Volume 4 Chapter 42 The Hero’s Forbidden Technique

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

We had a plan all worked out.

Against the dragon zombie that showed up in the Shadow Forest, and the group of mystery black robes controlling it.

Dragon zombies, corpses of dragons controlled by sorcery.

 Big and clumsy.

 Just decayed bodies, really.

We thought our forces were enough to take them down.

In fact, Lifia and Yomi’s initial attack magic was definitely effective.

But the dragon zombie had an amazing regenerative ability, coming back to life.

Rotting flesh sealed up its wounds in an instant.

And once the dragon recognized us as enemies, it unleashed a scorching breath of fire.

 The firepower was incredible.

If it weren’t for my skill ‘Love Hotel’, we might’ve been in real danger.

Literally, a rotting dragon and all.

Right now, we’re watching the outside through the menu.

The screen shows the dragon zombie.

It hasn’t moved since it unleashed its breath.

The rotted flesh is squirming, blowing out black smoke as it seals the wound.

Must be focusing on repairs, huh?

In the meantime, the black robes are approaching.

 Right where we disappeared.

And then we hear a voice.

 ’Where did they vanish to?’

’It didn’t look like they were cut through by the flames. Right before they disappeared, I saw something like a door…’

’Teleportation? But who in the kingdom can use such a technique?’

The group of black figures discusses.

Trying to figure out our true identity, our power, and how we escaped.

The one Yomi’s magic pierced through the shoulder seems to have already healed.

 Potion or healing magic, maybe?

Suddenly, the wind flaps a robe, revealing a face.

At first glance, it looks almost human.

Skin color, contours, all seem pretty normal.

 But the eyes were different.

Those red, glowing eyes like magic stones are clearly not human.

Could it be that they are indeed of the Demon Race?

That’s when we hear hurried footsteps approaching from behind them.

One of the black robes comes running, out of breath.

’Hey! Why did you let them get away! Those who can take down a dragon zombie are dangerous!’

Roughly stripping off the food, he stands up in a fluster.

A man with black eyes and black hair appeared.

 He looks like a human.

He seems to be in his late teens, around 16 or 17.

’And he’s got info on the Dragon Zombies! They’re sure to regroup and attack en masse next time!’

The Demon Race responded calmly to the emotional human man.

’Your dragon burned everything around. There’s no way to pursue.’

’Or did you see where he ran off to?’

 ’Grr…’

Confronted with a calm rebuttal, the man with black hair was at a loss for words.

 That’s when Yomi murmured.

 ”Huh? This guy…”

 ”What’s wrong?”

 She seemed to notice something.

She stared at the screen, ignoring my question.

 ”I’ve seen this person somewhere…”

That’s when a voice echoed inside the Love Hotel.

 ”I’m back.”

 Tifi had returned.

I had called Tifi to the Love Hotel.

Right in the middle of the stampede.

She should be busy with the Adventurers’ Guild work, but I needed her wisdom.

”Ah, welcome back. Sorry, I know you’re busy over there.”

”No, it’s fine. Thanks to Lif-Lif’s magic, the number of monsters flowing here seems to have decreased. The adventurers’ morale has also gone up.”

Lifia’s magic was visible even outside the forest, it seemed.

Magic that could affect a part of the forest.

 Of course.

If the adventurers were encouraged, it was an unexpected side effect.

I explained the situation to Tifi.

”A Dragon Zombie and a group of humanoids, huh?”

Tifi thought for a moment before answering.

”First, that dragon must be under someone’s control. Otherwise, it wouldn’t target a populated area. I think there’s a necromancer in the black robes.”

There were originally 8 black robes.

We took down two of them.

It must be one of the remaining 6.

”This black-haired human was giving orders to the dragon.”

Lifia pointed at the character displayed on the menu as she answered.

 It must be him.

The man with black eyes and black hair.

”Then, there’s no mistake about this human. Undead won’t take orders from anyone but the necromancer controlling them.”

”If we take that guy down, will the Dragon Zombie stop too?”

”Once it’s free, it’ll start going after anything it can──people, animals, whatever. And its insane regeneration speed will be gone. That’s part of a necromancer’s abilities, after all. Undead regeneration is one of them.”

If it stops regenerating, then there’s no problem.

We’ve got enough firepower to take it down.

First, we take out the human man who looks like the necromancer.

Then we’ll go after the Dragon Zombie.

But there’s a chance those black-robed assholes could slip away in the meantime.

I don’t want to let those guys get away.

It’s not just because they’re the ringleaders of the stampede, you know.

 They’ve seen my skills.

When I summoned the door, they were blocked by the blazing flames.

But still, they could probably guess a few things.

They already know about the door and my teleportation-type abilities.

I need to keep my skills hidden as much as possible.

My ‘Love Hotel’ skill is powerful, but it has plenty of weaknesses.

I can’t let them take any information back with them.

So, I want to take out every last one of them.

”But using a dragon of that size and regenerating it in seconds… That necromancer’s got some serious skill.”

”Must be a pretty rare ability, huh?”

”Necromancers are already rare. In human kingdoms, they’re forbidden magic, even by royal standards.”

So a highly skilled necromancer teaming up with what could be a Demon Race… that’s a big deal.

 We don’t know why, though.

Probably some dumb reason, but still.

”So, you think they’re definitely Demon Race?”

”Well… I’m not totally sure, but… from their appearance, they match the Demon Race traits I’ve heard of.”

And considering Lifia’s description of them as something between monsters and humans, it seems pretty clear they’re Demon Race.

”But are they really humanity’s enemies?”

When we were summoned as heroes, the princess at the castle told us they were humanity’s greatest threat, the enemy.

 The Demon Race──our sworn enemies.

 ”Hmm… I’m not sure.”

 Tifi gives a hesitant response.

”It’s true that in the past, there have been power struggles and wars. But isn’t it a bit of an exaggeration to say they’re all enemies of humanity? I’ve heard there are countries that are friendly with the Demon Race.”

 ”I see.”

I knew it. Can’t trust a word those royal bastards say.

 However──

”Not all of the Demon Race are enemies of humanity. But at least those bastards… they’re our enemies.”

 No doubt about it.

Honestly, I couldn’t care less about the war between the kingdom and the Demon Race.

Whoever wins, it doesn’t matter to me.

But if it puts Saoriba’s town, Tifi’s hometown, in danger… that’s a different story.

 I won’t show mercy.
