Some time passed.
The 3 of us lay on the bed.

The one who targeted her was the second son of a noble family, the Baron family.
”He was someone I couldn’t refuse.”
Tifi looked down a little and kept speaking.
”Even though he’s the second son, he’s still a noble. Someone like me being asked to marry into the family might look like an honor to others. But…”
There was a hint of giving up in her voice.
A baron, and the second son at that──lowest rank among nobles.
But for Tifi, a commoner, she probably couldn’t say no.
”That’s when I met Mr. Taro.”
A soft smile appeared on her face for just a moment.

Tifi’s smile grew a little warmer.
”You even accepted the job to get rid of the horned moles… Since then, you’ve been helping me so much.”
Gratitude clearly showed in her words.
From what she said next, I saw a piece of her past.
”Even at the orphanage, the horned moles were a big problem. They ruined the fields… The Father was really troubled. Thanks to Mr. Taro, everyone was so happy back then.”
I saw her eyes get a bit wet.
In them was gratitude, but also a faint doubt.

Tifi stopped for a moment, blushing slightly, then kept talking.

I could tell how much she struggled inside.
”So that’s how it was.”
I see now.
She kept her distance even as things got warm between us at the orphanage──that’s why.
Being forced into marriage by a noble, she couldn’t just give herself to another man.
Her actions made sense, and I understood.
But one question remained.
Who really attacked Tifi and why?

Besides, Tifi didn’t seem to refuse.
Then, who were the people who attacked her, and what did they want?
Was it something different from the Baron’s second son?

Tifi apologized in a small voice.
”Huh?”
”I didn’t tell you about this, and I… I had a relationship with you… I thought I might cause you a lot of trouble.”
Tifi’s voice was filled with worry.
The “trouble” she was talking about was probably the trouble with the nobles.
I stole her from the Baron’s second son, who was courting her.
If that fact came out, it might be troublesome.
”It’s okay. Besides, I’m the one who didn’t ask about the situation before we… did it. And…”
I said, looking her in the eyes.
”I told you, you’re mine.”
Tifi looked surprised for a moment, but then she smiled softly.
”…Thank you.”

But this is the path I chose.

Tifi raised her voice.
Her face turned a bit red, but she looked firmly into my eyes and continued speaking.
”I will do anything for Mr. Taro!”
Her determined voice made my heart feel even lighter.
”I see… Yes, thank you. Lifia, Tifi.”
When I answered like that, both of them smiled proudly and straightened their chests.
Their cheerful looks made me smile naturally again.
