Chapter 193 Sergei, Commander of the Royal Knights

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Ayumu was burning through the viscounts’ estates—back at the Grand Palace, the emperor’s throne room was in chaos.

”W-Why?! Why is this happening?! What could have possibly displeased you so much, Sanai?!” Emperor Rai’s anguished cries tore through the throne room as he flailed at the news that Ayumu had mobilized troops without permission.

His ministers’ reports clarified that the army wasn’t directed against him, offering a sliver of relief, yet Rai couldn’t fathom that Ayumu—always loyal and composed—could be so incensed.

Reports kept arriving: movements of the Keldan Domain Army that defied conventional military norms of this world. Normally, a Domain Army, raised by a lord, exists purely for territorial defense, with no capacity for invasion. Exceptions like Duke Ralka’s offensive units or Duke Merizaev’s border armies aside, such an independent and preemptive strike was nearly unprecedented.

What shocked the most was Ayumu’s use of coordinated, split-unit assaults. In any ordinary army here, dividing forces like that would create chaos, making simultaneous attacks impossible—but Ayumu’s troops executed it flawlessly.

The Keldan Domain Army split into separate units, invaded multiple targets simultaneously, and even carried out the torching of the viscounts’ estates all at the same time. This was possible because Ayumu had delegated partial command to his officers, allowing each unit to maneuver and fight autonomously, while a network of wireless communication carriages enabled him to maintain oversight and coordination.

Even assuming his subordinates’ skill, the simultaneous invasion and attacks on different objectives at the exact same time—using unconventional wireless communication—were feats beyond any ordinary army.

The Yugan military was astounded. Yet punishing Ayumu or disbanding the Keldan Domain Army wasn’t feasible. Keldan now drove the economy and topped contributions to the crown, and Ayumu was possibly the only person who could fully heal Crown Prince Aare.

Furthermore, the recent interference in Keldan’s trade routes had already triggered concerns among the higher-ups. Ayumu’s decisive actions, replacing the indecisive Emperor Rai, were a direct response. And the risk of similar issues arising elsewhere remained.

Even those who assumed Ayumu would eventually smooth things over knew punishing him now would spread rumors, invite ridicule from foreign powers, and damage domestic credibility.

Emperor Rai fretted helplessly, consulting senior bureaucrats and military officers. “What… what should we do, Sanai?!” he wailed, the source of the problem himself absent. His ministers could only sweat and force a nervous smile.

At that moment, a whisper from the deputy head of the Royal Knights reached him: “Your Majesty, Commander Sergei of the Royal Knights has returned from the Northern District inspection.”

Rai’s expression brightened instantly. Sergei, a loyal servant of the crown since his grandfather’s generation, was the emperor’s most trusted subordinate. Soon, the elderly knight himself entered. Towering even by Yugan standards, his prime long past, yet his presence radiated authority, his hawk-like gaze marking him as no ordinary man.

He had protected this nation since the empire’s days, now holding the powers of Minister of Defense in the Yugan Free Cities League and overseeing internal security with absolute authority.

Rai sighed in relief. “Ah… Sergei. Truly, you’ve returned at the perfect time.”

Sergei, already aware of the situation, bowed slightly. “Leave it to me, Your Majesty.”

And with that, he simply stated his intent.

You declined to help and ignored his plea; what did you expect to happen? People can only take so much before they snap.
