Rerobaku 54

Chapter 54 A Tedious Task…

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Ayumu continued to pore over tomes on potions, eventually concluding: “Perhaps the key lies in enhancing the efficacy of high potions by adding various materials, maintaining their potency, and directly delivering the active ingredients to the affected area to supplement the body’s natural healing abilities?” With this hypothesis in mind, he embarked on improving potions the following day.

(Already, this world’s pioneers have experimented with ointment-type potions, oral tablets, and liquid medications, achieving notable results…)

Alongside studying recipes and new ingredients, Ayumu requested research papers from other alchemists through Mr. Baldric. He discovered that this world boasted remarkably talented individuals. One paper noted: “After testing various materials, grinding the seeds of the Ashika tree and adding them to liquid potions significantly enhanced their efficacy…”

Another report from the Central Continent’s Magnus Magic Nation, Kylgen Province, detailed the successful development of a new potion material using the Art of Material Synthesis. This ointment-type potion, donated to the Viness Church for charitable use and testing, provided relief for the poor from ailments like stiff shoulders, lower back pain, and inflammation. Extensive observations confirmed no harmful side effects.

Ayumu couldn’t help but wonder, (Is it reckless to attempt improving potions myself?) Yet, having committed to the task, he was determined to achieve some results.

”Alright, I’ll start with what I can,” he muttered, translating papers from the Central Continent while referencing his notes.

Until now, he lacked the financial means or opportunity to learn this world’s script, but he resolved: (I’ll memorize it now.) Fortunately, he understood the language, making it possible to compare it to Japan’s writing system.

This world’s script resembled Greek or Cyrillic characters, likely an alphabet or something similar.

”I should be able to translate and memorize it, but it’s going to be grueling,” he grumbled, steadily working through the texts.

”Right, right… So, this is ‘L’ in the Beastfolk Continent…”

”And this becomes ‘A’ in the Central Continent…”

Ayumu recalled the days when his parents were still on good terms, and his father would translate biblical texts for him.

”Who would’ve thought that what my strict father taught me would come in handy in another world…”

 Life was full of irony.

Despite his thoughts, his translation speed steadily improved.

”Alright… I’ve pretty much got it down,” he said humbly, though there was no one around to hear him—a sad trait of his introverted nature.

Yet, in his mind, the scripts of both the Central and Beastfolk Continents were now perfectly memorized.

With his preparations complete, Ayumu was ready to begin developing new potions.

One thing caught Ayumu’s attention in the potion literature:

”Come to think of it, there’s no mention of syringe-type potions…”

If syringes hadn’t been developed in this world yet, it was worth experimenting with. Grabbing a piece of parchment, he quickly sketched a design. A needleless, pressure-type syringe would be ideal for harsh environments.

This design eliminated the risk of bent needles. Integrating the needle, grip, and pressure mechanism into a single power pack would enhance the syringe’s durability. The challenge lay in designing the pressure mechanism.

 ”Hmm…”

In his original world, pressure syringes used spring force to concentrate pressure through a tight nozzle, allowing the liquid to penetrate the skin’s surface.

”So, the issues are developing a new liquid medication, creating ampules to hold it, and most critically, crafting the spring…”

A spring might seem simple, but from a materials science perspective, creating one to specification was no easy feat. Even during World War II, when metallurgy was relatively advanced, Japan struggled to produce springs. The Imperial Japanese Army’s inability to develop semi-automatic rifles was partly due to their lack of spring expertise.

Now, Ayumu had to craft a spring individually, using soft steel with a carbon content between 0.1 and 1.7%.

”This is going to be a tedious task…”

Ayumu approached his alchemy workstation, picked up a piece of scrap iron, and began crafting the spring.
