Volume 14 Chapter 23 The Siege And Annihilation Operation On The Fait River (Part I)

Thud! I slam my favorite greatsword into the ground, and the guys who were in the war meeting start buzzing with excitement.
”Just like Nokin said! With my sure-win strategy, Nokin’s bravery, and the soldiers of the Eastern Garuda Principality, those ‘another world monsters’ ain’t nothing to fear!”
Officer after officer jumps up, echoing Alonsa’s speech with chants of ‘Long live King Nokin! Long live Chancellor Alonsa! Long live the Eastern Garuda Principality!’ Fueled by this boost in morale, we kick off a part of our counteroffensive: the ‘Feto River Encirclement Annihilation Operation.’

The next day, once all the troops finish their deployment, I lead Geronimo and 4 thousand handpicked Elite Troops towards Felward Fortress. We charge right into the group of ‘another world monsters.’ The Black Dragon Dukedom’s separate operation, the ‘Felward Aerial Operation,’ seems to be underway too, ’cause those pesky flying ‘another world monsters’ are mostly keeping out of sight. We take advantage of that and strike the monsters’ sides as they march on Felward.
The ‘another world monsters’ up front are too slow to notice us closing in. They’re thrown into chaos and don’t even get a chance to show off their fancy combat moves. One after another, they’re cut down and bleed out, coming to a halt.
”Cut down anyone who gets in the way! Push deeper! We’re reeling in a big catch!!!”
I slice a crocodile-like ‘another world monster’ clean in half with my greatsword and get ready to unleash the Great Wave.
”Everyone, Sir Nokin’s about to unleash the Great Wave! Make sure to dodge it properly!!”
Thanks to Geronimo’s loud warning, the soldiers fighting with us clear out of the line of fire.
”Nghhhh!!”
He used all his fighting spirit and strength to swing his greatsword at sonic speed. When the blade tip turned red-hot, a wind-covered air blade shot out. It sliced through the ‘another world monsters’ along the line of fire, like cutting grass.
”Nice job!! As expected of Ode’s master!”
Geronimo swung his big hammer, smashing some ‘another world monsters,’ then moved on to find the next prey.
Before long, the monster group seemed to notice us breaking through their side, tearing into their flank. They stopped going toward Felward and started to gather around us instead.
”Alright! Got ’em, boys! Now we slowly fall back to the marshlands! Anyone injured, get out in front! Sorry about leaving the dead behind──can’t save everyone. If you don’t want to die, fight those monsters with everything you’ve got and survive! I believe our warriors can do it!!”
”Fall back! Fall all the way to the marshlands!!”
Geronimo loudly ordered the retreat. The soldiers fighting the monsters started retreating steadily, pulling enemy attention away. Already, dozens of soldiers visible in the fight had been killed. Their orderly retreat to lure the enemy will probably cause even more deaths.
”Everyone, don’t die! Survive, so we can tell our story in the future.”
Managing to cut down the approaching ‘another world monsters,’ I took charge of the soldiers and led them safely back while defending the rear.
Thanks to Geronimo and the soldiers’ efforts, the retreat to the marshlands was less costly than expected. The group of monsters we drew in included about half of those around Felward fort──roughly 30 thousand small-sized, ten thousand medium-sized, and several hundred large monsters.
The main plan is to trap the big group of “another world monsters” in a swampy lowland. Alonsa made this place to handle them efficiently. The idea is to lure the enemies into the middle of the swamp. Then, each of us will break apart and run to the high mountains on both sides to set up our defenses.
When the enemies are drawn into the swamp’s center, I give the command──like firing a spear-shaft arrow──to my troops.
Hoo-ooooo!
The soldiers hear the signal──the crack of the arrow-shafts shot into the sky. They quickly shed their armor, becoming lighter, and dash across the difficult swamp terrain toward their side defenses. Up on the mountain, they drop big trees and rocks at the narrow mountain pass, blocking the way for any enemies coming up from behind.
”Now, you’re completely on your own. You’re done for.”
As a “another world monster” tries to attack a fellow soldier, Garo sinks his greatsword into it from behind. He turns and runs toward the mountain fortress where Garo is waiting, heading for the high ground.
