Volume 13 Chapter 9 The Path To Becoming The Monster Hunting King
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
As we went deeper into the forest, a new General Job called [Cargo Transporter] opened up.
Looks like carrying stuff around gave enough action experience to unlock that job.
When [Cargo Transporter] unlocked, [Load Capacity Increase I] and [Cargo Damage Drop Rate Decrease I] also unlocked. I checked out the new job and skills while walking.
[Cargo Transporter]…People who carry loads for work. Job bonus: Stamina Up
[Load Capacity Increase I]…Increases how much you can carry without slowing down if the total weight of goods is up to your strength × 100%. Uses 5 Skill Points, General Skill.
[Cargo Damage Drop Rate Decrease I]…Reduces cargo damage rate by 30% during movement. Uses 5 Skill Points, General Skill.
The [Cargo Transporter] job seems really useful for bringing lots of consumables and loot back, filling the inventory. The more you can carry at once, the more hunting you can do, and it seems to make hunting more efficient.
”Kent, put on your bow next. Over there, you see the Mad Plant cluster. Their poisonous gas makes status affects and can explode if ignited. So, let’s quietly take them down with your bow so we don’t call any freaky stuff over. Plus, it’ll help improve your archery skills too.”
Milly pointed over to a huge cluster of plant-like orchids, but they were way bigger than normal.
Colorful, giant flowers bloomed all over, and the dim forest only around them looked flashy and lively.
”Got it. Lina also gave a strict order, so we’re bringing all our weapons for this hunt.”
I took out the bow and arrows from my inventory and aimed at the Mad Plant 50 meters ahead.
I used to be trained by Manon before I lost my job, but I quickly started using a magic gun, a weapon I hadn’t used before.
But sometimes, other weapons are more effective than a magic gun, so I decided to go for Job acquired.
When I aimed and let go of the string, the arrow shot out with a whistling sound.
But the arrow didn’t reach the Mad Plant, and stuck into the ground instead.
”…Sir Kent… Do your best! If anyone can do it, Sir Kent definitely can!”
Annabella was watching behind me with a worried look.
”Kent! If you miss the next one, you have to do 50 push-ups right there on the spot, you know!”
Milly’s face hardened.
I knew she was stern and acting tough to train me, so strangely, I wasn’t angry.
”Yes! I will aim carefully and hit with perfect certainty!”
I said that and drew the bow again.
I pulled the string even harder than before, putting more strength into it.
My arm trembled and shook, but I aimed and shot the arrow.
The arrow, giving more force than last time, sped toward the target and pierced into a petal.
The Mad Plant, hit by the arrow, yanked its roots out of the ground and started rushing toward us.
”Kent’s got it! When approaching, hold your breath and knock it down in one go. If you breathe in, you’ll get poisoned or paralyzed.”
”Feria will finish it off~”
Feria threw her one-handed axe at the advancing Mad Plant.
The thrown axe seemed to have a will of its own and flew straight for the flower.
”[Double Tomahawk] take this──”
As Feria’s axe sliced through the flower’s petals, a massive cloud of black mist burst out, swirling wildly. The flower, having lost its petals, wobbled and collapsed onto the ground.
Before we knew it, another Maid Warrior lady, who had quietly approached, raised her axe high and prepared for the strike.
”I’ll finish it off! [Root Cutting]!”
Ines’s twin axes glowed as she swung them down in one motion towards the thick stem of the Mad Plant.
With a ‘Thud!’ the stem of the Mad Plant was severed, and a thick black mist poured out from the cut.
”Alright, Kent, bring out the next Mad Plant. Everyone, let’s keep the disassembly line going!”
”Here we go. Next up is that one.”
I aimed at the next Mad Plant and fired an arrow.
──Job Level Up: Hunter LV3 ─> LV4
──Skill point gained: 1 point.
As expected, my job level went up when I hit the target.
Since it seems like my job level will keep rising the more I attack, I nock arrow after arrow, taking aim and firing without pause.
──Job Level Up: Hunter LV4 -──LV5
──Skill point gained: 1 point.
──Job Level Up: Hunter LV5 -──LV6
──Skill point gained: 1 point.
Before I knew it, even though Hunter wasn’t set as my main job, I had surpassed LV20 thanks to the benefits of action experience points.
──Job acquired: [Archer]
──Skill point gained: 1 point
──Job bonus: Dexterity increased
──[Arrow Rain] skill unlocked.
──[Piercing Arrow] skill unlocked.
And so, the higher-tier job [Archer] was unlocked.
I tried out the newly acquired [Piercing Arrow] skill.
The arrows I fired were wrapped in a pale blue light, piercing through 3 Mad Plants at once, causing them to start moving towards us.
Ah, crap.
I overdid it with the piercing.
I quickly pull up the description of [Piercing Arrow].
[Piercing Arrow]… If the physical attack power exceeds the target’s physical defense, it will pierce through 3 enemies, dealing damage. Consumes 10 skill points for Combat Skills.
”Kent! What are you doing! Three of them came at once!”
”Sorry, sorry. Looks like my attack power was too high and I pierced through them.”
Milly’s face turned stern.
Even though they weren’t particularly tough opponents, Milly, who was serious about this hunt, seems to think my actions are unforgivable.
”Lady Miriallia, I will cover for Sir Kent’s blunder. Oh mighty God, Almighty Kent, please look upon us!”
As Annabella was wrapped in a pink aura, she swung her mace to strike at the 3 mad plants charging at her.
The assaulted mad plants sprayed white smoke from their flowers, but Annabella, despite inhaling what should be toxic gas, didn’t falter in her attacks.
One by one, she beat down their flowers, scattering them and weakening them further.
”Oh ho, so Annabella the priestess can finally use [Fanaticism]. With love for Almighty Kent, you won’t suffer from status ailments! Hahaha!”
”[Fanaticism]!?! No, wait, that’s bad. In a different way.”
”I’ve also recently been appointed a [Priest] by Carly, so I’ve acquired [Fanaticism] too.”
Carly and Flamil, who stood beside me, were part of the Church of Kent’s top 3, and while they accepted me being revered as a god, I thought I might have to issue a ban if this [Fanaticism] skill really existed.
”This is really not good. I’ve said before, nothing bothers me more than undervaluing life! To die for the sake of faith is ridiculous!”
Carly looked at me with a puzzled expression as I got angry.
”My lord, [Fanaticism] in the Church of Kent is a skill that raises physical abilities and resistance to status ailments to fulfill the pact of returning alive to our Supreme God, Sir Kent. It does not involve self-destructing at all!”
Hearing from Carly that the [Fanaticism] skill didn’t force death in the name of faith, but rather enhanced combat skills, relieved my worries.
”O-Oh, really…? I thought for sure it was a skill that sacrifices life to attack enemies…”
”Everyone knows that Sir Kent is the most disliked, thanks to Carly’s teachings reaching even the lowest Worshippers. Serving without dying until the very end. This is the ultimate teaching of the Church of Kent.”
Flamil is laughing at me for misunderstanding, “Hehehe.”
In the meantime, the crazed Annabella completed her massacre of 3 Mad Spurt Lands.
When Annabella returned, she lifted her previously hidden face, showing a smile, but her entire armor dripped with a black mist that looked like blood.
”Sir Kent… I’ve slain the monster and returned safely. I offer this victory to you, Sir Kent.”
Annabella knelt and kissed my hand.
”I’m sorry. My mistake made Annabella go through all this trouble.”
”Kent, there are still more Mad Spurt Lands left. Please lure the next one out.”
Before I could even say something comforting to Annabella, Milly ordered me to lure the next one.
This time, I shot an arrow without using skills, and only one of them came charging toward me.
”Next, I want you to chop that one down with your Axe, Kent. You can handle a little status anomaly now. Talia, get ready to heal.”
Milly wants me to engage in close combat.
Doing as I was told, I put away my bow and drew out my 2-handed Axe.
Leaves flew out from the approaching Mad Spurt Land and hit me.
However, the leaves couldn’t pierce the Physical Guard from my armor and bounced back.
”Gotcha!”
My Axe came down hard into the stem of the Mad Spurt Land.
Suddenly, a sharp pain struck my lungs.
Looking around, I saw a white gas spraying from the flowers, and it seemed I had inhaled it without realizing.
”Agh! Agh! Damn it, my chest burns like hell!! You bastard!”
Enduring a searing pain in my lungs like they’re being burned to ash, I swing my Axe down again and again, each strike a wild Mad Plant as I chop away.
But the Mad Plant’s physical attacks can’t penetrate my barrier and are all bounced back, so the only damage I take is from the poison.
”Uguh, ugh! Tell me, Milly! If you give me a night-time reward, I think I can push myself even harder! Will you?”
Clutching my aching lungs, I face the Mad Plant and swing my Axe down over and over, scattering the flowers.
The leftover pain was starting to really bring down my motivation.
”Okay, dear. Tonight, you can have me any way you like. I don’t mind even wearing that bikini armor for you. I got an extra one since it’s such a good inner armor.”
Milly kept a straight face as she offered me the night-time reward.
Milly’s bikini armor!!
No way!
Sweet mode is go!!
”Hell yeah! I’m totally fired up now! Take that, Mad Plant! Die already!”
Fueled by the promise of a night-time reward, I dealt a finishing blow to the Mad Plant.
With a shudder, the Mad Plant quivered and all the flowers scattered, stopping its attack.
”Yahoo! Got the reward!”
Talia ran up to me, all happy, and cast Cure Poison magic on me.
”Sir Kent… It’s fine to be happy, but please be careful. I’ve been so worried… Lady Miriallia has been pushing you to the brink this time. In case something happens… Hyaaaaah!”
Suddenly, Milly stood behind Talia and yanked her tail up.
”Talia, don’t put any silly ideas in Kent’s head! Next time, I’ll make you run across the campsite n*ked.”
Talia trembled at the deadly aura Milly was giving off.
”Y-yes. I won’t say anything more… Please don’t kill me…”
”Good. I’ll take care of the rest.”
Milly said that and then she quickly took care of the rest of that Mad Plant.
It was so fast, it was like… just processing. She punctured the vital spots one by one and killed them all in a flash.
Whoa… instant kill… As expected of Milly, she cleans out poison gas without even breathing it…
I couldn’t hide my surprise at how quickly Milly worked.
”That’s about what Kent can handle too.”
Milly threw off the petals on her armor and yelled at me while she kept the momentum going.
No way… she’s on a whole different level…
