Volume 1 Chapter 24-2 Dirty Fireworks

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Yeah, to be honest, I have a feeling about this.

An orc showed up in a forest that should only have goblins.

A group of goblins was running around in panic.

And most importantly, Lifia blew up part of the forest with her Spirit Magic.

That’s likely a big cause of the commotion.

I try to act calm as I walk into the guild.

 Nope, I know nothing.

As soon as we step in, the noisy hall falls silent for a moment, and all eyes turn toward us.

 Lifia really stands out.

Her golden hair, shining in the sunlight like transparent gold, falls to her shoulders, and her blue eyes sparkle like jewels.

The maid outfit she wears is clearly high quality, even to an amateur’s eyes.

The frills and beautiful silhouette make her cuteness stand out even more.

Of course everyone’s going to notice a beauty like this in a guild full of rough adventurers.

As the murmur among the adventurers returns, I can feel some glances sneak over to us now and then.

 That’s not all, though.

They send mixed looks of envy and surprise towards me, the guy walking with Lifia.

 Can’t say I hate it.

”Who’s that girl?” “So cute!” “Is she an elf?” “Who’s that guy with her?” “A noble?” “But he doesn’t seem very imposing.”

Hey, you in the back, stop talking so loud.

 ”Mr. Taro!”

Just then, someone calls my name.

I turn to see Tifi, the receptionist, rushing over.

She glances at Lifia with a surprised look, but quickly turns her attention back to me.

”Are you okay? I was worried since you came back late.”

”Yeah, I got chased by a bunch of goblins. But, as you can see, I’m fine.”

Tifi sighs in relief, her expression softening a bit.

I ask her why there’s so much noise in the guild, and she starts to explain.

According to her, a hero party attacked an orc village deep in the forest.

The orcs that escaped caused a panic among goblins and other monsters.

Now, the whole forest is in chaos.

Also, for some unknown reason, someone used powerful magic, which has the adventurers busy with investigations and countermeasures.

When I heard Tifi’s story, I thought about the boys I met before we left, the students who were summoned with me.

I wonder if it was them.

Thinking that their actions might have put us in danger, I got really angry.

 ”What a pain.”

I couldn’t help but speak my mind.

”Yes, we at the Adventurer’s Guild are honestly troubled. This time, it didn’t affect the villages, but some adventurer parties were injured.”

 Tifi looked sad.

It seems the Adventurer’s Guild is also unhappy with those heroes’ selfish actions.

They might be a powerful force for the kingdom, but they don’t care about others at all.

Can’t the Adventurer’s Guild complain to the heroes?

”It’s just a nuisance for us who fight on the front lines.”

 Tifi nodded deeply.

”You’re right. I’m sure they don’t realize how much their actions burden other adventurers. And, Mr. Taro, it seems you’re safe, but do you know anything? I’d like to ask for any information you have.”

When asked, I only told her that “I heard a roar like an orc” and that “goblins were running away in a panic.”

I pretended “I didn’t know” about the large-scale magic that cut through the forest.

I couldn’t possibly tell the truth.

”I see. Thank you for your hard work.”

 Tifi didn’t ask too much.

She probably doesn’t think we were the ones who did it.

 ”So, what about the request?”

 Tifi asked me.

 She meant the goblin extermination.

Originally, we went to the forest for that, but too many unexpected things happened.

”I defeated some… but I didn’t bring back the ears.”

Adventurers are supposed to bring back the goblins’ ears as proof of their defeat.

But honestly, I didn’t want to bring back those disgusting ears.

Especially since the reward wasn’t that important to me.

Tifi smiled wryly at my answer.

”I understand how you feel. Actually, I also avoid the work of confirming the extermination proof.”

And then, I whisper it out loud.

It seems that even for Guild staff, checking proof of subjugation is a task they’d rather avoid.

When I try to ask about monsters stronger than goblins, Tifi’s expression clouds over a bit before she speaks.

”Stronger than goblins? I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you that, Mr. Taro.”

 ”Why not?”

”Because you didn’t bring back proof of subjugation.”

”Isn’t that just for the reward?”

”It’s not just that. It’s also a way to show an adventurer’s skill. And for someone without a record, we don’t recommend going after dangerous monsters.”

Information on monsters stronger than goblins isn’t given unless you’re at least Iron rank.

Right now, I’m still stuck at the lowest rank, Wood.

It seemed like being able to prove I’d killed a goblin would have been enough.

”Of course, personally, I don’t doubt Mr. Taro’s word. But the Guild can’t recognize it without proof.”

 Troubled.

I can’t level up without hunting stronger monsters.

Are wolves and boars the only other monsters I could hunt?

Where’s the proof of subjugation part?

No matter where, it’s probably still gross and dirty.

Stumped by Tifi’s explanation, I blurt out without thinking.

”Um, is there any request that can help me level up without needing to bring back evidence like a goblin’s ear?”

There probably isn’t a request that convenient.

”There is, actually. There’s a perfect request for you, Mr. Taro.”

Her smile seemed to hold some deeper meaning.
