Chapter 106 The Watcher from the Shadows

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Ah, I see… By adding these precious metals as additives, a passive film is formed on the surface of the metal, making it more durable and resistant to rust,” Ayumu muttered, intently observing the mechanical ironworking process in Valend Cave Kingdom. His words were meticulously recorded by Hiyori Sashima, whose neat handwriting made it far easier to summarize later than Ayumu’s hasty scrawl.

Why, you ask? Because Ayumu was rewriting it into the common language used on the Demi-human Continent.

”Humans are well aware that sand-like iron ore and coal are poor conductors of heat, but the dwarves here seem to preheat the materials and sinter them before they are added to the blast furnace,” Ayumu continued, explaining the intricate process.

”As I mentioned earlier, the properly prepared iron ore and coal are mixed in the right proportions before being poured into the furnace. From below, heated air is constantly supplied, reaching temperatures between 1200 to 1500 degrees Celsius. This is the process of producing pig iron in the Valend Cave Kingdom,” Ayumu concluded.

After reading this aloud, Sashima smiled at him. “Good work, Sanai,” she said kindly, and Ayumu felt a slight relief from his exhaustion.

”Thanks, Ms. Sashima,” Ayumu replied, grateful for the praise.

Meanwhile, unseen from the shadows, three figures were quietly watching the pair. None other than Princess Laura and her attendants had been observing Ayumu and Sashima from behind a rock.

”Wow… Who is that tall girl standing next to Mr. Sanai?” Princess Laura gasped in shock, her words filled with both surprise and disbelief.

As she recoiled, the heavy movements of her ample chest, along with the swaying of her maid’s similarly large assets, caused quite a stir.

”Calm down, Dear Princess Laura,” one of her attendants quickly said, trying to steady the princess. “That person is someone Mr. Sanai recently… brought along with him. She’s his companion.”

Despite the explanation, Princess Laura’s panic showed no signs of abating.

”What?! Is this… cheating?!” she cried out in a voice full of shock.

The other maid, remaining calm despite the situation, spoke with a measured tone. “But, Your Highness, you haven’t even held his hand, let alone started a relationship. So it’s hard to call this cheating, isn’t it?”

Princess Laura snapped back, “That’s a minor detail! Mr. Sanai and I are already destined to be married! If I, his future wife, think it’s cheating, then it is cheating!”

The two maids exchanged looks, their faces filled with confusion and concern, unsure of how to handle the situation.

Despite being raised in the opulent and romanticized court of Valend, where everything was about love and destiny, the two maids were still of noble rank and could understand the princess’s feelings, even if they didn’t entirely agree with them. They knew they had to support her as loyal attendants.

”Well, yes. Mr. Sanai has only just arrived in Valend,” one of the maids added, trying to calm the princess down.

”Indeed, it seems like an excellent opportunity to personally show Mr. Sanai around Valend, Your Highness,” the other maid chimed in, picking up on the idea.

”Yes… that’s a good idea,” Princess Laura agreed, her excitement beginning to grow. “If I go with him, I’m sure he’ll see that we are more than just acquaintances!”

The maids, seeing an opportunity, were eager to keep the momentum going.

”And while you’re at it, Your Highness, why not make it official? By spending time together, you could create a situation where Mr. Sanai might start to see you as his true partner!”

Both maids now had the same mischievous glint in their eyes.

”Yes, exactly!” one of them said eagerly. “If you were to get pregnant with Mr. Sanai’s child, Your Majesty would have no choice but to accept him as your future husband!”

Princess Laura froze, her face flushing crimson. “Wh-what?! But… but… this is my first time, and… and… I can’t… be seen as the kind of girl who would… do such things so soon!”

Her frantic gestures only made her more flustered as she shook her hands wildly, trying to push away the idea.

”Ugh, this is so complicated,” Ayumu muttered under his breath, feeling the weight of the situation without even realizing what was happening behind the scenes. Meanwhile, the maids, eager to continue their “helpful” suggestions, were already planning how to keep Sashima occupied, creating a situation where Princess Laura could get closer to Ayumu.
