”Yeah, once the Margrave South District can achieve food self-sufficiency, it’ll become the number one country on the Demon Continent. And you know what? I’ll make it happen.”
Feeling more confident thanks to my growing abilities, I made a surprisingly cool statement… and Milly stared at me with a dreamy expression.
”Ahhh… my husband is just so cool. I can’t help but fall for you all over again.”
Just as Milly lunged at me, trying to push me down, Helga, who had come on behalf of my mother-in-law from Abyss Vena, entered the tent.
”Oh!? Were you in the middle of something… If so, I can come back later…”
”No, it’s fine. More importantly, Helga, did you need something?”
”Ah, yes. Blackdagger has decided to contribute funds for the new development project. I’m here to inform you. In discussions with Ms. Annabella, it’s been arranged that the Blackdagger family will contribute 2 thousand large gold coins, in exchange for an annual interest rate of 1%.”
The urgent courier from my mother-in-law had also brought the budget for expanding the new settlement, increasing production at the Lindblum mines, and widening the roads for new towns in the southeast.
However, the Margrave South District’s treasury alone couldn’t cover the cost, so they had been seeking contributions from the Blackdagger family.
Helga’s mission here was to precisely calculate how much the new development costs would be.
As the treasury officer, she had come to consult with Annabella, who had returned to her post as the Treasurer of Blackdagger, about the contribution ratio for the fund.
”1% interest, huh? How’s the treasury holding up? If tax revenue is tight, we can make Blackdagger’s contribution a donation instead. Annabella said that from the last expedition, I personally earned a hundred large gold coins, and if we pool funds from the entire Hunting Group, we should be able to generate over 2 thousand large gold coins in profit.”
When you factor in my share from the Private Hunting Group we mobilized for this large-scale Southern Region hunt, the Blackdagger family has racked up a surplus of over 2 thousand large gold coins.
Considering our previous assets, that amount is more than enough to donate to the kingdom.
But Helga, as the finance minister, didn’t ask the Blackdagger family for a donation.
Instead, she issued national bonds, bought by the family, to fund the development projects.
The Margrave South District Kingdom had been experiencing a massive population boom, so tax revenue was expected to rise, but with the low tax rate policy I introduced, there were concerns that the growth in tax income was slowing down.
In the midst of all that, at least the military expenses were covered by the funds the army earned during this latest expedition. That was a relief.
”Helga, if the national treasury is struggling, you should ask Kent for help. After all, he’s not just the head of the Blackdagger family, but also the king of the Margrave South District Kingdom.”
”I understand, but the treasury is still within a normal range. In fact, the status is quite stable. It’s just that with the rapid expansion of the territory, we predicted a temporary funding shortage, so we injected Blackdagger family funds. Thanks to the Southern Region expedition, cities across the South District, including Abyss Vena, are thriving. Tax revenue from commercial activities is expected to be substantial next year, so we might even be able to advance the repayment deadline.”
Helga flipped through the documents in her hand while answering our questions.
There was a pride in her demeanor that reflected her role as the one entrusted with the national treasury.
”If Helga’s vouching for it, I guess we’re good to go. Got it. Let’s go with the investment amount agreed upon with Annabella.”
”Thank you. As it stands, the Margrave South District Kingdom is the wealthiest in the continent. Once the new developments are underway, it’ll become even richer.”
Helga, holding a stack of documents, intended to push for further policies to enrich the nation. I had no objections to that.
A wealthier nation could afford lower taxes and improved welfare policies. By fostering orphans into skilled individuals and maximizing their abilities, the nation would embrace a meritocracy. Even those with [Black] cards could rise to high positions as specialists, provided they honed their talents.
This system would empower commoners and [Black] cardholders, who had long suffered under colorism and nepotism, while also igniting ambition in those who had previously relied on their card color or lineage.
With such a system, I believed the nation would strive for greater heights through mutual competition. And once that happened, I’d be willing to step down as king, handing the throne to a competent successor, and retire with Milly.
”This expedition seems to have been a success. Ensure the fallen receive adequate compensation and the injured get their benefits.”
”Understood, Your Majesty.”
The southern campaign had its share of casualties, and the state planned to provide condolence payments and injury benefits. Soldiers no longer fit for combat or monster hunting were reassigned to farms or pastures.
Thus, the large-scale monster extermination expedition in the Southern Region concluded successfully, achieving its objectives.
