I was walking along the town street with other travelers and a trading caravan, all of us moving on foot. As dusk approached, everyone began eating their evening meals while listening to tales of wandering knights who traveled without masters.
”I keep thinking… what truly defines a knight?”
”Is it courage? Or perhaps manners? The compassion and faith the church teaches us?”
”Or maybe that elusive nobility, the pure-hearted ideal we read about in knightly legends?”
Wrapped in my sleeping bag beneath the tent, we rested for a moment—but suddenly, a shout rang out: “Attack!!!” Bandits had appeared!
Naturally, I froze, heart racing, ready to run as usual…
“Yesss!!! A walking treasure chest is here!!!”
No—this time, I was fired up! Usually, outnumbered, I’d flee, but now we had fellow travelers, pilgrims, wandering knights, and caravan guards. If we could take them down one by one, it was time to fight boldly. Small-minded of me, perhaps—but confidence was contagious.
And the foes? Bandits.
“Hyah-haaa!!! Die, you fools!!!”
Screaming my battle cry, I found myself taking advantage of the chaos, sneaking behind others to seize spoils from fallen enemies. Morality be damned—pilgrimage or not, opportunity called.
“Oh? A pouch… tsk. Worthless. Won’t even cover drinks…”
I recalled how merchants along the road had sold goods at exorbitant prices—30 gold coins worth now cost 120, 120 became 360, and 200 became 560. Customs, transport, and guard fees explained the markup, but it was outrageous. Likely extortion.
And yes, in this haze, it was hard to distinguish hero from thief. But I’m no heroic protagonist from manga or anime, and I never intended to be. Weak, unlucky, overlooked—I fight in my own way.
“Fuhaha!! Feel the power of numbers!!! [Striking from behind while other travelers engage the bandits!]”
Cowardly or cunning, I continued my journey, ambushing bandits from their blind spots, thrilling and terrifying all who crossed my path…
