Chapter 2 System Tutorial – Failure

”I’m home.”
We headed straight back, skipping the mana stone exchange. Our place wasn’t just a room or an inn rental, but a real house—rare around here. Two stories up, one down. A small yard. Multiple kitchens and living spaces. Enough rooms to spare, and even a storefront built in. By this world’s standards, it was big.
”Hand over your gear. I’ll do maintenance. Go wash up in the meantime.”
”…Okay.”
Her voice was small, her shoulders heavy. She still hadn’t shaken off what happened in the dungeon. That weight wasn’t all hers to bear—it was my words that had driven the nail deeper. Anything more right now would only rub salt in, so I swallowed back what I wanted to say.
Piece by piece, she shed her equipment—jacket, boots, gloves—tossing them to me with a sluggish rhythm. Each item was my handiwork, far beyond what she could have ever afforded herself. Finally, she unbuckled the Mana Gun from her back and passed it to me with unusual care.
*Lonisera.*
An Arcane Gun, crafted to burn mana into bullets. Most guns of its kind were rare; hers was closer to unique, a weapon that answered only to her. Ordinary magic required talent in more than just mana reserves—stats she didn’t have. The gun was her bridge, her only way to fight on par with spellcasters.
And in her hands, it was lethal. Critical shots straight to the head, bypassing all the resistance in the world. Even dungeon bosses weren’t safe if their defenses were low. *Lonisera* was stronger still, forged with mithril and a High Demonkin’s soul core—materials we couldn’t hope to gather again any time soon. Its growth potential was enormous, but maintenance was critical.
I broke the gun down, piece by piece. The trigger had loosened, mana channels warped by heat, traces of crystallized mana clinging to the inside. Left alone, it could fail in the middle of battle.
From deeper inside the house came the faint sound of running water. She’d gone to bathe without a word.
”…She’s really taking this hard.”
Whether it was guilt for the dungeon mistake or for dragging down my ore run, I couldn’t tell. Maybe both. Either way, I’d need to find some way to lift her spirits.
For now, I set my tools to *Lonisera*, stripping it down for a full repair.
