Volume 3 Chapter 62 Something’s Wrong With Ramsey
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Behind them, the central street stretched out with the glow of numerous tavern lights.
Rean’s black gauntlet pushed open the front door, revealing the dim entrance of the Guild where business had wrapped up for the day.
”It’s okay~. I mostly recovered after sleeping.”
”I see. ──You are a vital healer and backup magician for ‘Lion’s Companion’. We really need you here for the big jobs.”
”Yes.”
Following Ninini, they stepped into the entrance.
Rean entered last, closing the door tightly behind him.
The noise from the bustling street outside faded away in a heartbeat.
By the way, Vestacia had collapsed.
”I’m so sleepy. It’s Rean’s fault for being reckless. Please report back later.”
With that, she retreated to her room in her sheer underwear.
She acted like a free spirit, but everyone understood her nature; for the 3 hardworking members, she was a great balance to the party’s atmosphere.
Sometimes, the direction of ‘Lion’s Companion’ depended on her mood, and no one complained about it anymore.
Rean usually didn’t scold Vestacia unless she was being really unreasonable.
”――――.”
(Yes. Sir Rean never tries to scold Vest. Especially not lately.)
Vestacia was indeed special.
”Oh, Lyr!”
As the 3 climbed the darkened stairs, Rean suddenly called out.
Lyritisse had just placed a foot on the landing.
She turned back with Ninini.
”Yes…?”
”Did you change your perfume? It smells really nice.”
”…! Oh, thank you! I’m glad you like it~.”
”Nyahaha! Rean, it’s kinda pervy to sniff the smell of a woman walking ahead and say ‘it smells good!’”
”Huh? Was that wrong? I was just saying what I thought. No hidden meaning.”
”I was happy you noticed. Thank you, Sir Rean.”
Getting encouraged by Lyritisse’s words, Rean nodded and walked alongside her. They reached the top of the stairs, standing before the Guildmaster’s office.
Before Ninini could place her hand on the door, Rean quickly stepped in front of Lyritisse and lifted her chin gently with his fingers.
”By the way, you’ve changed your makeup a bit.”
”…Well, lately my eyes have looked a bit tired, so I’ve been covering it up with some makeup.”
”I see. You don’t feel any lingering fatigue, right? If you sense any serious draining of your life force, tell me right away.”
”Yes, I’m fine.”
”……”
Rean lightly wrapped an arm around Lyritisse’s shoulder and slowly backed away.
He couldn’t give up, not with her sweet expressions, but it was too much to expect the thick-headed Rean to notice.
Lyritisse sighed inside.
Just then, Ninini said, “Excuse me!” and opened the door.
In the guild master’s room, an older man with a skeletal face and Irina, the receptionist, were waiting as usual.
”Ah, Ninini, Rean, Lyritisse, good to see you. Where’s Vestacia?”
Guild Master Friedrich stood up from his chair and approached them.
There were several candlesticks set around the room, making it brightly lit despite the time of day.
”Vestacia is resting in her room. She’s a bit worn out.”
”I see. She just got back this morning. Sorry for leaving you all with the guild’s labyrinth tasks.”
”No problem. With the Bloodsucking Kind swarming, all guild adventurers must unite to suppress them. If we don’t lead by example, the other advanced-rank adventurers won’t follow.”
”I wish others had that same mindset,”
Friedrich sighed with a wry smile as he signaled Irina to bring out the guild’s emergency request papers.
”Far north grain land──it’s a rescue request from Ramsey’s Adventurer Guild. It has been sent to both Izerland Fortress and our East End branch. All adventurers above advanced rank who are free are to be given an emergency quest.”
The 3 of them peeked at the request form Irina handed over.
Ninini, who ran her eyes over the message, perked up her ear and looked back at Friedrich.
”In Ramsey, the dead are rising…?”
”Yes. This is secret, but over there, a skirmish keeps happening between the northern hairy foreign tribes and Lord Owl, who is guarding on Lord Oswald’s proxy. Basically, it’s a state of light war.”
”If it’s war, I suppose it’s not strange for corpses to rise.”
”Exactly, Ninini. If the enemy shaman has a necromancer, soldiers who are killed can rise at any time. It’s just part of military action. That kind of thing is a job for armies or mercenaries. We’re just civilians whose job is to protect people from monsters.”
”But the damage is hitting civilians.”
Friedrich continued with a serious face.
”According to the other Adventurer Guild, it’s not necromancers but villagers who have been drained of blood and are rising again. The graves they buried are now empty, and every night, villagers who should be dead wander around hunting for new victims. It’s turning into a monster-infested hell. And, apparently, the damage is happening on both sides.”
”They say Bloodsucking Kinds have appeared who drain blood?”
”Yes. And they can turn their victims into the same kind of monsters. We’re still investigating, but since we haven’t confirmed their appearance yet, there’s talk it might be a new type of Remi Cain.”
”Remi Cain──that’s an advanced-rank Bloodsucking Kind, right? Especially powerful, lurking in the shadows. Might even get the national army involved.”
Lyritisse said, placing her finger under her chin.
Upon their return, they heard tales of a coup in Izerland last month, leaving the princess’s army vastly weakened.
It seems impossible to send any more men to Ramsey.
Oswald, a former ‘Knight of the Sun’, is said to be in service, and the Margrave’s forces are not to be relied upon.
Now is the time for the ‘Lion’s Companions’, the adventurers, to stand as the shield of the common folk against evil.
Rean stepped forward, the black armor on his back clinking softly.
”Are they the Bloodsucking Kind, forming allies? Just like the vampires of legend, and of noble class at that. The estimated rank for subjugation, depending on how many they’ve gathered, should be at least Rank 1. If we do not act, Ramsey will become a kingdom of the dead.”
”Indeed. The Western Church has already sent a request for aid. Likely, their inquisitors will be dispatched here soon.”
”Inquisitors—masters of hunting the dark kin. I’d like to coordinate with them, but they’re the type to believe that as long as they hunt heretics, anything goes. ──We should settle this before they arrive. With me and this magic sword, it’s possible.”
Rean said this, his gaze shifting to the black sword on his back.
Friedrich nodded in agreement.
”The magic sword ‘Soul Eater’ – it wields immense power against the undead and spirit forms.”
”Of course, even a normal person would be cut down in a single blow by this sword. Its might, which has devoured a massive, water-dwelling alligator, shall turn the Bloodsucking Kind to dust with but a scratch.”
”Reassuring. But let’s not use it carelessly. Yet, there’s no one but us here.”
”No, it is our duty as the most advanced-rank adventurers to quell disasters wherever they arise.”
”Yes, wherever Sir Rean goes, I shall follow!”
”You all seem lively… I’ve been going back and forth a lot lately, and it’s made me a bit tired. I need to restock supplies too.”
”Ah, if we’re facing a Rank 1 monster, we will need many items like Elixirs and blast potions. I won’t just charge in relying on the power of ‘Soul Eater’ without a plan.”
”Guild Master, do you know when the Inquisitors from the Western Church will be sent?”
When Lyritisse asked this, Friedrich paused for a moment before replying.
”When I spoke with Archbishop Homolka 2 days ago, he said all 12 Inquisitors are scattered across the continent working. The ones closest to us are ‘Shield of God’ and ‘Burier of the Cursed,’ and they are said to be west of the Royal Capital. Their work is likely not finished, so they shouldn’t be able to come here for a while.”
”That’s enough. ──Lyr, Ninini. Prepare everything within 5 days starting today. Gather weapons, armor repairs, and necessary supplies.”
”Understood!” “Aye aye, got it!”
”I will also call again to see if there are any other advanced-rank Adventurer parties available. I plan to support with some supplies here too, so you won’t have to worry about portable food and such.”
Irina, who had been silent next to Friedrich, finally spoke up.
”Please be careful, everyone. The scouts say that Lord Owl is fighting the ‘Storm Herd’ over there. I don’t know if it’s the Branch Family or the main family, but it’s strange that they have returned after disappearing from the public eye. I have a bad feeling about this…”
”We are the most advanced-rank Adventurers. We have faced similar situations before.”
Saying this, Rean turned on his heel.
Lyritisse and Ninini followed suit.
”Please wait for good news. We will take care of this quickly!”
