Chapter 53 The History of Potions
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Ayumu set aside the book he had just finished and opened a historical tome on potions.
”The Origin and Evolution of Potions,” authored by the Free Yugan Alliance Merchant Guild Union
There are various types and forms of potions commonly available today. Most people are familiar with potions that accelerate the healing of external injuries.
As most readers of this book likely already know, these potions are primarily made by boiling down the medicinal components of Fluctuating Herb and then concentrating them using a still. However, when asked, “Can anyone make them with ease?” the answer is not so simple.
To begin, let us first unravel the origins of potions.
It is essential for readers to understand that the knowledge and expertise required to manufacture potions were established relatively recently.
To briefly touch on the history of Yugan, the imperial family, in an effort to avoid internal power struggles, practiced frequent intermarriage. This led to the prevalence of severe illnesses within the lineage. To save the imperial family, the Imperial Healer Division was established, marking the beginning of global potion manufacturing.
At that time, Eva Rhines, a Healing Artisan from Elandric serving the court, had long been curious about why beastfolk were less susceptible to illness. “Beastfolk are closer to animals, so their bodies must be sturdier than humans,” people believed, and it was considered common knowledge, so no one thought to investigate further.
However, Eva Rhines, unbound by conventional thinking, traveled to the Lusrith Beastfolk Kingdom to observe the beastfolk’s way of life. Her attention was drawn to the Cath-sith, revered as spirits by the beastfolk.
The Cath-sith, residing in the Danucool Autonomous Region of the Lusrith Beastfolk Kingdom, were known for their love of cooking and their ancient practice of grinding spices and seasonings using mortars, pestles, and earthenware. However, they often made mistakes in their concoctions.
Among these failures were mixtures that proved effective against wounds, illnesses, and even poisoning. Unaware of their discoveries, the Cath-sith inadvertently sold these failed creations at low prices to the beastfolk.
Surprisingly, this was the origin of potions. The Cath-sith’s culinary seasonings had unknowingly laid the foundation for pharmaceutical techniques. Eva Rhines was quick to recognize this, meticulously observing and recording the Cath-sith’s processes.
Upon returning to Yugan, she became the first human to successfully create potions specifically for healing injuries and illnesses. She went on to develop numerous other potions, earning high praise from Yugan’s leadership. However…
Having lost her son to illness, she declared, “No other mother should endure such pain…” and refused to allow Yugan to monopolize her knowledge and experience in potion-making.
The ruling elite, furious, exclaimed, “After using state funds, how dare you?!” and dismissed her from her position as court healer. Though she lost her job, Eva, having already lost her son to a plague and her husband during her time in the Kingdom of Elandric, was not overly disheartened.
Thanks to her contributions, potions are now widespread across both the Central Continent and the Beastfolk Continent, significantly enhancing health and happiness. Yet, her end was a somber one.
Finally, this book was jointly produced by the Free Yugan Alliance Merchant Guild Union, with each guild contributing funds, to ensure Eva Rhines’s achievements are deeply recognized by many.
The Free Yugan Alliance Merchant Guild Union, representing the citizens, expresses gratitude and deep condolences to the late Eva Rhines.

This work is dedicated to her in the afterlife…

”There were truly remarkable people in this world too. Hmm? Rhines…?”
No, that can’t be right! To equate that irritable, post-menopausal elder with such a great figure would surely anger Eva Rhines. They must be different individuals with the same name.
(Besides, when I graduated from the Alchemist Guild, Master Rhines was still alive…)
Ayumu stopped himself from thinking further and closed the book.
