”So, there was no way but to fight, huh?” Kiritani asked the scrawny old man.
The old man nodded gravely. “I’m sorry, but that’s correct.”
Gotanba snapped, “Huh? That’s all just for your convenience, right? Why do they have to fight for this world?”
Even the usually composed vice class rep, Mineyama, frowned and chimed in, “In the first place, they are just ordinary students from a peaceful world! Even if I dabbled in ancient martial arts, being told to become heroes of salvation and fight—it was impossible to imagine!”
(Ah! …Could it be that Mineyama just set a flag…)
But the scrawny old man cut the tension with a firm voice, “Then please don’t worry.” He pulled from the box before him a glowing red orb—resembling a fortune teller’s crystal ball—and held it aloft for all to see.
”This was a precious gem passed down in their country! According to the legend of the saint who heard the voice of God, those who came from the otherworld possessed unique power the moment they arrived in this world! If everyone wielded unique power, the demon king’s army would be nothing to fear!”
The otaku group erupted with excitement. “It’s here! Otherworld cheat!” one shouted.
”My hidden power is finally awakening!” another exclaimed.
”Alright! Leave it to me! This world is as good as saved,” said a third, pumping a fist in the air.
Their enthusiasm was contagious. Even those indifferent to their origins began whispering eagerly, “Hey, what kind of skill do you think they’d get? I want to be strong!”
”Yeah, right! I hope it feels invincible!”
”Oh, me too!”
”Right?”
They were adapting far too quickly… Their families back home must be mourning their sudden disappearance, right?
A pang struck Sanai’s chest as thoughts of his own family crossed his mind. He recalled his parents’ faces, looking at him as if he were a burden. His chest tightened unexpectedly. He murmured under his breath, eyes downcast, “Well… my family probably wouldn’t think such things…”
”Sanai, are you okay? You look unwell…” Hiyori Sashima asked, concern softening her voice.
Before he could react, Sashima was watching him. She was a quiet, bookish girl from the library committee, the only one who had helped him search for a home for a stray cat. Beyond that, they barely spoke. To be honest, it was surprising someone would show concern for a loner like him.
”I’m sorry,” Sanai said, managing a small smile. “Seeing the injured people made me feel a bit sick, but I’d be fine soon. Thank you, Sashima.”
She nodded gently. “Really? I can’t do much in this situation, but please don’t push yourself, okay, Sanai?”
With that, she returned to the group of girls, her footsteps light on the cracked pavement.
As if waiting for Sashima’s departure, the silent king rose heavily, his voice deep and solemn.
”O hero of the otherworld…”
He paused, the weight of his words filling the air.
”I want you to save this world with your unique power.”
