Chapter 130 A Temporary Victory

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Fhaaah—hah, hah! Nothing beats eating a human child alive!”

One of the ogres tossed aside what was left of a mangled corpse, the small body broken from their feast. The child had survived in the ruins until now, but with the Union’s counteroffensive underway, capture had meant death.

”The screams are the best spice of all!” another ogre howled.

A child-sized harpy rushed in, wings beating frantically. “Enemy army! A massive force! I told you we should’ve struck first—why didn’t you agree to attack?!”

Annoyed, the ogre crushed her skull with a single blow, silencing her.

 ”Noisy pests,” he muttered.

 ”Fresh meat,” the other chuckled.

These were Gomul and Sogog, forward commanders of the demon king’s army. To them, humans weren’t an enemy. Humans were meat.

 ”Now then… the hunt begins.”

Their voices echoed across Union soil.

Meanwhile, Sakashita Marika, Yuzuki Yuka, and Miyake Yuka rode with the vanguard, tasked with seizing a foothold. Their wagons rumbled across the border alongside the liberation army.

Up ahead, dragon riders from Nainas torched enemy trenches with gouts of flame and fireballs. Goblins spilled out of the burning fortifications, their bodies writhing as fire devoured them. Even Yuzuki Yuka, staring wide-eyed, couldn’t stop herself from whispering, “That’s… awful.”

A scout rushed in. “Report from recon! Demon king’s army units sighted beyond the ridge!”

”Reinforcements? The dragon riders didn’t finish them? All units, dismount and prepare to engage!”

Soldiers poured from the wagons, forming ranks.

”Artillery mages and bowguard, ready your fire! Rain destruction on them!”

”Heavy infantry, turtle formation! Light infantry, guard the flanks with the cavalry!”

Orders rang out. Spells and arrows launched first, tearing swathes through the approaching horde. For a moment, demon flesh turned to shredded meat—but the advance didn’t falter. They climbed over the corpses of their own, charging faster.

Steel clashed. Shouts, screams, explosions of magic turned the field into chaos.

Losses mounted on both sides. But the humans had one saving grace: the Saint, Yuzuki Yuka. She fought just enough to shield herself, then unleashed area heal after area heal. Soldiers who should’ve fallen rose again. Their lines held. Casualties stayed low, while the demons bled heavily.

Of course, the enemy noticed. A sharp-eyed commander in the demon ranks barked orders, massing troops to crush the healer. But reaching her wasn’t easy.

Marika stood guard, body and weapon infused with strengthening magic. And Miyake Yuka, the Bow Hero, loosed one precise shot after another.

”Stay away from Yuzuki!” she roared, unleashing a Weapon Skill that burned across the battlefield like a laser. The demons’ offensive collapsed under the onslaught.

Sensing the battle lost, the demon troops broke and fled.

 Cheers erupted. “Victory! We’ve won!”

The Union forces surged forward, securing the rolling hills ahead—the planned foothold for their advance. Soon, reinforcements arrived: Sayumi Mineyama’s Hero party, hauling supplies and materials for fortifications. Camps were raised, supply lines secured. From here, the war for the Union would continue.

But the victory was only partial. The demon commander who had wisely ordered retreat, along with the enemy’s main force, still lived. The Union had won ground, but whether they could seize the entire land… that remained painfully uncertain.
