Volume 10 Chapter 6 Fallen General

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I mentioned Kent because I felt he has a strange talent.

I heard from Yuri that he often gives up command to his subordinates.

Most generals would never just hand over their power like that.

I don’t have the courage to trust all my soldiers to others.

But when I hear he gives command in battle and fights like a common soldier, I think he’s a fool.

Yet, he has won big 3 times, so it can’t just be luck.

”Isn’t it too much to praise him just because he’s married to Miriallia?”

”Kent seems to have hidden abilities… Maybe he really is the reincarnation of Demon Lord Orphée Bleu, as Flamil says…”

I don’t really believe he’s the reincarnation of Demon Lord Orphée Bleu, but there are old documents saying Lady Fortesia used a reincarnation magic based on the secret art of Orphée Bleu.

So, I can’t completely deny Kent could be a reincarnation.

”I can’t believe someone more capable than Sir Yaalan is here on this Demon Continent…”

Yuri seems to underestimate Kent, but if I look at what he has done in the last year and a half, I’m sure my view is not wrong.

A normal person can’t become a king in just over a year.

Even with help from Miriallia and Arbalest, it wouldn’t go this well.

 He has luck.

I can say he has terrifyingly good luck.

If he wanted, he could control the Demon Continent in a few years.

But he seems not very interested in politics or power, lacking the ambition that comes with rising to the top.

”Kent Blackdagger might be my biggest obstacle to success…”

 *Gwain’s Perspective

”That Mild! He really planned to betray us! He sent a messenger to give up military control, and then he cut ties and ran to Iluska where Yaalan is waiting.”

I slammed my fist on the table.

On the table were letters taken by Sven’s spy from the enemy’s spy.

Summed up, the letters promised to help take the 3 territories of Footland, Esche, and Helstahl after capturing Iluska.

Mild’s signature was on there too.

”So, General Mild might have been working with the enemy during the fall of Daracallia… Perhaps he moved while I was busy with the coup in Capital City. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have ignored Mr. Lord of Mild and ambushed Daracallia.”

Just like Sven said, when Daracallia was ambushed by the Black Dragon Dukedom, that guy was nearby and didn’t help.

He just waited for me to return from the northeast.

He plays a careful game, but if he had gathered troops back then, he could have outnumbered the enemy.

Once in the strong defense of Daracallia, he could have fought well.

But no, he chose to be a spectator.

”Grr!! I was nice to him! So he knew about the surprise attack in the recovery battle!”

”Probably so. General Mild’s troops were mostly unharmed. He might have planned to take down Sir Gwain right there. If he had turned against us then, we would have been in big trouble.”

Sven’s words made me feel sick with anger.

That guy is the heir of the Dracul family, known as the Kingdom’s Vampire.

I thought keeping him close showed I’m the top ruler of the Demon Continent.

I never imagined he would repay my kindness with betrayal.

”Mild, you bastard! I’m so pissed!”

”And what’s worse, both Malte and Denise, who were supposed to keep an eye on Mild, are now missing. They might even be dead…”

I had left Malte and Denise, my succubi, in charge of Mild’s guard. Now, it’s possible that Mild killed them when he escaped.

”For now, find the both of them!”

 ”Yes, sir!”

Sven silently vanished from the office.

With Mild’s army turning on Yaalan, our northern defense is in bad shape.

But, I don’t have a capable general to handle it.

That’s because I’ve sent too many people to take down the ‘Kingdom Liberation Front’ and secure the northeast.

”Should I give up… or should I go put out the fire myself…”

After our last campaign in the northeast, we’re short on military talent. We’ve also lost valuable soldiers in the battle to take back Daracallia.

Because of this, our military hasn’t been able to recover quickly.

The battle with Gertroud at this northern fortress also left many of my competent succubi dead, contributing to our current shortage.

 ”Damn it!”

He kicked the desk, calling for a nearby clerk.

The clerk appeared, dodging the fallen desk, and he shouted at them.

”Send a message to the defense teams in Fortland, Esse, and Helstall, and in Daracallia! Tell them to hold their ground! Anyone who runs will be executed! They can collect taxes from the people! Tell them to hold out for one month! I’ll bring reinforcements in one month!”

 ”Y-Yes, sir!”

The clerk, seeing his expression, scurried out of the office in fear.

”…If I can hold out for a month, I should be able to gather the Lynthia forces and get them here…”

 *Mild’s perspective

The moment I met the messenger from Lord Gwain, I understood everything.

The messenger’s face showed mockery and disdain towards me.

I knew Lord Gwain had lost trust in me, and I had to act fast or my life would be in danger.

So, I took my sword and beheaded the messenger.

”W-What are you doing?! That’s Lord Gwain’s messenger!”

Marte was shocked by my sudden action.

But Denise picked up the letter the messenger dropped and tossed it to Marte.

”Marte… It looks like Lord Gwain wants to get rid of us. If he returns his power, we might be free. We could end up guilty like the messenger.”

Denise had been with Gwain for a long time and understood that returning his power was the first step to execution.

”N-No! We have served Lord Gwain honestly! We worked hard as his useful tools. Denise feels the same, right?”

”Yeah, I feel the same as Marte. But, as someone who knows Lord Gwain well, I can tell we are just useless tools now…”

Denise’s face twisted into a pained expression as she spat out those words.

”I’m going to Yaalan’s side. What about you two? I bet you got a message from Yuri too, right?”

”Yeah, it seems they want me over there. Since I’ve been thrown away, I’ll live the rest of my short life for myself. What about you, Marte? You’re older, so your thirst must be worse, right?”

Marte glared at Denise after hearing her mention age.

 ”Shut up!”

”Yuri said if we join their camp, we will be free from thirst. I’m an incubus, so I don’t feel thirst, but I bet it’s tough for you, right?”

I know that as Malte gets older, she gets these urges to attack.

She’s scared of her thirst that she can’t control, and she knows she’ll become an Essence-Sucking Demon, killing normal men to satisfy it.

She knows this makes her a target for her own kind.

”It’s hard. I’m fighting the urge right now!! That’s why it’s so tough that I can’t see Sir Gwain!”

”Don’t give up. Sir Gwain attacks anyone he sees as an enemy. We might not like it, but Yuri’s place is the only one we can hide at.”

Malte sat down, looking like she had given up.

 Dunes gently patted her shoulder.

”Alright, I’ll move the army now. Sorry, but it can’t wait. I’ll leave the ones close to Gwain behind, so we’ll have about 2 thousand soldiers. Since Yaalan might check our footsteps later, let’s conquer Footland, Esche, and Helstahl as souvenirs and make them submit. The defense team is just a bunch of boondocks. Two thousand should be enough.”

I decided to move the army immediately, conquer the 3 northern territories Yaalan wants, and then head to Iluska with them as gifts.

”You’ve picked the two thousand soldiers to take, right? Should the ones left behind return to the northern fortress?”

”Yeah, that’s good. It’s a hassle if they chase us. Let’s have the remaining group return with a story about getting a recall order from the military messenger.”

We discussed our next move while glancing at the separated military messenger.

”Ah… what a mess… The carrier I built serving Sir Gwain is ruined… So, what does His Excellency plan to do with the supplies? How many months should we feed these two thousand soldiers?”

Malte was crying while looking up at the sky, but her mind had already switched to calculating how to feed the two thousand soldiers.

”Yeah, I guess we won’t feed them for at least a month. I’d rather not conscript them if I can help it… I don’t know how much Yaalan values me, but worst case, I can always push the True Demon Dukedom’s guarantee…”

”That will just cause trouble later, so no. We have a symbol from Sir Gwain, so let’s trick them into thinking we are reinforcements and get supplies from the troops of Footland, Esche, and Helstahl.”

”…Reinforcements, huh? That sounds good. They’re dumb, so we can easily take them down. All right! Let’s go with Malte’s plan. We will head out as reinforcements for the north defense. We’ll stick to that story on the way.”

Denise laughed loudly at Malte’s idea.

”Haha! Reinforcements! Yeah, we’re definitely reinforcements. But for the True Demon Dukedom army led by Yaalan!”

Malte Foilgen, a 42-year-old succubus from the Dream Demon Clan, was a former subordinate of Felia.

She was great at paperwork and support tasks.

She had red hair and thick glasses but was still beautiful.

However, she had recently started worrying about her looks more than before.

Denise, a 35-year-old succubus from the Dream Demon Clan, was a soldier with over 20 years of experience and countless battlefields behind her.

She had been in Gwain’s unit since she was a minor and had kept his favor until today.

Because of her background, she was not a Noble.
