Volume 14 Chapter 36 The Creeping Nightmare

*Iska’s perspective
”Hah, hah, the enemies just keep coming. Even giants, ‘another world monsters,’ are showing up now.”
We had spent days crossing the plains from Felward Fortress, climbing over hills, and hunting down every ‘another world monster’ along the way, all the way to the ‘another world gate’ (Abyss Gate), the source of their appearance.
And now, at the ‘another world gate’ (Abyss Gate), the production line of ‘another world monsters’ is being thoroughly destroyed by the Crimson Bride. From the sky, the Black Dragon Clan is reducing the enemies with a full-scale aerial bombardment, but many Black Dragon Clan members have fallen to the ground due to the Concentration fire from the snail-like ‘another world monsters’ launching magic missiles.
From the even larger expanded ‘another world gate’ (Abyss Gate), several giant ‘another world monsters,’ each about 5 meters tall, appeared, carrying what looked like guns.
”Tch, everyone, watch out! Big ones with long weapons are coming out!”
Rosalinda warned everyone around about the ominous aura the giants were giving off. I’m trying to hold back the giants’ movements by flying my wings, but my body is screaming from exhaustion after the long battles and from the overwhelming mana I’ve absorbed.
This… I might be reaching my limit soon… I just want to get Kent to the ‘another world gate’ before it’s too late.
I had already lost most of my human form. My wings, now with their own will, were attacking the enemies with magic, my legs had transformed into 4 like a horse and were running like the wind, my arms now had vents releasing Burning Flame and shooting magic bullets, and my hair was constantly charged, ready to release a high-voltage shock at any time. I had become a chimera.
I might not be able to turn back now… But if I don’t win this fight, I can’t live with Kent, or with everyone else… It can’t be helped. If I can endure this, and everyone can be happy, that’s good enough for me.
”Rosalinda! Heta, take a break and get your wounds treated. I’ll take down that big thing all at once.”
During the advance, some members were injured and had to retreat. Among them, Renge, who fought at the front with me, was caught in the enemy’s suicide attack and severely wounded. Letting her fall back was a mistake. With Renge gone, my back is covered by Rosalinda and Heta, but the enemy numbers won’t decrease, and the fatigue is starting to show.
Rosalinda hesitated for a moment, but looking at the condition of the other members, she seemed to decide to stay.
”Iska! I’m counting on you for just a bit. Once you’re resupplied, come right back! And don’t overdo it, okay?”
”Ah, yeah, yeah. I get it, okay?”
”Iska, leave some enemies for Sir Heta. We need to earn enough to pay for Renge’s treatment!”
With a blood-stained face, Heta speaks with false bravery. His body should be beyond its limit, but he’s been fighting with hatred for the ‘another world monster’ that hurt Renge.
”Alright, alright. I’ll leave some for Heta, so hurry back and get treated.”
Shooing the dogs away, everyone else retreats towards the main unit where Kent is. I’m left behind, looking around.
Come to think of it, a lot of the Monster Hunters died too…
The Monster Hunters who fought with us also had many deaths and desertions to reach this point. The King’s Sword, fighting alongside us, also had many members injured and fallen, desperately trying to wipe out the ‘another world monster’.
”But you guys, we won’t let ‘another world monster’ roam freely in our world!”
I steel myself and charges at the 5 “another world monsters.”
The giants see me and aim their gun-like weapons at me.
FOOOM, BABABABABA.
The guns spin, and a barrage of shots rains down on me at impossible speeds. Quickly, I change my whole body to a steel-hard, true-silver skin.
”Phew, close one. Those are Kent’s weapons, right? Why are they using them?”
Without time to think, the giants keep firing at me. Even with the silver skin, getting hit still hurts like a blunt weapon, so I can’t take too many hits.
I run on all 4s, slip under the giants, and unleash a flamethrower and magic blasts all around, then order my wings to attack them.
The giants, attacked by the wings, desperately try to shoot them down, but end up hitting their own, causing more chaos.
I dart around their feet, tearing the giants’ knee ligaments with my claws. The giants, unable to support their weight, fall to the ground and stop moving.
”Got one.”
I focus on the giant on its knees, concentrating magic at my mouth. Then, I change the condensed magic into a thin beam and fire it.
The beam pierces the giant’s head, exploding it like a watermelon dropped on the ground. Meanwhile, the wings, having used all their magic, return to my back.
”Guh…”
A massive amount of magic is drained from my body, causing a pain like my insides are being scraped with an iron spike. I immediately take out and drink recovery and mana potions from my pouch.
Hold on… just a little longer, if you could just…
The pain eases slightly thanks to the recovery, but I still feel nauseating pain throughout my body. My senses are numbing due to the large intake of mana and the massive mana consumption.
”I can’t lose to something like this! I’m going to live with everyone!”
Another giant was targeting us, so I rushed forward, releasing the wings filled with magic power to attack again. At the same time, I fired flame jets and magic bullets, turning the giant’s body into flames and holes, killing it.
The remaining 3 were swatting away the wing attacks while firing at me.
”Such annoying pests. Just go back to your world already!”
I used the giant as a shield and made them kill each other. I climbed its back, firing magic bullets into its head to blow it off. The giant, now headless, kept pulling the trigger of its gun as it slowly collapsed to the ground.
THROB.
Again, a searing pain shot through my body, so intense I could barely breathe. The pain was so bad, my vision started to blur.
No, I can’t… not yet… just a little longer… please… just a little more… then, I don’t care if I die… Please… keep moving.
My body felt heavy like lead, and I couldn’t move it the way I wanted. The last giant, leaking bodily fluids, aimed its gun at me. The moment its finger tightened on the trigger, the gun exploded, and its arm was blown off.
”YAHOO! Sir Heta’s here! I borrowed some weapons from the Black Bullet folks. Hang on, I’m gonna take care of them!”
Heta, who should’ve been resupplying in the back, appeared from behind the ‘another world monster’ factory, with members of Rootless Weed (Deracine) showing up to support, guns in hand.
”Iska! Sorry to keep you waiting. I found a Black Bullet ammunition truck just a little further back. I swiped some weapons and ammo. I left an IOU, but I’m sure Kerstin will be pissed, so I’ll make sure we get some results. Thanks for holding out. Now it’s our turn. You rest here, okay?”
Rosalinda handed me a high-level healing potion, then grabbed her shoulder-mounted weapon, aimed her magic gun, and rushed off to finish off the last giant.
”Rosalinda… sorry. I’ll rest for a bit.”
I felt relief that everyone came, and I drank the contents of the bottle handed to me. The pain in my body eased a little.
