After meeting up with Sashima, Ayumu finally started to evacuate.
Crowds of citizens were already lining up to enter strongholds and fortresses, but there was no big panic. The dwarves stayed calm without complaint.
”Everyone is pretty calm, huh?”
Hiyori Sashima, his classmate, pointed it out. Then the palace stewards and chamberlains, who were also evacuating, spoke up.
”We train for emergencies often, you see.”
”Yes. We trust in our king and army’s victory. We have not the slightest worry.”

The moment he understood, the air suddenly shook!
Ah! ―― Before he could even gasp, the dome-shaped barrier of Valend’s wall collapsed, and out came a giant winged ant, at least twenty meters long!

With a shocked face, Ayumu even let his nose run.
The winged ant had a huge, powerful jaw… a terrifying face! Its massive body could be seen even from far away in the dark.
To be honest, he felt like he might wet himself from the front and back. That monster was not something humans could ever beat!
The dwarves, stewards, and chamberlains who had been calm only moments ago now shoved each other aside and ran in panic.
Ayumu looked around. The guards tried to hold back the crowd to prevent people from being crushed, but they were in no shape to do anything about the giant ant.
Even Sashima trembled, shaking Ayumu’s body. “W-we have to run too! Sanai!!”
But someone had to stop that monster.
(Ahh… why did it turn out like this…)
If nobody stopped the beast, either the fleeing civilians or King Torygg’s army would be attacked from behind.
He could not sit and watch familiar faces die… so…
(I really don’t want to, but… I have to do it myself…)
He tore open the pack he had prepared and pulled out simple battle magic circles, a spellbook, and traps meant for the Birene Mine Tunnel. Then he threw the rest of his bag to Sashima.
”Ms. Sashima! Please take care of this!”
”Eh?! Wait, Sanai?! Where are you going?!”
Her shocked voice rang out behind him, but Ayumu, who had made up his mind, did not look back.
