Chapter 666 The Fierce Battle of Helena’s Squad
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
(Helena’s POV)
”I bet… right now, the Clan house in Famière is having a big party…”
”Frieda Team came back at night, so we could have left the next morning, right?”
We were in the first room after going down to the 19th floor.
We were checking our gear after killing 2 Greater demons, the monsters in that room.
Machua Bernsteel, the Porter, and Yori Hunzelman, the Elf magician, were sighing and complaining.
”Yeah, you’re right. …If we knew Frieda Team was coming back at night, we could have joined the party at that garrison bar.”
”Don’t complain. We were supposed to ‘wait for Frieda Team to return and then enter the labyrinth in shifts’. We can’t get drunk and party while we’re waiting.”
Aoi Henselt, a swordsman from the East, agreed with them while wiping the blade of her katana.
Ernestine Flick, the Ranger who’s the sub-leader of Helena’s team, told him off instead of me.
”But, Erne… In the end, we left the next night after the party. I wanted to join too…”
Alica Bese, the other magician, was sitting down and fiddling with the hem of her blue robe.
”It can’t be helped. When we get back from this exploration… I’ll treat you all.”
I sighed and said that, and Lola Letz, the giant Tank who was checking her big shield, perked up.
”You promise? Okay… I’ll drink until I drop.”
”You and Lola, don’t drink too much!”
Ramona Scheer, the dwarf Fighter, stood up with her double-bladed axe, and I quickly told them to be careful.
Watching that exchange, Vianca Rosenmuler, in her heavy knight armor, sheathed her sword and stood up with a laugh, holding her shield.
”The equipment check is done. Captain Frieda… Shall we move on?”
”Yes, let’s. After we defeat the monsters in the next room, we can set up camp there for the night.”
I held back my own excitement to celebrate our success in the Great Labyrinth with Mr. Hiroya and the Famière people, deciding to focus on heading to the next room with everyone.
* * *
(The floor boss on the 19th floor… If we can just get past this…!)
If we defeat it, I can fulfill my promise to Mr. Hiroya to reach the two0th floor.
(I knew from the information beforehand… But I never expected it to be this tough…)
The floor boss on the 19th floor is a ‘Salamander.’
Arica, our magician who specializes in support, cast ‘Slow Down’ on it and gave us ‘High Agility.’
Yori, in charge of protection magic, used ‘Ultra Protection: Water’ to shield us from the heat, filling the area with her ‘gift’ of ‘Continuous Healing.’
Even though she’s a porter, Machua, who is in charge of planning, has everything perfectly organized.
But──
”No way! Our attacks aren’t getting through!”
We all jumped at the Salamander when its flames weakened for a moment, but our attacks were blocked by its tough scales.
I heard the shout of Ramona, the dwarf fighter, as she slammed her heavy double-bladed axe down at its feet.
I also used my strong magic, ‘Herculean Strength,’ swinging my bastard sword with all my might, but I couldn’t break through its scales.
The only one dealing some damage to the Salamander was Elne, the ranger, with her dual small crossbows.
The mithril arrows, infused with water magic, seemed to hit its head, but they were too small to cause any serious damage.
Even though we were slowed down by ‘Slow Down’, it was time for the flames to grow stronger, so everyone in the vanguard was supposed to keep their distance from the Salamander.
”What are you doing!? Get back, Ramona!”
”One more hit… right at the same spot…!”
Ramona spun around and swung her double-bladed axe, aiming for the ground again.
In that moment, flames erupted from the Salamander, hotter than ever before.
”Oh no…!?”
Even with Protection Magic, being that close to those flames…
”Gah!”
A scream came from behind.
”Lola!?”
”I’m… fine… really…”
The dwarf fighter who got caught in the flames quickly jumped back, trying to put distance between herself and the Salamander.
She seemed to be okay.
But I was worried about our tank, Lola.
I shouted her name, and when I turned to look, her large body was wrapped in a deep green light.
She was probably under ‘Continuous Healing’ and also receiving ‘Healing’ from Yori.
”I’m sorry, Lola! I pushed too hard…!”
”Don’t worry about it… this is my job…”
Lola, breathing heavily, answered while taking the damage that Ramona should have received.
Her ‘gift’ was ‘Sacrifice’.
It was a painful but perfect ability for a tank, taking on damage meant for her teammates.
The damage would have been deadly for Ramona, a dwarf, but Lola, being a giant, could handle it.
”You can’t push yourself too hard… we need to fall back for now──”
”Captain! The breath attack!”
At the shout of Aoi, the usually quiet swordsman from the East, I turned back to the Salamander.
The scorching heat that had filled the area was fading, likely focusing on its face now.
Its jaw was glowing red-hot above.
”It’s aiming for the rearguard… Lola!”
Vianca, shining red in her armor from the reflection of the salamander’s flames, dashed forward.
She slipped right into the path of the breath attack, ready to block it with her shield.
Lola was still healing, so she probably didn’t have the strength to hold her big shield yet.
”Arica, combine your breath with ‘Ice Storm’!”
”Got it! My Protection Magic can’t handle this!”
Behind the shield, Arica responded to Machua’s command.
I followed Vianca, heading straight into the salamander’s line of fire.
(I heard Mr. Hiroya cut through the breath of the magic dragon Goliath…)
Can I do it?
That question popped into my head, but I had to try to protect my friends.
I stood in front of Vianca, raising my Bastard sword high.
”Captain!? Th-That’s reckless!”
”It’s okay. Vianca, please support me from behind the shield.”
The salamander’s jaw slowly opened, flames flickering out.
As the flames grew larger and filled my vision,
”Ice Storm!”
Arica’s attack magic, which she wasn’t very good at, was unleashed from behind, and a swirling ice storm… was swallowed by the flames in front of me.
