Chapter 2 The Beginning

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”Kanata-kun… I like you.”

Maya said it softly, her cheeks tinged pink as she smiled up at him.

 ”If it’s with you… I don’t mind.”

Her fingers hesitated at the edge of her blazer, and then slowly began to slip it off her shoulders.

”—Wait, hey! What are you doing?!” Kanata’s voice cracked in panic.

”Because… you want to, right?” Maya’s hand was already drifting lower, toward the bulge growing at the front of his pants.

”Stop that! This is school!” His voice pitched high with desperation.

 ”Nope. Not stopping.”

Her small hand pressed against him through the fabric, teasing him with slow, playful rubs.

”Haaah… haaah…” His breath caught, ragged and hot.

(*This is bad… if this keeps up…!*)

Kanata tried to push her hand away, but Maya only leaned closer, her warm breath brushing his ear before her tongue traced a wet line along his neck.

 ”—ahh…!”

The sudden spark shot down his spine, and before he could stop it, heat was pooling between his legs.

(*No no no—this is way too fast…!*)

”Kusu… you don’t have to hold back,” she whispered, voice dripping sweet.

Before he could speak, Maya slipped her hand inside his waistband and freed him, and then—without warning—took him into her mouth. “Uhh—!”

The wet heat of her mouth made Kanata’s whole body jolt. He could feel himself already reaching the edge.

 (*Crap… I’m really gonna…!*)

”Maya—stop!” He grabbed at her shoulders, trying to pull her off, trying to think through the white noise in his skull.

 But—

 ”Nggh—!”

His hips bucked on their own, pushing deep into her throat before he could stop himself.

 ”—! S-sorry!!”

 ”Mmghh— *cough!* *cough cough!*”

She pulled back coughing, wiping her lips as she caught her breath, and guilt crashed over him like icewater.

”Are you okay?!” he asked, panic shooting through his voice.

”I’m fine… really.” She smiled faintly—and then bent down again, lips brushing over him like nothing had happened.

”Ahh—!” The slow, careful laps of her tongue dragged fire up his spine. His hips jerked helplessly.

 (*I’m seriously gonna lose it…!*)

Even as he thought it, his body betrayed him, growing harder in her mouth.

 ”Mmmf…”

When Maya finally let him go, a thin thread of saliva clung to her lips, and he stood there fully stiff, throbbing, all control gone.

 (*Dammit…*)

Before he even knew what he was doing, Kanata’s hand caught her head and pushed her mouth back down on him.

 ”Nggh—!”

Her eyes watered at the sudden force, her voice muffled around him, but Kanata kept thrusting, his breath ragged.

 ”Mmgh—! Mmgh—!”

Even while gagging, she kept her tongue moving, desperate and messy, until Kanata couldn’t take it anymore—his body jerked, and heat burst from him in a heavy rush.

 ”Ahhh—!”

 (*Oh crap—!*)

He scrambled to pull back, but it was already too late—

 ”*cough!* *cough cough!!*”

White streaks spilled from her mouth as she gasped for air, wiping her lips with her sleeve.

”…Are you okay?” His voice trembled.

”Yeah… I’m fine.” Her lips curled into a sly smile as her eyes locked with his.

That smile caught him—dragged him down like gravity—

—and then his eyes snapped open.

 ”…A dream, huh.”

Kanata lay there for a moment, staring blankly at the ceiling, and thought, (*If it was a dream, I wish it had gone further…*) before dragging himself up to get ready for school.

* * *

 ”Ohayoo!”

”Morning~ hey, about that stream last night—”

”Yeah yeah, it was crazy good, right—”

By ten minutes before the bell, the classroom was buzzing with voices, desks scraping, chairs thumping as everyone came in at once.

 ”Yesterday’s *Chevalier* was a god-tier episode-degozaru.”

 ”I know-degozaru! You could really feel Director Takahashi’s passion-degozaru.”

”The sound design was flawless too.”

”Totally. And more than anything, Jun-tan’s acting was just—”

 ”Ughhh, I’m so dead.”

 ”Whoa, Jun-kun, didn’t sleep?”

”Yeah, Shinobu kept me up all night.”

”Lucky! Hook me up with one of Shinobu-chan’s friends sometime!”

 ”Me too, me too!”

 …Ugh. So noisy.

Kunugi Kanata kept his head down on his desk, pretending to sleep. It was always like this. The guys near the top of the class caste bragged about who they’d slept with or who they were dating, the girls gushed about idols and dramas, and the so-called “otaku” kids down at the bottom of the caste debated the newest seasonal anime.

All of them had one thing in common: they looked like they were having fun. Unlike Kanata.

He wasn’t antisocial exactly, but he didn’t mind being alone. Actually, he preferred it. He kept up with popular games and anime, secretly followed a favorite voice actress, knew all the big streamers. He could talk about dramas or trending shows if needed. If someone threw a topic at him out of nowhere, he could handle it fine—at least on the surface. But once things got too deep, he’d get lost. So he never started conversations himself. Better to play dead and let the noise pass over him.

”Kunugi-kun, good morning. The teacher’s coming soon.”

The voice startled him. He lifted his head—and met Asagiri Maya’s smile.

 ”Fwaaahhh… mm… morning, Asagiri-san. You’re early today.”

Still rattled from the dream, he couldn’t quite meet her eyes, and faked a yawn to look away.

”Mm, is three minutes before the bell really early?” She tilted her head with a puzzled little smile.

Being neighbors in seating, they always traded a few words like this each morning. It was the only time of day she ever talked to him, and Kanata quietly treasured it.

”By the way… isn’t it kinda empty in here? Did I miss a holiday or something?”

”Of course not. Apparently a transfer student’s arriving today. Everyone went to sneak a peek.”

 ”Hmm. This class?”

”No clue. That’s why they’re peeking. Anyway, did you do the English prep? It’s the thirteenth, so Mikoshiba-sensei is definitely gonna pick people.”

”Nah. Knowing her, unless something random happens, it’s gonna be you, Eto, Kasai, Kudo… maybe Nomura or Negishi.”

 ”Wait, seriously?”

 ”Yeah. 68% chance.”

 ”…That’s such a weird number.”

She gave him an exasperated look.

”But well, if Kunugi-kun says so, maybe you’re right. I’ll prep just in case.” She smiled faintly, then opened her textbook.

 …Damn it.

Because of his own stupid comment, their usual chat ended a full minute early. That three-minute window with Maya was one of the best parts of his day, and he’d just cut it short.

There were three girls on his mind these days, all of them way out of reach—and Maya was the first. His neighbor, the only one who talked to him every morning, the girl who everyone liked. And every break, people swarmed her desk like bees, pushing him aside like he was invisible. These few quiet minutes before the bell were the only moments he had her to himself. And he’d wasted them.

And after that dream this morning… there was no way he could just casually start talking to her again now.

So he sank down against his desk once more, letting the noise wash over him.

Maybe something would change if he had a big enough push… but he couldn’t imagine ever taking that first step on his own.

The second girl who haunted his thoughts was Kitahara Sayaka from Class A, the one he ran into at lunch on the roof.

Kanata always ate alone up there, and Sayaka always trained during lunch. Their first real conversation had started when he finished eating and spaced out, and she suddenly pointed her shinai at him and said, “If you’re free, spar with me.”

He barely remembered the rules from class. She lived for it. He never stood a chance. That first lunch ended with him lying flat on the cold roof tiles, bruised and panting while Sayaka sheathed her sword like nothing had happened.

To her credit, maybe Sayaka had felt a little guilty about wrecking him that first time, because the very next day she’d shown up at lunch with a bento and offered it to him with a stiff nod. From then on, their strange little routine had stuck: Kanata would let her use him as a practice dummy during her daily training, and in return, she’d feed him.

Her “training” wasn’t just kendo either. Some days it was aikidō, other days naginata [T/N: a traditional Japanese polearm], and sometimes even basketball or futsal. Kanata hadn’t known it back then, but Kitahara Sayaka had been famous since their first year as the all-purpose pinch hitter for half the school’s sports clubs. And when he’d later overheard someone call her the “Valkyrie of Mizuhara” [T/N: 瑞校のワルキューレ — her nickname at school, combining her grace and her ferocity], it had just… made sense.

Even so, their relationship stayed strictly confined to lunch breaks. When they passed each other in the hallway between classes, they didn’t even nod. Of course, being a perfectly average teenage boy, Kanata had definitely used her as material a few times—just in his head—but actually getting closer to her? That would take something big. Something dramatic. And he had no idea how to make that happen. So for now, she would stay just that: a beautiful daydream, and a distant, untouchable rooftop goddess.

And then there was the last one—Otonashi Miyako.

 She was his “library girl.”

Honestly, Kanata didn’t even know which class she was in. All he knew was that every so often, when he drifted into the library after school, she was there. They’d barely ever spoken. But somehow, their tastes lined up perfectly. Sometimes he’d see her quietly reading a book he’d finished last week. Sometimes he’d pick up one she’d just put back. Occasionally their eyes would meet, and they’d trade a silent little glance that said things like *”This one’s good, huh?”* and *”Yeah… it’s one of my favorites.”* Or at least, Kanata liked to imagine that’s what it meant.

If he ever wanted to get closer, the first step would be actually talking to her. Just saying “hello.” But somehow, that one word stayed stuck behind his teeth every time, and here they still were—strangers who shared books, but not words. He figured it would be a long road.

So yeah. That was his world. Morning was Maya. Lunchtime was Sayaka. After school was Miyako. Three girls, all orbiting his life like distant little stars he could only admire from afar. And every time he thought about actually moving, actually doing something, the fear of shattering those fragile little connections would lock him in place. All he could do was sit there and daydream.

”Haaah… if only something just went *boom* and blew this whole situation apart already…”

 ”Eh? Did you say something?”

Kanata jumped. Maya was looking at him, her English textbook still open on her desk, her soft brown eyes curious.

”Ah, no… uh…” He panicked, gaze skittering away like a bug on glass. He hadn’t expected her to actually hear him.

And then he saw it—just past Maya’s shoulder, near the back of the room. A girl with bright gold hair, sunlight catching in it like fire.

 (*Is that… the transfer student?*)

Perfect. A change of subject. Something safe. He opened his mouth to ask Maya about her—

—and the classroom exploded in light.

A deafening crack ripped through the air. White swallowed everything.

 And then, nothing.
