châtillon County.
Guy stepped forward, his pitch-black eyes fixed on Kian, just like Renaud’s.
”Archbishop Homolka, Kian and I are already acquainted. We’ve met before.”
”That’s right. You must have crossed paths during the discussions with the Nakash family.”
”That was an impactful meeting. I felt like I was facing a top-notch warrior since Lord Owl.”
”A warrior? Is Lord Guy planning to consume Lord Kian sexually?”
”No, Archbishop. ──It’s good to see you again, Sir Guy.”
”Ah, it’s been a while, Lord Kian. I hear you’ve received your knightly accolade while we haven’t seen each other. Congratulations!”
Despite his rough demeanor, Guy performed the Knight’s salute with impeccable form, much like Renaud.
Though taken aback, Kian instinctively returned the Azrael-style greeting.
”Thank you, Sir Guy. I plan to keep striving forward.”
”Yeah. ──So? Back to the subject, you were turned down by my old man, right? Wasn’t the Windsong Blade repaired?”
”…Is it a public fact among you all that my main weapon is broken?”
”No, I didn’t know. Is that Windsong Blade the weird sword you were clashing with Oswald in the arena?”
Homolka tilted his head.
Kian nodded.
”Yes, that’s right. Actually, during the last battle, Oswald managed to gouge it about halfway.”
”Hmm? If you’d like, I could introduce you to a smith I know. He makes swords for the Church Knights.”
”I’ve actually already checked all the notable smiths in the fortress.”
”Huh? Is that so? Then what about the smith Warren?”
”Oh, I went there first. It’s the high-end shop in the merchant district, right?”
”Yes, exactly. They design our weapons there. But, I see. The only smith I knew was Warren, and if he’s unable to help…”
”Repairing or modifying a magic sword requires specialized skills and experience. Leaving it to an average smith would only lead to disastrous results.”
Guy said this, smiling gently at Kian.
He continued, showing off his bright white teeth.
”Well then, if you don’t mind, should I take over the repair instead of my old man?”
”Wait, what?”
”Oh, if Lord Guy will do it, I think it should be fine, right? I’ve heard he’s as skilled a smith as Lord Renaud. ──But what about the political duties in Châtillon? Repairing a magic sword isn’t something you can finish in a day, is it?”
”Just as the Archbishop said, I haven’t been able to do any blacksmithing lately, and I’ve been piling up all this pent-up frustration. Nakash was thrown out of the political stage after the last fall of the Twelve Divine Generals, and the new guy is a moderate. The mountain’s been crossed, so I should be able to hole up in the forge for about 5 days without any issues.”
”Sir Guy, is this truly all right?”
”Ah, the Windsong Blade is that old man’s pride and joy, right? Then I’d love to decipher everything from the magic language to the magic array and tinker around with it. It’s just the kind of play to take my mind off things.”
”No, this magic sword is like my partner, so I’d rather it not be treated as a mere toy.”
”Of course, I’ll handle the work properly.”
Guy continued to gaze at Kian.
”What will you do? Do you want me to repair it?”
”If you’re a blacksmith who can handle a magic sword, then by all means. But how much will it cost? I’m ashamed to say I don’t have much money to spare.”
”Hahaha. You wouldn’t expect an adventurer to catch gold from the poor. As payment for repairing the magic sword, I want you to complete a Quest for me. How about it?”
Guy flashed a cunning smile similar to Renaud’s, narrowing his eyes.
Homolka, listening nearby, raised an eyebrow and said, “Ah, so that’s your aim, huh?”
”…Could you perhaps tell me what the content of that Quest is first?”
”Indeed. There are 2 personal Quests I want you to undertake.”
Guy raised 2 fingers, crooking them one by one.
”One is a Quest in the underground arena at the casino in Châtillon County. The other is a Quest to exorcise a beautiful female ghost known as the ‘Night Crier’ that appears every night in a fishing village near Châtillon Fortress.”
