Chapter 184 Haruto’s Consideration
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The next day, Haruto sat alone in the waiting room, quietly watching the TV. The store was empty, with not a single customer in sight.
The day before, he had closed up early and gone to an electronics store, where he ended up buying two wall-mounted televisions.
”Wouldn’t one have been enough?” Harue asked, glancing at the boxes stacked beside the wall.
”If I’m going to do it, I figured I should set one up at Mom’s place too.”
He had bought two with the intention of installing one at Harue’s beauty salon. At the moment, the salon only took clients by appointment, so a TV might not be necessary. But if they ever opened up to walk-ins, it would be useful.
”You’re getting ahead of yourself. Worry about that when there are more customers.”
”…Yeah, you’re right.”
Haruto scratched his cheek awkwardly, accepting the reasonable point. Still, he kept glancing nervously at the clock on the wall.
Harue let out a sigh. “If you’re that worried, just go already.”
”But the store—”
”There’s no one here.”
”Well… someone might show up later.”
”If they do, I’ll handle it. You want to go, don’t you, Haru-kun?”
Though she spoke with a tired sigh, there was a note of concern in Harue’s voice as well.
After Yuna and the others left the day before, Harue had spoken with Haruto, who was staring intently at the map on his computer. During that talk, he had shared his concerns, and Harue had also felt that the meeting location seemed a bit off.
”Thanks, Mom. I’m still uneasy, so I’ll check it out.”
”Just don’t do anything reckless, Haru-kun! You may have your ability, but don’t rely on it too much.”
”I know! I’ll be careful.”
With that, Haruto turned and dashed out the door. Harue watched his back as he left, recalling their conversation from the previous night…
”This place seems off, doesn’t it?” Haruto had said.
”Yeah. I’ve seen that building before, but it doesn’t look like where a real company would set up an office.”
”You’re right… it’s bothering me.”
”Should we contact the police?”
”Even if we told them, they probably wouldn’t do anything.”
The police only acted once something had actually happened. Just saying something might happen wouldn’t be enough to move them. Even if officers went to check, without an incident, it would just be written off as a ‘meeting.’
”So, what are you going to do?”
”I was thinking of going myself…”
”What are you even saying? If there really are dangerous people, it’s too risky for you to go alone!”
”But I have my ability, remember? Even if I get stabbed, I’ll heal right away. It’ll be fine.”
”And if they have a gun?”
”Same thing. I’ll heal from that too!”
Haruto wasn’t lying.
But he wasn’t telling the whole truth either.
If the enemy had a firearm and Haruto was shot in the head, the chances of survival would plummet.
There wasn’t exact data on it, but some sources claimed that being shot in the head carried a 95% fatality rate.
Still, that left a 5% chance of survival.
Most people associated a shot to the head with instant death, but that wasn’t always the case.
Roughly 80% of the brain was made up of the cerebrum—the part that handled thought and memory. It was the largest portion. But the area that connected it to the spinal cord was called the brainstem.
The brainstem controlled vital functions. If it was damaged, surviving would be nearly impossible.
However, if the brainstem remained untouched, and only the cerebrum was injured, there was still a chance. A slim one—but a chance nonetheless.
And for Haruto, whose body could heal from most wounds almost instantly, the odds were higher still.
Even so, the likelihood of actually encountering someone with a gun in Japan was extremely low. Haruto chose not to mention any of this to Harue, not wanting to worry her more than necessary.
”…Maybe I should’ve made him wear a cooking pot or something,” Harue muttered to herself with a sigh, still staring at the door long after her son had disappeared.
It seemed Haruto’s worries hadn’t been completely misplaced after all.
