Chapter 126 Uh, Wait… This Counts as a Reward, Right?

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

So apparently, the shiny new rank they’d slapped on him was called “Special Honorary Count.”

 ”…Wait, that’s a thing?”

”Never heard of it,” muttered even the surrounding nobles, scratching their heads.

Not knowing your own title was a pretty bad look, so Ayumu had Ninim dig into the archives. Turns out, the “Special Honorary Count” system had been created back when the Yugan Empire was still around. Every once in a while, a commoner did something extraordinary, and the crown needed a way to reward them. Enter this special title: one-generation-only nobility, full privileges, no dynasty.

And the last time it had been used? Nine hundred years ago. Basically fossilized.

On paper, it was as high as a marquis or a court count. In reality, it was a dusty antique pulled off the shelf and slapped on him for convenience.

Of course, the nobles laughed themselves sick.

And to make it worse, the fief they gave him? The “Old Imperial Capital of Keldan.” A once-proud city now reduced to… basically slum streets. From above, it looked like they’d just shoved both a junk title and a garbage district onto him. No wonder the whole court was snickering.

Then came his first “assigned personnel.”

First: Ninim, the bureaucrat from the hated Birene people. Not exactly popular in Yugan.

Second: a knight recently demoted and exiled from the Yugan Order. None other than Yoluminette—the woman who’d kicked a great noble where the sun didn’t shine.

Her story, according to her? She’d been on guard duty as usual when her employer, a wealthy Elandric noble, ordered her inside. Once she entered, the man stripped naked and demanded she do the same for “night service.”

Yoluminette’s response: knee straight to his family jewels.

Result: instant reassignment to Ayumu’s slum. A shining example of feudal “justice.”

So there it was: a flimsy title, a ruined city, and subordinates who were both incredibly skilled and carrying way too much baggage.

But the roster didn’t end there.

Word spread fast that Ayumu was now technically nobility, and opportunists pounced. Powerful locals sent their daughters as “maids,” a polite way of planting spies and cementing ties.

 - Rilina, daughter of a merchant protecting Birene black-market trade.

 - Nanari, daughter of the local Birene community head.

 - Luruna, daughter of a butcher-trade mogul.

All arrived at his door in maid uniforms.

And then came Sasami (10) and Cocoa (6)—children sent as servant girls. In his old world, that would’ve been flagged as child labor abuse in a heartbeat. But here, medieval rules applied: kids worked, or families starved. It was harsh, but reality.

Either way, Ayumu suddenly had a staff. A weird staff, but a staff.

Now the immediate problem was clear:

Cleaning and repairing the old government hall—

And, most importantly, finding money to pay for all of it.

”Securing revenue… is priority number one!!”
