Chapter 84 Interlude – Torygg

That day, King Torygg of the dwarves heard his subordinate’s report and was so stunned that his mouth hung open, his eyes wide in disbelief.
”What nonsense is this?! Were you drunk, seeing things that weren’t there?!” he demanded.
The subordinate, whose duty was to review the writings of the technical apprentices dispatched from Yugan and send regular reports back to both the upper ranks of the Valend Cave Kingdom and the Free Yugan Coalition, stood firm. On the very first day, he had come across something alarming in a student’s notes, and the discovery had compelled him to bring the matter directly to the king.
”Don’t mock me, Your Majesty!” the man shot back, his words urgent and ragged. “I’ve held my drink all my life. I know what I saw, and I swear by the stone—it wasn’t a mistake! That apprentice is no ordinary brat. Just a glance at the defense gate, and somehow he grasped the entire structure. No human should be able to see through it like that! My king, I beg you—do not allow that student near any of Valend’s vital facilities!”
If the report were true, his warning carried terrible weight.
It had all begun when a Skyrunner in service to Yugan had arrived bearing a letter, requesting the kingdom accept apprentices “for the sake of advancing our shared knowledge.” The Yugan Empire of old had been famed under Emperor Yuri, and so, thinking it was best to accept the favor—even if it were a favor thrown away (T/N: proverb meaning “do a favor without expecting return”)—Torygg had agreed.
But if one mere apprentice could already discern the design of the kingdom’s most important line of defense, the mighty gate… this was no small threat.
”Send word at once!” Torygg thundered. “That apprentice must not be permitted to tour any crucial facility of Valend. Not a single gesture must betray our true intent. Should his pride be wounded and he appeal directly to Yugan, we would find ourselves in dire straits. Curse it all… this apprentice, and the affair with my daughter besides… what trouble has befallen us!”
With a weary sigh, King Torygg sank back into his golden throne, cradling his head in one hand, heavy with the weight of Ayumu’s growing shadow.
