Chapter 154 Management Meeting

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

In the large conference room of Chiba University Hospital, the hospital director, department heads, and chief physicians gathered for an important management meeting.

”Let’s get started,” the director announced. “First, this year’s financial report needs serious revisions.”

”Wait, did we make a big profit?” one department head asked hopefully.

”No,” the finance officer replied, “it’s the opposite. We’re running a deficit.”

”A deficit? What does that even mean?” murmurs spread around the room, confusion clearly visible on everyone’s faces.

The explanation left the director baffled—and honestly, no one could quite believe it. How could so many hospitalized patients suddenly recover? It didn’t add up.

Doctors always put saving lives first. But there was one thing everyone had to understand: hospitals aren’t charities. They need money to keep running.

Chiba University Hospital employed about 3,000 people, with personnel costs alone close to 7 billion yen. That money came from surgeries and hospital stays.

For example, an appendectomy cost a patient about 50,000 yen for outpatient care and 100,000 to 200,000 yen for hospitalization—patients paid 30% of that, while the government covered the rest.

Haruto, one of the doctors, had treated a cancer patient with his ability. From management’s view, surgery was almost impossible, so they planned to keep going with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy costs varied—usually around 300,000 yen a month, but expensive treatments could exceed 500,000 yen. At full cost, that meant about 990,000 yen to 1,650,000 yen per month. Advanced medical care could go over 3 million yen monthly, nearly 10 million yen fully covered.

This was just basic math, but because Haruto’s abilities helped patients recover quickly, the hospital lost a huge amount of revenue. And it wasn’t just one patient—there were many. The total loss was staggering.

For Haruto and the patients, this was great news. But from management’s perspective, it was a nightmare.

”This can’t be real!” one head doctor shouted.

”It is,” the finance officer said calmly. “It’s happening right now.”

”Since patients are recovering, surgeries that couldn’t happen before are now possible.”

”That’s part of the deficit too!” another snapped.

”By the way,” a man from the medical office said quietly, “there’s a rumor about a resident who’s been visiting the rooms of those recovered patients a lot.”

Most in the room thought that was ridiculous. Just someone going in and out of rooms couldn’t explain all this.

But one person had a different thought. Kuroiwa Osamu, the hospital director, stared silently.

(Ichijou Haruto? That name sounds familiar…)

Notes:

• Osamu – Male. Ryuichi’s father and the director of Chiba University Hospital. He uses his wealth and power to cover up Ryuichi’s misdeeds, though he has scolded him in the past.
