Chapter 147 Resident Physician Internal Medicine

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

After passing the national medical licensing exam, Haruto and his peers were now entering the next stage—clinical training. This period, commonly known as residency, would last for two years.

Haruto, however, had no grand ambitions of becoming a renowned doctor. His goal was simple: open his own massage therapy clinic. Working at a hospital was more of a stepping stone than a calling. That’s why, while he intended to complete the mandatory two-year residency, his classmate Akane was taking a different path—three additional years of specialized training.

Naturally, they would be stationed at different hospitals.

Haruto remained in Chiba, continuing his clinical training at Chiba University Hospital. Meanwhile, Akane returned to her hometown, starting her residency at the Prefectural Medical University Hospital.

The biggest shift from his university clinical training to his current role was the “position” he now held. Back then, he was just a student, tagging along and learning. Now, with a full medical license, he was officially a physician. He could perform medical procedures on real patients.

Of course, by law, residency was a legal requirement. Without it, one couldn’t manage or open a clinic in Japan.

 ”Next, please~”

Normally, patients would be called through an electronic display in the waiting room. But since many visitors were elderly, it was common practice for staff to call out names directly.

”What brings you in today?” Haruto asked.

 ”I feel sluggish… like I’ve got a cold.”

”Let me take a listen to your chest. Please lift your jacket a little.”

He checked the patient, moving quickly but carefully.

”Just to be safe, let’s do an influenza test.”

 A short while later…

”It’s positive. I’ll prescribe some medication. Please rest and take care of yourself.

 ’Next, please~’

 ”What brings you in today?”

 ”My throat hurts…”

”Alright. Open wide—let me take a look.”

 A short inspection followed.

”It’s a common cold. I’ll prescribe something for the symptoms. Make sure to rest.”

As Haruto continued cycling through patients, a nurse approached quietly.

 ”…Excuse me, Ichijou-sensei?”

 ”Yes?”

Being called sensei still felt strange. A flicker of pride surfaced, but Haruto kept his expression neutral.

”I’ve noticed that your diagnoses are really accurate,” she said. “But… aren’t you moving a little fast?”

(Oh crap… Am I rushing too much?)

Chiba University Hospital handled a massive number of patients daily. Doctors barely had time to eat, let alone breathe. As a resident, Haruto was technically allowed lunch breaks, but for internal medicine, speed and precision were everything.

In Haruto’s case, his ability to sense a patient’s condition with just a light touch gave him an edge. He could often make a diagnosis in seconds. But simply declaring a result without showing the process wasn’t enough. Supervisors and patients both needed to see it.

That’s why he’d been pacing himself, gradually gaining trust until he was permitted to handle simpler cases on his own. Still, it seemed he’d gone a bit too fast today.

”…I’ll take a bit more time with each examination from now on,” he said quietly.

The nurse nodded. “Yes, I think the patients would feel more at ease that way.”

It wasn’t common for a nurse to offer a suggestion so directly. But modern medical environments emphasized cooperation between staff, not hierarchy. Nurses and doctors were partners now.

Haruto understood that—even if it caught him off guard a little.

Yet in contrast, outside these walls, the world still obsessed over where one graduated from. Status, superiority… everything came down to which university name was stamped on your degree.

 ’Next person, please~’

 ”What brings you here today?”

 ”There’s… something like a lump.”
