Volume 13 Chapter 259 Bernard, Mission Aqua Impossible

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I had joined the Holy Aqua Religion, and now I was assigned to a special ops unit of men—mostly men—tasked with missions so covert, they didn’t even have an official name.

”Welcome to Impossible Aqua Force. I am Captain Ethan of the IAF,” a voice rang out, smooth yet commanding.

A striking woman, draped in an elaborate dress, greeted me. Wait… Ethan? I blinked. There was something odd about this person. A slight bulge in the throat… Was this… a man?

”I’m Bernard Aylward. What exactly is this unit’s purpose?”

”Aylward-kun, a good question. Follow me.”

Ethan pulled a book from the shelf. The bookshelf split down the middle, revealing a thick steel door. I stood, gaping, as Ethan placed his hand on a scanner beside the door.

’Agent Ethan’s identification confirmed. Please proceed.’

The door opened, revealing a small, sterile room. Ethan stepped inside and gestured for me to follow.

I hesitated. What the hell was going on?

As I stepped inside, the door slammed shut behind me with a mechanical thud.

 ”Woah!”

The small room lurched downwards, its motion smooth yet unnerving. So, this was some sort of underground elevator. My mind raced—where was I being taken?

Ethan smirked slightly. “You’re cautious. Good. Aylward-kun, during your interview, you said you wanted to support Aqua-sama… to protect the peace of those who work for him, yes?”

 ”Yeah, that’s right.”

Joining the Holy Aqua Religion wasn’t difficult. But once you were in, the real challenge began—passing the department’s placement exams. It didn’t matter who you were, your age, or your wealth. If you wanted a special role, you had to prove yourself.

I had barely passed the physical test but had scored well enough in others. Now, here I was, assigned to a department I still didn’t fully understand.

”We, the IAF, are here to help Aqua-sama achieve the impossible—without his knowledge,” Ethan explained, his tone almost philosophical.

I nodded slowly. On the surface, it didn’t sound so bad. But acting in secret, without consent? That seemed off to me. The lack of communication could cause more harm than good.

”What if Aqua-sama doesn’t want things done this way?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Excellent question. You were tested on loyalty to Aqua-sama, and your answer was that you would disobey the Saint and even the Twelve Bishops if it was for Aqua-sama’s benefit. Well, that’s exactly why you’re here. Only those who think for themselves are recruited.”

Wait. So this wasn’t just a military unit? Everyone here was interpreting Aqua-sama’s wishes in their own way—there was no uniformity in action?

 This felt… dangerous.

The elevator stopped, and the door opened again. Ethan gestured for me to step out, and I followed, wide-eyed.

”Aylward-kun, welcome once more,” Ethan said, voice soft yet proud.

I looked around. The room—no, the space—was unlike anything I’d ever seen. Sleek, modern technology mixed with spy-film aesthetics. And there were so many men here. Wait—was that a woman passing by? Was that… a man in disguise? I blinked. All the women here were dressed as men, and vice versa.

”Aylward-kun, this is your desk. We need someone with strong social skills like you to support the team. We’ve got a lot of ex-Hikikomori and reformed men working here, so… well, they’re a bit socially awkward,” Ethan said, gesturing to a desk with a small nameplate.

”Uh, sure,” I said, still processing.

And just like that, my journey with the Holy Aqua Religion began.

* * *

I wrapped up my first day’s work, mentally drained, and headed straight to the jazz bar I frequented.

 ”Welcome.”

The bartender greeted me, a faint smile on her lips.

 ”Black coffee. Strong.”

As I waited for my drink, my mind wandered. That woman behind the counter… was that Oto Rurika? The actress who had fallen from grace after the scandal? I took a sip, lost in thought. Her face reminded me of a day long past, when my daughter Leticia came home from school, eyes red from crying.

’Papa, I might get suspended… I don’t know what to do.’

It wasn’t uncommon for daughters of single fathers to get targeted. Beatrice, my oldest, would’ve stood up for herself. Serafina, the youngest, wouldn’t have cared. But Leticia… she was quiet, introspective. That was why they went after her.
