Volume 3 Chapter 112 Yelmar’s Proposal II
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It’s more like circumstantial or indirect evidence, but it seems like Glen is assumed to be at the ancient temple.
It’s the same with Vestacia.
The story is that there’s too much food being moved out, but if Glen’s family is also at the ancient temple, they’d need a lot of supplies on the cart. Every 3 days supply runs make sense then.
”Ms. Vestacia wasn’t in the ‘Storm Herd’ campsite, huh? Unless there was some extra setup in the Barghest research tent, but that’s not certain.”
”Are you saying there’s a secret room behind a secret room?”
”Yes. Double traps. That creepy room might be a camouflage to hide the very last room where they’re holding someone.”
”Wait, did you guys go into the Barghest’s laboratory?”
”Okina did.”
”Yeah. It was a creepy space filled with portraits that looked like Serena’s mother. Walls plastered with suspicious pictures.”
When Sarah explained this, Yelmar and the others looked at each other, surprised.
”Well, it seems Colinna was once engaged to a Barghest.”
”Huh… really? First I hear of this.”
”What? Serena, you haven’t heard that from your mom (Colinna)?”
”Uh, yeah.”
”Of course she wouldn’t tell her.”
Sarah sighed.
”I could never tell my daughter: ‘Mom, I was actually going to marry him. But some reason, I married the leader instead’.”
”If it were me, I’d say it!”
”You’re so insensitive.”
Sarah gave a tired look, and Yelmar laughed loudly, as if barking.
”People say that a lot! Hahaha!”
”It’s like me and Sarah… No, forget it. Sorry.”
After saying that, he started to get weirdly downcast, imagining strange things.
Sarah looked at him with a “Oh, I messed up” face, but he shouldn’t worry so much. For Kian, being abandoned by Sarah was really something he no longer cared about.
”Huh? Huh? So, before my mother married my father, she was engaged to the Barghest… and then she married my father?”
”That’s right. While the Barghest was studying magic in the Royal Capital, the boss stole Colinna away.”
”──────, ……”
The Barghest is around 40 now, and he was studying magic in the Royal Capital for 3 years starting at 20. Considering Serena’s age, it means Glen assaulted a girl with a fiancé to make a false claim.
What kind of man is he?
A brute… an almost evil act.
’Don’t talk like that.’
(He’s being a bit harsh on me, isn’t he? Well, I guess I can’t blame him…)
”We’re getting sidetracked.”
Sarah looked around at everyone and said loudly, deliberately exaggerated.
Then she shot icy glances at Yelmar’s subordinates, who looked at her with sleazy eyes, and continued in a businesslike tone.
”Yelmar, I think your story doesn’t fully prove that Ms. Vestacia is trapped in the ancient temple. But, since Vestacia wasn’t seen at the ‘Storm Herd’ camp, there’s a possibility she is still held in the ancient temple.”
”Ms. Vestacia is a rare high elf. If Barghest is conducting some suspicious experiments, it’s not unreasonable to think he moved her to the ancient temple, which is the experimental site.”
If only Barghest can use the teleportation gate, he can carry out inhumane experiments without the members of ‘Storm Herd’ realizing it.
”I think it’s worth checking. Ms. Serena, what do you think?”
”Um… Sorry, I’m a bit confused…”
”In short, there’s a possibility that Ms. Vestacia is trapped in the ancient temple.”
”If there’s a chance, I think we should go check it out.”
”Okay, it’s decided then.”
”──At least thanks to me, it looks like hope is within reach, huh?”
Yelmar nodded at Kian’s words.
”Yeah. I appreciate it.”
Without his information, we would’ve had to extract the names of the Wolfmen who attacked the half-dead Rean and capture and interrogate the culprits based on their portraits.
Once the attack was disrupted, it became an absurdly difficult task; Kian might’ve even killed them all.
That saved us some trouble.
Let’s search for an ancient temple at the base of the Dacia Mountains…
At least, since the Barghests frequent the area, there’s a high chance of finding new leads there.
”Anything else you wanna ask me?”
”I’d like you to tell me in detail about ‘Storm Herd’ heading towards Nordende.”
”About 3 months ago, Glen’s eldest son, Ozeas, was murdered. His limbs were severed; it was a brutal death. We were planning to find the ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’ who was suspected and give them the same treatment. But during Ozeas’ funeral, Glen suddenly declared he was heading north. He mentioned something about the Bloodsucking Kind rampaging up there. Never heard of such a thing, but anyway, Glen arbitrarily changed course and led the herd north.”
Yelmar’s mouth twisted into a ‘へ’ shape.
”I lost faith in the boss. Ozeas was killed, and that’s just not right. Everyone around was fed up with Glen acting on a whim. But Glen is a hero, a great warrior worthy of respect. ‘Storm Herd’ decided to head north to deal with the Bloodsucking Kind, even though we had doubts about Glen’s judgment. It wasn’t for free.”
”Is that when you defected?”
”Yeah. I took my mates and disappeared from the funeral site.”
”Glen Silverwooloo’s judgment doesn’t seem very reasonable to me, but did he really have the ability to make proper decisions?”
Yelmar nodded in response to Sarah’s question.
”I talked to the boss before leaving the group, and he was reasonable. It wasn’t the first time the boss fought for others without caring about the budget, and I just thought that was typical of Glen Silverwooloo. ──But”
Yelmar lowered his eyes, lost in thought.
”At that time, it wasn’t known that the Bloodsucking Kind was rampaging in the North. I wondered if my secret side business had been exposed. Later, I feared I might be called out and killed by the boss. But, actually, the boss wasn’t aware of my business, and the real reason was that a huge swarm of Bloodsucking Kind had started terrorizing the North. ──How did the boss know that large numbers of Bloodsucking Kind were appearing there?Maybe he used tea leaf fortune-telling like Natasha?”
”Tea leaf fortune-telling has about a 20% accuracy rate. And the info gained is very fragmentary. Relying on just that 20% to move the herd would be unreasonable. If you say that’s typical of Glen Silverwooloo, I have no argument.”
”Who was Ozeas, the one who was killed?”
When Kian asked, Yelmar answered without hesitation.
”He was an excellent warrior. Brave, thoughtful, loyal to comrades. Sharp instincts, able to see the big picture. If he hadn’t died, the ‘Storm Herd’ would have remained stable. The mobilization of monster soldiers at Azrael, the formation of the national defense army in Franz Kingdom’s center, and the era of mercenaries reaching its peak are ending. Ozeas foresaw a bleak future for the financially troubled and collapsing ‘Storm Herd.’ ──I decided to follow his example and start a business outside of warfare.”
”Did Ozeas have some kind of business?”
”Looks like it. The boss often praised Ozeas for turning a profit. But no one knows what exactly Ozeas was doing. Well, knowing him, it was probably something legit. Unlike me, an outcast── he was like an embodiment of light.”
”I see, thanks.”
”Do you have any more questions?”
”Who is looking for me now? Do I have to go to meet them?”
”No, they said they will come to see you. You just need to listen quietly to their talk in front of my client, and don’t draw your sword.”
”Do you know when they’ll arrive?”
When asked, Yelmar rubbed his chin and said, “Well…”
”My allies are out to meet them now. If they didn’t get attacked or die along the way, they should be here in about a week.”
”Thanks. That’s all I wanted to ask.”
”If you think of anything else later, call us using the business card.”
”It’s better not to use that business card.”
”Sarah cuts in.”
”Huh? Why not?”
”That is a fake ‘Storm Herd’ business card, isn’t it? Using it might alert their mages, and you can also send small curses through it. If the blood is still on the magic circle on the card, beware.”
”What?!”
Yelmar’s subordinates behind him turn pale and take out their cards.
Sarah shrugs.
”Maybe it’s better to ask a magician you trust to make a new one.”
”Can you make one for us?”
Yelmar questions while his subordinates crush and bury the cards on the ground.
”Eh, me?!?”
”You don’t know how to make one?”
”I do, but there are no tools here. Plus, I’ve got so many things to do now that I can’t spend time making a card.”
”Then wait. I have a gut feeling, but you’re a pretty skilled magician, right? You could probably make a much better one than a regular magician. You can do it after you return to your base──East End. Make it, and I’ll pay you whatever we agree on. How about that?”
”I can’t decide now. I am part of Lord Kian’s team.”
”I’ll wait until you’re back at East End.”
Kian answers Sarah, who looks troubled.
Yelmar is a wary opponent but pays well.
The previous time, he paid Kian 23 gold coins in one go.
For Sarah, who needs money to rebuild the Nakash family, she’s an important first customer.
Flipping her down now would be a hasty mistake.
”If you make a request through the East End Adventurer Guild, I’ll get the message.”
”Then do that. Now I just hope you all return safely to East End.”
”Ms. Natasha, isn’t she off-limits?”
Kian frowns, but Yelmar just says, “It’s our business. Don’t interfere.”
’They probably think it’s a joke to have that head magician create a communication network for the pack.’
(I see. Of course, it makes sense, but Yelmar doesn’t trust Natasha either.)
Wolfmen’s sharp senses pick up more about who they’re facing than humans, so maybe they’ve already figured out how talented and trustworthy Sarah is in this short time.
She also naturally has some trait that makes humans trust her.
”Hey, it’s about time…”
Just as the conversation was going well, the Mag girl, taken as a hostage, let out a muffled cry.
She looked pale, almost like she was about to vomit.
”Can I get some deworming medicine soon? I’m at my limit physically and mentally.”
”Oh, I forgot. Sorry.”
”That damn old hag…”
”Auntie, right?”
Seeing Sarah smile warmly behind her mask, Yelmar’s subordinates shivered all at once, sensing something.
