Volume 13 Chapter 3 The Cavalry Team’s Activity

 *Ane’s Perspective

I received an order from my father, the overall commander of the central hunting area, to scout the western side along the Town road. So, I led my cavalry unit ahead of the main force.

News had already arrived from the east that Lady Charlotte had obliterated the goblin village infested with goblin parasites, which boosted the morale of my troops.

Among them, Austronesia, who led the heavy cavalry unit, was the most motivated. She had been handed over as a prisoner of war from the Kingdom’s army, and though there was some back-and-forth with Sir Kent, she was eventually assigned to my cavalry unit, as I was in need of a cavalry officer.

She possessed the [Divine Speed] ability, which doubled the marching speed of the cavalry under her command, and this helped improve the mobility of the heavy cavalry, which usually had low maneuverability due to their heavy equipment.

”Ane, let’s get some victories soon and earn a reward from Kent.”

Austronesia, riding a large horse clad in armor, galloped up to me. She had been repeating the same thing over and over, looking restless and fidgeting. I’d heard she was a general commanding large armies in Gwain’s forces, but I couldn’t help but question if she was really in charge.

”Austronesia… don’t leave your post without permission. You’ll be sent to the barracks for military misconduct.”

”But Ane, you’re always off scouting.”

Just then, a flare was shot up from the reconnaissance unit I had sent ahead. The red flare was the agreed-upon signal for ‘enemy sighted.’

”Ane! Enemy spotted! I’m sending out my heavy cavalry!”

Like a gust of wind, Austronesia galloped off, leading her heavy cavalry toward the location where the reconnaissance unit had signaled.

”Austronesia! Wait! Charging recklessly will only cause unnecessary casualties!”

I followed Austronesia with my troops, heading toward the location where the flare had gone up.

* * *

”Chi! Why are there so many huge monsters in the South District! No choice, gotta line up and trample ’em!!”

When we reached the place where the advance team signaled, Austronesia was surrounded by a group of Paralyze Spiders and was looking around in a panic.

At a glance, there were about 50 of them, but luckily it seems there haven’t been any deaths yet.

However, I could see some people who had been pierced by the male Paralyze Spiders venomous needles, breaking through their armor and getting hurt.

”Austronesia! Once you break away, regroup and charge! These are your commander’s orders!”

”Got it. I’ll leave the stalling to Ane.”

Austronesia, clearly in a bad mood, quickly gathered her subordinates and tried to break away from the group of Paralyze Spiders.

I gave instructions to the gun cavalry to support her.

”Gun cavalry, dismount and take aim at the Paralyze Spiders to help Austronesia’s team break away. Light cavalry, after the shooting, rush in to disrupt the enemy group. You don’t have to kill. Austronesia should have our backs covered.”

Each team followed my instructions and took their positions.

I timed it with Austronesia’s team’s retreat and sent the signal to start shooting.

 Rat-a-tat-tat.

Bullets poured out in large numbers from the Elitzina carbines deployed with the gun cavalry.

The Paralyze Spiders suddenly under fire stopped chasing Austronesia’s team and turned towards us, running.

The bullets were bouncing off the tough skin of the Paralyze Spiders because of the distance.

”Change bullets, armor-piercing rounds! Load! Fire!”

We subjected the approaching group of Paralyze Spiders to a second round of gunfire.

This time, using the solid-tipped armor-piercing rounds, the bullets pierced the Paralyze Spider’s skin, causing black mist to pour out in large amounts from the wounds, covering the area.

”The enemy is slow now. Light cavalry, move out!”

The light cavalry formed up and charged at a group of paralyzed spiders that had slowed down from gunfire.

The light cavalry dashed forward, plunging their spears into the bodies of the paralyzed spiders, then quickly withdrew.

The paralyzed spiders, speared, let out even more black mist.

”You don’t need to force a kill on the monsters. Focus on hit-and-run tactics. The cavalry’s job is to split the enemy.”

The light cavalry followed my instructions, sticking to hit-and-run, so their casualties were very light.

”Ane, sorry to keep you waiting. I’m going to finish this now. Pull back the light cavalry. If they stand in front of me, even allies won’t get off unharmed.”

Austronesia succeeded in withdrawing and reorganized the heavy cavalry for another charge.

It’s a risky command, but her seasoned subordinates followed her orders because they found her compelling as a commander.

Originally, she told the cavalry officer who was leading the heavy cavalry that they could act independently if her command was bad, but since that officer was following her lead, Austronesia must not have lost her position as commander.

”Austronesia. Do you understand what will happen if you continue on with more violations of military discipline?”

”I understand. I know how to cover up military rule violations. All I need is to achieve overwhelming military success. That’s all. Heavy cavalry, charge. Crush the paralyzed spiders under hoof!”

Austronesia said that and spurred her horse forward, leading the heavy cavalry into a charge against the group of paralyzed spiders.

The Austronesians charge forward with their huge horses and long Cavalry spears, unwavering in their focus.

The Paralyze Spiders that land on the horse bodies are pierced by the spears of other heavy Cavalry and meet their end.

As more and more Paralyze Spiders are pierced by the protruding Cavalry spears, their bodies are skewered one after another, increasing the amount of black mist released, and the surrounding area is enveloped in a thick black fog due to the high concentration of magic elements.

”By the way, they’re classified as A-rank monsters… but seeing them get crushed so easily, I guess the Austronesians’ command ability is really something…”

The group of Paralyze Spiders stand firm to protect the females, with the males taking on the Austronesians’ charge.

”Hmph, they’re pretty tough. Ane, I’ll reorganize the formation, so please provide support again.”
