Later—
”…So—your actions this time, they were not contrary to the Emperor’s will?”
Confined to his own manor, Ayumu answered the inquiries of the officials from the Security Department with complete sincerity.
”Yes. All of my actions were guided solely by my understanding of Your Majesty’s intent… therefore, I do not believe they constituted hostile acts against Yugan. Of course, if one says I misjudged the Emperor’s wishes, then that is another matter…”
”Surely you did not think that Your Majesty would consider physically eliminating the Minor Nobles’ League—a persistent hindrance—as an option? No loyal officer of the Security Department would presume such a thought on the part of His Majesty… correct?”
Naturally, timid Ayumu maintained a nervous, jittery posture throughout, silently thinking, You’re not going to punish me for acting with Emperor Rai’s intent in mind, are you? Punishing me would be ignoring His Majesty’s will! I did this for Yugan!!! His anxiety radiated smallness, even as he implied these thoughts to his interrogators.
He continued to fervently plead his innocence, delivering an articulate self-defense.
”They were indeed fellow lords of our nation, yet simultaneously, they were adversaries eroding Yugan like malignant cells. Minor matters before major ones… Yugan is a mighty nation that can shrug off pebbles, but isn’t it our duty, as lords and loyal subjects, to remove even the small obstacles that might threaten the state?”
Yet Ayumu’s reasoned, logical rhetoric, coupled with his unconscious but subtly insistent method of seeking repeated, gentle agreement, gradually began to sway them.
Of course—the fact that the Domain Army had limited itself to seizing only the minor lords’ property while leaving healing potions behind, resulting in minimal casualties, also worked in his favor.
By the end, the officials found themselves reconsidering the root cause of the incident—perhaps the minor lords themselves, or even their own negligence in their duties—and they were left thoroughly impressed by Ayumu.
Later, a report from the Security Department reached Ayumu, stating that “The Honorary Count does not appear to be a dangerous individual warranting concern…” Along with this, he received an official notice granting him permission to move about freely, despite still being under a form of house confinement.
