Chapter 181 Interlude – I’m Not Convinced

A few hours earlier—
”Heh heh heh! Thanks for your business as always, Lord!!”
Ayumu had just wrapped up placing an order at the broom shop—yes, the same shop that had long since memorized his face thanks to the countless brooms Sasami had broken—and was about to head home through the bustling streets of Keldan when, of all people, he bumped into Sasami herself. She was out with her friend KukKuk, and—because the universe clearly hated him—Cocoa had tagged along on her own too.
”Good for you, huh, Sasami…?” he muttered bitterly under his breath, but he barely had time to complain before—
”Lord! You showed up at the perfect time!!”
”You showed up at the perfect time, desu♪”
—and just like that, all three of their shopping bags were dumped onto him.
A lord being used as a pack mule… it was unprecedented. Absolutely unprecedented!!
(Ehhhhhh?!! Why meeeee?!!)
Their sheer nerve was honestly shocking. Like, come on—by rank he was basically on the same level as a regional governor! A top-ranking official in this country!! A high noble, for crying out loud!!
And to top it off, they started pointing at things left and right—”Lord!! Please buy that for me, desu!!” “I want this one too, desuu!!”—until he somehow found himself paying for their juice and snacks and every other little treat that caught their eyes.
Even he had his limits. “Look… I mean, I guess I don’t mind paying for KukKuk’s stuff, but… can’t you girls buy that kind of thing with your own pay?” he grumbled. But they just puffed up their cheeks and shot back, “What? No way! But! Lord is super rich, desu!!” “Super rich, desuu!! Don’t be stingy with usss, desuu—!”
And just like that, as if it were some kind of rightful expense, they made him burn through his personal fortune.
(I mean… whatever… but seriously, this just doesn’t sit right with me…)
At the very least, KukKuk had turned to him with that bright little smile and chirped, “Yay! Thank you, Lord!!” in such a genuinely happy voice that he couldn’t bring himself to be mad anymore.
…Still, as they all skipped off ahead of him with their arms full of snacks and shiny little bags, Ayumu trudged behind like some kind of overburdened mule, and he just couldn’t shake the nagging thought that none of this sat right with him at all.
