Volume 7 Chapter 14 Epilogue: The Adventurer Buys A House

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Now, you two are officially my slaves,” I said. “Again, nice to be working with you.”

”Yes! I’ll be a splendid slave!” the young beastgirl cried, tail twitching with excitement.

”My daughter and I will do our utmost,” Ms. Mor said, bowing her head. “Please favor us with your continued kindness.”

This is the Verdaine city slave registration office.

Right now, in front of me, a beastman mother and daughter—both wearing brand-new silver collars—bowed their heads in formal slave etiquette.

Lena had recommended it, and as they wished, I made them my slaves.

Beastmen, like half-elves, are vulnerable in the human world.

Registering as Sir Soyuz’s slaves was, in effect, what protected them. Lena had told me that after Georgia and Ms. Mor ended up under my command.

Certainly, beastmen face oppression here. But as long as they’re slaves, owned by someone with standing, the law guarantees them a basic level of safety. In this country, stealing or harming another person’s slave is a serious crime.

As someone who once lived as a slave myself, this hurt on a personal level—but if it meant protecting them, there was no better option.

”Thank you for your hard work,” Lena said, stepping toward us.

”You’re late, Soyuu,” Vera added, arms crossed.

Lena and Vera, who had been waiting outside the registration office, joined the beastman pair in front of me.

 A Southerner.

 A half-elf.

 A mature beastwoman.

 A young beastgirl.

Before I knew it, I had a diverse little group of four slaves.

And they all loved me with everything they had.

I loved them, too—with all my heart.

…Which made it hard to deny that, somewhere along the line, I’d gotten irreparably messed up as a person.

Oh well. No point in agonizing over it now. I’d just keep pushing forward with the same stubborn heart I always had.

With two women—Lena and Vera—already by my side, my reputation was in ruins anyway. I had nothing left to lose.

 So—

”Well then,” I said, raising my voice in a deliberately bright tone, “the troublesome procedures are over—let’s go home. To our house.”

I called out to my beloved slaves, a half-step ahead of them on the dusty street.

After reporting to the guildmaster about the Falz affair—where I turned up nothing useful, despite the trouble—

”Five people in total… That boarding house won’t do anymore,” I muttered.

The place I lived in only had two rooms, and now a beastman mother and daughter were with us. We could technically cram in, but that wasn’t the kind of life I wanted for any of us.

 ”Hmm… Maybe I’ll buy a house,” I decided aloud.

With help from the guild, I set out to do just that.

 From the guildmaster:

”Why do you pick up women every time you go on an adventure?! And this time it’s a beastman parent and child? How indiscriminate are you?! Have some common sense and moderation!”

Then, from the receptionist—who had a nasty mouth and an even nastier attitude:

”Southern broad, half-elf, beastman mom and daughter… What are you, a p**sy collector? You’re the worst. Don’t look at me.”

T/N: “P**sy collector” renders the slang まんこ (manko) used in the original. Crude language preserved to reflect character.

Despite that abuse, I somehow got them to introduce me to a property.

That’s how I ended up buying this old mansion on the outskirts of Verdaine. It had way too many rooms and hadn’t seen a broom or mop in years.

Dust blanketed everything, and the whole place needed repairs. Still, it had potential.

It was going to take time and elbow grease, but I could make it livable.

The next day, we came to see our new home.

I’d already toured it before, but for the others, this was their first time.

They stared up at the hulking, weatherworn building—not beautiful by any means, but impressive in size—with shining eyes.

”To think we could buy such a magnificent mansion… Sir Soyuz must be rich,” Lena said, gazing at me with open admiration.

”Nah,” I replied. “There’s no way I’d have that kinda money. It’s on installments.”

”Installments…? What exactly is that?” Vera asked, frowning slightly.

”Basically, it’s when you can’t pay all at once, so you split it into smaller payments over time. I bought this place with a big debt.”

That was the truth. I borrowed the money from the guild.

Which meant I couldn’t refuse guild work for a while.

The guildmaster setting things up so smoothly was no act of kindness. He’d clearly planned this—trap me with debt, fill in the outer moat, and work me to the bone. Honestly, the transparency of it was almost refreshing.

Well, considering the elf issue still had no solution in sight, this was probably inevitable.

”Whatever,” I said. “From today on, this is where my family lives.”

They all stared at me in stunned silence.

”Due to this country’s laws, I had to register you as slaves—but I don’t think of you that way. I think of all four of you as my beloved wives… So, we’re family.”

I looked at each of them in turn.

Lena hugged herself tightly, body trembling, breathing quick and hot.

Vera’s eyes widened—then she broke into a dazzling smile.

Georgia’s tail whipped behind her in a blur, her eyes gleaming.

Ms. Mor dropped to her knees and bowed deeply.

Something bloomed warm in my chest. They accepted me.

 They accepted my words.

 And that feeling…

 That feeling was happiness.

Here is the revised passage with all specified editorial tasks applied:

* * *

”Okay, things are gonna get tough from here,” I said. “First, we need to fix the place up enough to live in, and then we’ve got to find furniture and the basics for daily life. So…”

I turned toward Lena, who was still red-faced and breathing hard.

”Lena. Starting today, I want you to be the head slave—or honestly, the first wife—and lead everyone. Can you do that?”

She clapped a hand over her mouth, and tears spilled down her cheeks.

 ”M-Me, the head…” she whispered.

”Yeah. Head slave and first wife,” I said, holding her gaze. “You’ll do it, right?”

”…Yes! I will do my best to meet Sir Soyuz’s expectations!” she cried, her voice trembling with gratitude.

She bowed deeply, then quickly wiped her tears away. With both hands, she slapped her cheeks—smack [slap]—and straightened up to face the other three.

”Though young and inexperienced, I will follow Sir Soyuz’s words and serve as the head,” she declared. “I’m sure I’ll fall short in many ways, so I humbly ask for everyone’s help.”

 She bowed deeply once more.

”Yes, I will!” one of the girls chirped in a cute, childish way.

”Yeah! I’ll do my best!” another said brightly. [T/N: “Boku” is a masculine first-person pronoun.]

”I’ll probably be more of a burden than help,” the last one added, “but I’ll do my best—along with my daughter.”

Each of them answered Lena with radiant smiles. Watching them, my chest felt light. They’re really getting along—and I couldn’t be more grateful.

 Lena.

 Vera.

 Georgia.

All of them had endured terrible pasts. And now, somehow, they all loved me—this broken, hopeless bum of a man.

I want to make them happy.

Of course, I haven’t given up on the goal of finding my mentor.

But I’ve come to realize—quietly, suddenly—that my biggest goal has shifted without me noticing. And honestly, I’m okay with that.

Notes:

• Verdaine – The largest local city in the region, ruled by the Margrave of Verdaine. It houses a branch of the Adventurers Guild and is the protagonist’s temporary base. Located within walking distance from the unnamed village where Lena was found.

• Lena – Female. A young slave girl in her early teens. Her appearance is emaciated with brown skin, long black hair, and grotesque scars across her face, including one that blinds her left eye. She wears a black collar and tattered clothing. Her relationship to the protagonist is that of a rescued victim. She is silent and appears to have endured severe physical and emotional abuse.

• Falz – A vibrant town, teeming with life, but also a hotspot for criminal activity. A place where danger lurks in the shadows.
