”Understood. Then I’ll be off. Send your familiar to me once you’ve figured out the summoning method.”

”I always have a bat with you. I’ll send word immediately. Apologies if it bothers you.”

”Whatever. Do as you please, even if it’s surveillance.”

Rean said this with a tone of complete indifference.

”Make sure to explain things properly to Ms. Sarah later, so she doesn’t scold me.”

”Why don’t you tell her yourself? All you have to say is, ‘I’m going hunting.’”

”I don’t like talking to her. That woman treat me like we’re not even human. It’s unpleasant to speak with her. How can you stand being around someone like that?”

”Watch your words. If you speak ill of her, I’ll have to punch you, even if you’re my friend. You’re Friedrich’s merchandise, so I’d like to keep you intact.”

 ”My apologies.”

Rean’s tone made it unclear if he was genuinely apologizing. He then disappeared into the corridor, weaving through the warriors cleaning up after dinner.

In his place, Sven, the leader of the Wolfmen warriors, arrived.

”About the letter I sent to Yelmar two days ago, I’ve received a reply.”

 ”Oh? What did Yelmar say?”

”No, not Yelmar, but our client replied. They’re thrilled we discovered the gate opened by the Black Onyx spirit. They’re tripling our reward.”

”Triple? That’s incredible. Though I don’t know the original amount.”

”Our client is filthy rich. Oh, but I can’t reveal client information.”

”Anyone hiring mercenaries is rich. That’s not exactly a secret.”

 ”Heh, not just rich—filthy rich!”

”Right… So, is that all you wanted to say?”

When Kian asked nonchalantly, Sven spread his arms wide and declared, “Prepare to be amazed!”

”Our client is bribing the Beastmen Alliance. Their discussions will stall, and the investigation team’s dispatch will be significantly delayed.”

”…You sent the letter two days ago, right? So your client anticipated this situation and bribed the Hairkin Races’ tribal council?”

Showing the crystal footage to the council would naturally lead to an investigation team being sent. Anticipating and acting on this was no small feat.

Yelmar and Sven’s client must be highly competent. That’s why they remain wealthy in such chaotic times.

”We can’t be sure the council’s decision will actually be delayed, but it’s good news regardless. I’ll inform Sarah and Rean later.”

 ”Yeah, make sure you do!”

”I’ll join the night guard duty too. With warriors busy questioning in the plaza, we’re short-handed.”

”Appreciate it. Take position on that rooftop over there later.”

Kian nodded, and Sven left with a “Leave it to me.” Kian watched him rejoin his comrades before starting to clear the pots.

Kian was in charge of today’s meal for their group.

He also had to wash the dishes.

Ninini had taken Sarah and Serena’s plates, so he’d have to wash those too once the lazy cat brought them back.

”They finish eating and just leave it all behind.”

Kian glanced gloomily at Rean’s plate, abandoned in the corner of the courtyard, surrounded by dry weeds. The spoon and fork were missing—where had he thrown them? Those utensils were Kian’s proud creations.

(Rean hasn’t changed a bit since childhood. Lyritisse spoiled him too much.)

But now Lyritisse is in a vegetative state, cared for by Priscilla, with no signs of recovery.

What will become of ‘Lion’s Companion’ now?

 Vestacia might remain petrified.

Ninini will likely leave without hesitation.

Rean will probably continue hunting alone.

 That’s just who he is.

 ’Kian.’

 ”What is it?”

Picking up the wooden spoon and fork from the dry weeds and placing them on the plate, Kian asked by glasses.

The glasses’ voice was tense, contrasting with the relaxed post-meal atmosphere.

 ’Something is approaching us.’

 ”What do you mean?”

’From the mountains. It’s coming at great speed. I can’t tell how many—their presence is too faint to read.’

 (What are you—)

Before Kian could finish his question, a scream of agony came from the opposite side of the courtyard.

 ”———!”

 Kian turned in shock.

The Wolfmen warriors, who had been relaxing, noticed the scream and looked in the same direction as Kian.

 ”———”

 A black shadow—

The dark, lightweight attire worn by Azrael’s warrior monks during nighttime missions.

The shadow wore a demon mask from the Eastern lands and held a curved shamshir sword reversed, having just pierced a Wolfman’s skull. It slowly rose from the fallen warrior’s back.

 ”———”

 ”———”

 ”Huh…?”

 ”Matt… Matt’s…”

 ”Matt’s been hit!”

 ”Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”

Sven drew his falchion and loudly warned his comrades. Kian and everyone else drew their swords.

Around the shadow-like warrior monk, more figures in identical black attire and demon masks landed. They stepped beside the first monk, silently drawing their black shamshirs.

 ”Aghhhh!”

 ”———!”

From the corridor—the ancient temple’s only exit—one of Sven’s most skilled warriors was thrown into the center of the courtyard.

 ”———”

 Another demon mask—

But this one was a woman.

She wore distinctive light armor: a white robe over black body armor, with a short black skirt exposing her long, white legs. Her boots reached her ankles.

The robe’s design left her shoulders and elbows exposed. She wore thin black gloves.

In her gloves, she held a still-beating heart—from the man she had just killed.

The woman warrior monk crushed the heart, flicking her arm to splatter blood on the ground. Her black eyes, visible through the mask, held a calm yet deadly intent.

Shouts erupted. A nearby warrior pointed his sword at her.

The woman monk shook her long, glossy black hair, lowered her stance, and prepared to face the charging silver wolves head-on.
