Rerobaku 166

Chapter 166 To the Lord…

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 She watched her child walk off to school, hand in hand with their friends, laughing like sunlight on water—and the woman’s eyes brimmed with tears. Back in the orphanage, that little face had never smiled. But now… now they were beaming, spending their days happily under the care of the Lord.

 There had been reasons, back then. She hadn’t wanted to give up her child, but life had forced her hand. Not for a single moment had she ever forgotten them. Of course, her heart longed to run to them even now, to scoop them up and hold them tight—but how could she? How could she face the child she had once abandoned? What kind of face could she possibly show them now…?

 Even so, she couldn’t let this go without saying something. She had to thank Lord Ayumu, somehow, no matter what. So the woman picked up a pen, and as if speaking to the child who had once come from her own body, she poured her heart into a letter—and entrusted it to them.

* * *

 A letter with no sender name showed up, addressed to Ayumu.

 Cocoa said some random lady had handed it to her in the street. Which—yeah. Suspicious.

 He almost didn’t open it. It could have been a trap or some cursed petition. But if it was actually important, ignoring it would be cruel. So, just in case, he changed into full protective gear, sealed himself behind bulletproof glass, and used a mechanical arm inside a steel box to open it. And inside, written in very clumsy Birene language, were these words:

 ’Please forgive the rudeness of suddenly sending a letter to someone as noble as you, Count of Keldan. I just could not sit still, knowing the kindness and compassion you have shown to the children… I only wanted to tell you my gratitude…

 Until just a short while ago, in Keldan it was normal for children from poor families or with no parents to be forced into harsh labor before they could even think for themselves. Only the rich few could afford not to send their children off to work.

 But now, the new Keldan you have built is so different from anywhere else ruled by other nobles. I can see it with my own eyes. Thank you!! From the bottom of my heart, thank you, dear Lord… from one Mother.’

 As he read it, he just sat there stunned. This was… the first time anyone in this world had ever thanked him. And at the same time, joy surged up so hard it brought tears to his eyes.

 ”It was the right choice.”

 He caught himself murmuring it out loud, then gently tucked the letter into his desk drawer. And a few days later, he bought a frame—just for that letter—and hung it up on the wall.

 —

 Honestly this chapter hits like a soft punch in the chest—warm, quiet, bittersweet. our chaos lord baby boy got his first “thank you” 🥲

Notes:

• Cocoa – Birene girl, tiny and round-cheeked with soft blonde hair | First in Ch.127 | Junior servant maid, clumsy but earnest | Orphan with no known family | Shadows Sasami everywhere and copies her antics | Met Ayumu as part of the first servant group, now joins Sasami’s wild wake-up attacks | Unique note: innocent copycat who causes chaos without ever realizing it
