Volume 3 Chapter 110 The Sadistic Monks
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The Barghest had drawn countless portraits of Serena(?).
He pasted them on the walls of his secret basement, enjoying them all to himself.
In other words…
”Is this… could it be my mother?”
”Is that so? It’s the first time I’ve heard you mention your mother.”
”Right, I didn’t say anything.”
”──Surely, the Wolfmen practiced polygamy, right?”
When Kian inquired, Serena nodded “yes.”
”This picture is probably of the mother who gave birth to me. Her name was Colinna.”
”Your mother, which one?”
”I don’t know. ────Kian, you didn’t kill her, did you?”
”I didn’t kill any women. Sarah probably wants to ask where Ms. Colinna was before you left the pack.”
”Huh? I don’t know. Back then, my oldest brother was killed by Azrael’s Death Sword User.”
”Huh?”
Sarah stiffened.
It was more than just a casual reaction.
As Kian and Serena stared at her, Sarah hesitated before confessing.
”I was… ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’.”
”No way… right?”
”It’s true. But I don’t have any memories of killing your brother──or any Wolfmen. So don’t make that face.”
”Y-You’re sure?”
”──Sarah, were you really the Death Sword User?”
Kian asked in astonishment, and Sarah nodded.
”That’s what I’ve been saying.”
”For real? Then you really were at the pinnacle of the warrior monks.”
”Well, yeah. It’s not something to brag about, though.”
Not something to brag about…
Kian felt his blood boil at those words.
The pinnacle of a warrior monk’s success, not something to brag about?
How absurd.
He never wanted to hear such a joke.
Kian had always been determined to become an excellent warrior monk, even when he was a dropout, even when he was rotting in East End.
The thought of it being trivial made him feel a surge of murderous intent, even towards Sarah.
(Sarah had more talent than I did.)
Kian forced a smile, but inside he felt an intense jealousy toward his childhood friend’s strength.
(People with talent will never understand how I feel…!)
”Kian?”
”It’s nothing.”
”Really? ──Ms. Serena, sorry for interrupting.”
”Hmm… The last time I saw my mother was at the feast for my brother’s death. The feast lasted for about a week, but I don’t remember exactly when during that week. I was either playing with the younger ones or cooking.”
”Wasn’t your Mother in the kitchen?”
When Sarah asked, Serena’s face became serious.
”I’m not sure… maybe she was, maybe she wasn’t. My memory’s foggy.”
”──Well, you wouldn’t usually worry about whether your mother’s around, right?”
”No way, Kian.”
”No? Well, I don’t even have a clear memory of having a proper conversation with my father.”
”――――.””――――.”
Sarah and Serena exchanged awkward looks, tuning out Kian’s words with uncomfortable expressions.
(I was just speaking the truth…)
’Kian, live strong.’
(Ah, I see now… it was a pitying statement. I’ll be more careful next time.)
”Anyway, I think Barghest liked Ms. Colinna. But then, the powerful leader Glen swooped in and took her. Maybe that’s why Barghest hated Glen.”
”No way. Barghest was a really good person. He cared so much for my father.”
”But that Barghest, he is the one with the shaved sides of his head and long hair tied back, right? He had a tattoo of fangs on his temples and a plant-like tattoo on his neck, right?”
”Yeah, that’s Barghest.”
(So it was Barghest, after all.)
In that case, Serena’s perception was completely off.
Well, considering the episode where she was left behind by the group without realizing it, he already knew she didn’t have the ability to sense people or situations well.
Her sharp senses and confidence in detecting lies from heartbeats or subtle cues were probably her downfall.
Lies are easy to detect, but controlling silence and truth can also fool people easily.
”I wonder if Barghest killed Glen because of a love quarrel”
”Huh?!”
”Oh, sorry, that was a bad thing to say, Ms. Serena.”
”──Sarah has always loved those messy love stories, right?”
”Hey, don’t say I’m just some delusional girl into crazy romance, Kian!”
”Sorry, sorry. Have you found out anything else in the basement?”
”No. I didn’t have much time, and I couldn’t investigate everything. I was pissed, so I wrote ‘You’re a terrible artist’ in big red letters on the biggest portrait.”
”Wow…”
Now he remember, as a kid Sarah painted ‘idiot’ with paint on the wall of the house of someone who bullied Kian, and her father chewed her out harshly.
Also, next she snuck into her father’s study to graffiti ‘bald!’, which Kian did.
That’s a bad memory.
In the end, Kian was caught by a servant and dragged out.
As Kian stared into the distance, Ninini suddenly shouted loudly.
”There’s someone-nya! Run-nya!”
”────””Oh, you let your guard down, huh””────!?”
He was about to suspect Sarah might just be a spoiled brat kid, but after 15 years as an adventurer, switching to quick thinking is easy.
Leaving Serena behind in shock, Kian and Sarah immediately kicked off the ground.
Without needing glasses, the vampire’s sight caught 2 shadows darting through the forest trees.
They’re pretty fast, but not impossible to catch.
Kian leapt through the bushes, knocking them down as he quickly closed the distance behind both.
The two just happened to be stopping.
In front of them──the other side of the trees──Sarah, having teleported slightly ahead, slowly stepped out drawing her mithril saber.
”C-curse it… ugh”
”I-I’m caught between them”
Kian pushes through the bushes, spotting a pair of men and women right ahead.
They were very young Wolfmen.
”Sarah, who are these?”
Kian tears through the bushes with his muscular arms, tossing them aside carelessly.
Sarah swiftly swings her Mithril sword, cutting through all the bothersome twigs in a single leap.
”Well, who could they be? Judging by how they came from the forest, they don’t seem to be from the camp we passed earlier…”
”Ugh…” “wh-what should we do…”
”Hands behind your head. If you run, I’ll kill you. If you use magic, I’ll kill you.”
”If you raise your voice unnecessarily, I’ll kill you. Answer my questions clearly.”
Though it wasn’t his usual style, Kian spoke to them in a forceful tone.
After a moment of hesitation, the two made up their minds and lunged at Sarah.
