Chapter 149 Surgical Resident

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The residency program was set for two years, with a clear training path already laid out.

In the first year, Haruto would spend six months in internal medicine, followed by three months in surgery, and then another three months divided between emergency medicine and anesthesiology.

The second year would shift focus to a broader view—one month each in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and community health. The remaining time would be dedicated to his chosen specialty.

Haruto Ichijou, now a first-year resident, had already earned a bit of a reputation—though not the kind he wanted. During his internal medicine rotation, he was quietly labeled a “problem child.” He’d ended up spending the entire period under the watchful eye of his supervising doctor.

But that chapter was over. Today, he was moving into the surgical department.

”I look forward to working with you starting today,” Haruto said, bowing politely.

The surgeon who greeted him raised an eyebrow. “So you’re Ichijou-kun. I’ve heard some things from internal medicine.”

 ”…Things?”

”Yes. Your diagnostic ability is solid, but there were some… concerns about how you talk to patients.”

 ”…I see. I’m sorry.”

”Oh, no need to apologize! I’m not blaming you. Actually, surgery might be a better fit for your style.”

Compared to internal medicine, surgery often involved less direct interaction with patients. As long as he didn’t blurt out something reckless like, “I’ll make sure this surgery is a success!”, it should be manageable.

”I’ll… do my best in surgery,” Haruto said, holding back the words he almost said.

Truthfully, Haruto didn’t think he had any real skill with surgical techniques. His hands weren’t especially steady. The only reason he’d managed so far was because of his special ability—an innate power to heal injuries. Thanks to that, he could close wounds and stabilize patients with ease. But without it, he was just average.

”All right then, let’s head to the surgical conference.”

*Conference regarding meetings and discussions of surgeries.*

 ”Yes!”

The conference was a daily meeting to discuss the procedures scheduled for the day. Afterward, the doctors would begin their ward rounds.

Ward rounds involved moving from patient to patient, reviewing each one’s condition and treatment plan. It was a routine Haruto had only seen on TV until now.

(So this is what it’s like in real life… I wonder if there’s some kind of political stuff going on between the professors?)

Haruto wasn’t interested in hospital politics or internal factions. He simply listened carefully to each report, taking detailed notes as he followed the group.

When the ward rounds ended, the surgical procedures began—starting with the ones discussed that morning. Haruto joined in under the guidance of his supervising doctor.

”Nice work. So Ichijou’s surgical skills are… average, huh?”

”Thank you. If anything, I’m stronger with diagnosis.”

It was surprising that the doctor could size him up after just one surgery. Still, his tone wasn’t unkind.

”Well, you’re still young. You’ll get better. Just make sure you eat when you can.”

”Yes! I look forward to working with you again this afternoon.”

After the morning operation, Haruto took advantage of a short break to grab lunch. In surgery, you never knew when a procedure might run long—or when an emergency would come up. Eating when you had time was crucial.

”Hey, Ichijou! I heard there’s a transplant surgery this afternoon. Want to come observe?”

 ”Ah, sorry. I’ve got plans.”

Another resident invited him to observe one of the more major surgeries, but Haruto declined. There was something else he needed to do.

Later that afternoon, Haruto assisted in a scheduled surgery alongside his attending physician. While the other doctors focused on the transplant case, Haruto quietly continued his rounds, moving from patient to patient with steady footsteps.
