Volume 4 Chapter 2-2 The Inexperienced Hero and the Foreboding of Turmoil

Gaedaf put down his glass and started talking in a low voice.
”For a young man who’s never held a sword until 6 months ago, his growth is incredible. To have such skill at that age is terrifying… but it’s dangerous.”
I listened to his words and urged him to continue.
”Dangerous, how?”
”He definitely has power, but his mind isn’t keeping up. To put it bluntly, he’s a kid bloated with power. That’s the vibe I get.”
I mulled over Gaedaf’s words.
These people who seem to live like they’re in a game are being celebrated as heroes, treated as something special by everyone.
It’s not hard to imagine how that affects their minds.
Gaedaf continued.
”He swept through the 1st Floor without breaking a sweat, and took down the monsters on the 2nd Floor with ease. He’ll probably keep advancing like this. It’s true he got results in his first dungeon. But I just hope that doesn’t lead to arrogance. Being careless can be deadly.”
There was weight to Gaedaf’s low voice.
It hinted at the countless battles he had survived.
I quietly lifted my glass and took a sip.
Enjoying the rich aroma and smooth taste, I nodded.
”I see.”
Even with my short reply, complicated feelings swirled inside me.
”Honestly, it’s a pain in the ass.”
Gaedaf set his glass down on the counter and let out a light sigh.
The soft light from across the counter lit up his tired profile.
”Taro, with your skills, you could make it further up. Get to Gold Rank soon and switch places with me.”
I couldn’t help but smirk at his words.
It seemed Gaedaf had a decent grasp of my abilities.
My current adventurer rank was still Bronze.
Only the highest-ranked adventurers can take on the dungeon’s 4th Floor.
I’ve already explored that level.
But I haven’t told the guild about it.
I’ve kept my info with Tifi.
If word gets out that I’m tackling the dungeon’s 4th floor, they’ll level me up.
That’s not the issue, but once I rank up, the guild’s gaze will turn harsh, and I’ll end up stuck with hero guides and annoying tasks.
I really don’t want that.
”Actually, I know a high-ranked adventurer, and since he hit Gold Rank, he’s been slammed with a ton of tedious jobs. Seeing him struggle like that really puts me off.”
Shaking my glass, I replied half-jokingly.
”Haha, I guess that makes sense then.”
Gaedaf chuckled deep in his throat.
His low laughter echoed in the upscale tavern, oddly soothing, blending perfectly with the atmosphere.
We kept chatting over drinks, tossing around light banter.
Gaedaf looked a bit resigned while venting his frustrations.
The stories about heroes are unbelievable.
”They’re so spoiled, and they have no respect for someone with experience like me.”
Gaedaf tilted his glass slightly as he spoke.
Fatigue and irritation seeped into his voice.
”They even wanted to take a hot bath in the dungeon. They’re using magic to summon water and heat it up. They’re not thinking about saving any mana!”
”…A hot bath, huh.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly.
It’s not a problem for me, with a Love Hotel around, but I get that for modern Japanese folks, not being able to bathe is just unbearable.
Especially for the girls.
”And then, one of them just went and assaulted a girl he was trying to hit on. And I’m left cleaning up his mess.”
The more I heard, the clearer their inexperience became.
Even if they’re minors, aren’t they lacking common sense?
Is this really the result of being pampered as ‘heroes’?
I lifted my glass and took a sip with a sigh.
The rich aroma spread, but I couldn’t focus on the flavor right now.
”Geez, I’m really suffering here too.”
Gaedaf muttered with a self-deprecating laugh.
”Well, if they’re really the legendary heroes, they’ll soon become stronger than me. Once that happens, I’ll be off the hook. Just gotta hold out until then.”
Gaedaf lightly swirled his drink, a somewhat empty smile on his face.
That look held a feeling not easily grasped, like the resigned spirit of someone who’s been an adventurer for years.
”You think they can really get that strong?”
”Can’t say for sure. But their potential is definitely there.”
Gaedaf gave a short reply and brought his glass to his lips.
I see.
There’s no doubt they have unimaginable power.
But that power doesn’t mean it’ll go in the right direction.
Thinking about that, it’s no wonder my emotions are a mix of hope and anxiety.
We chatted for a while longer, and I paid for the drinks as my share of information.
I was a bit shocked by the price at the fancy tavern, but it wasn’t really a problem.
For the information I got, it felt cheap.
After parting ways with Gaedaf, I walked down the cool night streets, sorting through the info in my head.
The heroes have strength, but they’re mentally immature.
It’s clear from their actions.
The rapid rate of their growth and the issues their actions create.
I wonder how much of an impact those will have on me in the end.
I can’t let my guard down if I want to survive in this world.
