Chapter 125 Toward the Future
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Ichika asked to handle breakfast, so I left it to her. I only called out a few medium and small Tatara to help if she needed them, then sat on the sofa beside Ethelena.
Cipher had come home in the night, but because Ethelena and I were in the middle of some close time, she had gone back to her perch. There was nothing urgent today, so after we fixed the leak in that fool’s house, we planned to go out for a little exploration.
Outside in the yard, Yohira was doing her usual dance training, but today she hummed a tune while she moved. Oh right, she learned “singing” in yesterday’s exploration. If so, it was smart to train while singing.
”Tatara, are you lost in Torakuma’s song?” Ethelena asked, watching me. It seemed she did not like how much I focused on Yohira’s voice.
”Yeah, I just thought Yohira’s voice is still very pretty,” I said. “Same for you, Ethelena. For some reason, voices I like gather around me.”
I liked Ethelena’s slightly husky voice, and also Yohira’s high, clear one. I liked Tatia’s strong and steady tone, and Ichika’s soft whisper-like voice. Even the city mayor’s voice had care behind its cool touch, and Calmys-san sounded both young and as safe as a great tree. Sister Kareha’s voice held the power to wrap up everything, while my mother-in-law spoke with a deep, strange charm.
Even the acting head of the family had a low, noble voice that felt very reliable. And that jerk, too—I had to admit he had a clear, good voice. Master had a calm low voice full of pride, the kind I wished to have in the future.
”So… that’s how I hear them,” I finished.
”I wonder how many sweet voices you listen to,” Ethelena said with narrow eyes.
”That’s not fair. Yes, I hear them, but… I hear your voice the most.”
”Of course, I’m your wife, ssu. I’ll talk and talk until your head is full of me, ssu.”
”It’s already almost full,” I said with a sigh. To be honest, I had heard her voice only a few hours ago too.
”Master, please excuse me on your knee-degozaru,” Ichika said.
She finished breakfast and, after saying one line, rested her head on my knee. It had become a daily thing, and her weight there felt nice. I began to stroke her head and enjoy her smooth hair.
Soon her light breathing showed she was asleep. She woke up so early each day, and I was thankful. Still, she could sleep a bit more. But if I told her, she would say she liked getting up early.
”Good morning, Tatara and Ethelena. Ichika is… sleeping well, noja,” Yohira said.
”Morning, Yohira. Your song was lovely,” I said.
”Morning, Torakuma,” she said.
She seemed unsure how to react to praise.
”My mother sings better than me, noja,” she said.
”I told you during the dance too…” I began.
”Stop. When I hear your plain true words, something stirs in my belly, noja!” she cried.
”Is that getting worse, Torakuma?” I asked.
Was this a flag for Yohira to change from a box-pushing demon into a pregnant demon…?
”Goo’ mornin’, mashter,” Dahlia mumbled.
”Hey, Dahlia, don’t greet me with two yawns in a row,” I said. She looked sleepy, maybe from dreaming about magic devices all night, but she was up earlier than usual. Why?
”Today I got a divine oracle from the Machine God to wake up early and hear my master’s problem,” she said.
”I see,” I said.
So the Machine God wanted Dahlia to help me. It was a safe way, but asking for help because our lives were on the line felt a bit unfair.
Ichika had made omelette for breakfast, but not the common one from this land. She wrapped chicken soboro in a thin egg sheet, like the omelette I often saw in my past life.
”It’s a meat omelette, but rare here,” I said.
”It is from our home, called soboro, cooked with food from here-degozaru. I chopped onions and carrots and fried them with soy sauce and mirin (sweet wine)-degozaru,” Ichika said.
In Whirlwind, the common meat omelette had bolognese inside the egg. I cut into Ichika’s omelette. The outside was firm, and the inside was packed. When I sliced it, soft yolk flowed out. I picked up a piece; the firm egg held the soboro well, so it was easy to move. I set it on rice once, then brought it to my mouth.
The outside was firm, but inside the half-cooked egg was soft and sweet. Then the soboro spoke with its taste—the chicken fat, the sweet onion and carrot. A little white rice with it helped balance the soy sauce so it did not feel too strong.
After I swallowed the growing taste, I took a sip of miso (bean paste) soup. At once, the rich soybean and bonito stock filled my mouth, followed by heat.
”Ouch!”
”Tatara, you have a cat tongue, so be careful,” Ethelena said.
”Master, when you show such child-like sides, it makes me stir inside-degozaru, so please be careful,” Ichika said.
Stir where, Ichika? I had no idea.
I chose to ignore it and kept eating. My mouth still burned a bit, so I took some salad with more water in it. It had lettuce, sliced onion, and potato salad—quite a lot of work for morning. I had once shown her how to make mayonnaise when she asked, so she must have learned then. I wrapped a little onion and potato salad in lettuce. First came the water of the lettuce and the soft onion with the sharp taste washed away, then the rich mayonnaise. Her mayonnaise was thicker than mine and matched the potato salad well. The potatoes were mashed with care, so it felt smooth. Maybe there was cream cheese, because it was very rich.
After we enjoyed breakfast, I left the cleaning to Cornrem and the medium and small Tatara, then we all sat at the table.
”We stayed seated because Ethelena said so, noja. What happened?” Yohira asked.
I wanted to wait for Tatia before I explained. I did not want to tell the same story again and again.
”It’s… well, something about me,” I said.
Hearing my weak answer, Ethelena puffed her cheeks. I would explain soon, so please don’t be mad.
When Yohira looked at me and Ethelena, her face grew tense, as if she guessed something.
”So Ethelena knew first, and because she knew, she told you to speak with us… is that right, noja?” she asked.
”…You’re correct,” I said.
”So if Ethelena had not known, you planned to keep silent from us? That is not good, Tatara, noja.”
Her words hurt. I only wanted to stay quiet to avoid making them worry, but this was the result. I really was no good.
”Master… is this about last night?” Dahlia asked. She had listened to everything, and now that her head was awake, her words were clear.
”Last night?” Yohira asked.
”Tatara, what do you mean?” Ethelena asked.
Their doubt fell into the air. I felt caught. I had told Dahlia to keep quiet before, but if she judged something serious about me had happened, she would break that promise. And she had no other idea of any higher being linked to me.
At this point, I could not hide it. In this world, almost no one knew about the poster girl unless they had met her. Like with Dahlia, at first sight she only looked like someone of the Angel race.
”…Fine. Since before I lost my father and mother, there has been someone who looks like an Angel who stayed with me,” I said.
I started to speak honestly. I had hoped to wait for Tatia, but I had no choice.
”I don’t know if she really is an Angel. Only I can understand her words. I learned that when Dahlia saw her. She is a very strange person.”
”…Dahlia, truly?” Ethelena asked.
”Yes. She looked like an Angel of the race. But if someone said she was a god, I would believe it,” Dahlia said.
Dahlia’s first meeting was with an Archangel. That sister was very strong, so the memory stayed deeply with her.
”…What kind of person is she?” Ethelena asked.
”She’s bright, kind, and loves to care for others. She knows a lot about the world. I even asked her about your body before,” I said.
”If so, she is the one who told you that you may be sent away from this world, noja?” Yohira asked.
”Yes, the same person,” I said.
”Why does she know so much, noja?”
”Maybe she only looks like an Angel, but her true side is like a god, part of the world’s rules,” I said.
She felt very human for a world-rule being, but I liked that about her.
”Shall we wait for Tatia to come before I go on?” I asked.
”Yes. If we do not listen all together, it will take twice as long, noja,” Yohira said.
I told them I would finish everything when Tatia arrived, and they agreed. After about ten minutes, the bell rang. When I went to the entrance, Tatia stood there with the fool and that jerk.
”Morning… Tatia is fine, but you two are early,” I said.
”Good morning, Tatara-dono. We met outside a moment ago,” Tatia said.
”Yo, Tatara. The city festival prep starts today. I wanted as much time as I can get,” the fool said.
”Morning! I came early hoping to catch breakfast♪” the jerk said.
”I should tell the last one to go home,” I said.
Their three reasons gave me a small headache. Still, Ichika had prepared omelet rice onigiri just in case for the jerk. He usually ate at home, but he said he had a feeling today.
”…So, why are you this early?” I asked in a low voice only he could hear.
”The reason this town feels tense? Someone inside the local office has been reached. Maybe only a small part, but still,” he whispered.
”…Seriously?” I said.
He seemed surprised I believed him.
”You don’t think I’m lying?” he asked.
”If you lie, you talk more and try to tease. With this tone, it’s true,” I said.
”Heh… so what will you do?” he asked.
”I’ll send a letter straight to the top person,” I said.
”They might be rotten too,” he said.
”If so, they would use me better already,” I said.
He laughed, amused. My reaction entertained him.
”Fine. I’ll listen to you once,” he said.
”…Why the sudden change?” I asked.
”Your answer was fun. If it was boring, I wouldn’t say this,” he said, grinning. His eyes, cold and judging, told me his true nature. He really was dangerous.
”Then don’t betray our side,” I said.
”…That’s your request?”
”What I fear most is you joining the enemy only for fun. Dahlia beats you in raw power, but in skill and tricks, you’re above her. It’s safer to stop that chance now,” I said.
He laughed from deep inside. Yes, he was not someone to relax around.
”Alright. I will keep that promise,” he said.
”I’m counting on you,” I said.
”Heh… you value me that much?” he asked.
”When you cut that bird-thing in two, anyone would understand,” I said.
”I see… If you were a bit stronger, I might have followed you,” he said.
With that, he left for the kitchen to get his food. The fool had already joined Hinagiku-san in the yard.
I sat Tatia at the table so we could begin.
”Tatia, I’m sorry, but I need you to hear my problem,” I said.
”I see. It must be serious,” she said. She saw my face and the others’ and became serious too.
”It came yesterday, but to say it simply… if nothing changes, I will die in a few months,” I said.
The moment I said only the conclusion, Ichika vanished from her seat and pushed me down.
”Tatara-sama, why!?” she cried.
”Calm down, Ichika! I’ll explain!” I said.
Her polite tone broke, and her usual one came out. Tears fell on my face. Yes, I had said it badly.
”Tatara, you said before you may be sent away from this world, noja?” Yohira asked.
”Yes, that chance is still there,” I said.
”So many heavy problems at once, noja…” she sighed, holding her head.
I held Ichika to calm her and sat again. She would not return to her seat and clung to me, so I let her stay.
”As for why I will die… it comes from something I crafted,” I said.
”Did it make poison?” Tatia asked.
”No. I made something that should not exist in this world. I broke the rules, and my soul passed what my body can hold,” I said.
The others seemed to accept it. Had I really been that reckless?
”So the people Dahlia spoke of told you this?” Ethelena asked.
”They told me when Dahlia wasn’t there,” I said.
Dahlia guessed who it was. Her face said, “So it was her.”
”There is a way to avoid it, right, master?” Dahlia asked.
”There is,” I said.
When I answered Dahlia with clear confidence, the air shifted again. I felt Ichika’s ears move where she held on to me, the tip brushing under my chin and making me twitch.
”If I go through an ‘existence ascension’, I can extend my life,” I said.
”By how many years for one ascension, noja?” Yohira asked.
”Ten years.”
”Only that…?” Tatia said with pain in her voice.
”But we are already close to the fiftieth floor, noja. That means your ascension is near too,” Yohira said.
”I didn’t say this before, but my level cap right now is sixty. If we aim to keep me alive, reaching the sixtieth floor is our first target,” I said.
The room grew heavier.
”So you reached the fiftieth floor once already, Tatara,” Ethelena said.
”I didn’t fight that boss, so I didn’t meet the condition. And… I was born with a level cap ten higher than others,” I said.
For Ethelena and the others, this was the first time I spoke about my birth.
”People said it might be because my father and mother beat the fiftieth-floor boss while she was pregnant with me. No one knows for sure,” I said.
The truth was likely linked to my rebirth, but it was easier to offer a reason they could believe.
”If so, should I go with you…?” Ichika asked.
”You can if you don’t push yourself, but I feel calmer if you wait at home,” I said.
Ichika lowered her gaze, staring toward her belly. Please, don’t force yourself.
”And… there is another reason. I want to reach the deepest point of the dungeon,” I said.
”Do not ignore the matter of your death, fool, noja!” Yohira said.
”I was already planning to reach the bottom because of this very reason,” I said.
She frowned.
”One of the sisters of the one who told me this said something else. She said this city may vanish or be blown away someday. We don’t know when,” I said.
Everyone leaned forward at once. If Whirlwind could disappear, no one could stay calm.
”What… what do you mean, noja?”
”I’ll explain step by step,” I said.
I told them what the Chef had once said—that the Archangel was sealing something deep in the last room of the dungeon.
”No one knows what she is sealing there. But as long as I live, she will keep it sealed. That also means after I die… our children, and their children, may be in danger,” I said.
Even I did not know what the Archangel was sealing. If it was like the game, it should not be something even an Archangel had trouble with. And even the poster girl, who was like the world’s rules, could not beat it. It was like something from a past story where a hero killed a god… yet that thing should be gone. And even if it came back, there was no reason for it to be linked to the Cavern of Eternal Night.
”If her sister told me to reach the deepest point, it means I might be able to defeat whatever is there,” I said.
Something even the strongest Archangel could not beat. Or maybe she could not win exactly because she was an Archangel.
”So I will defeat whatever waits at the bottom,” I said.
”…Tatara, do you plan to do that alone?” Ethelena asked.
”Well, yeah. I can’t drag you all into it,” I said.
”You fool. It is already a problem for all of us, noja,” Yohira said, cutting down my words like with a single katana. Everyone around the table wore the same look.
”If we leave this city, we could avoid that future danger,” Tatia said. “But you would not accept that, would you, Tatara-dono?”
”If so, we will add our strength-degozaru. We have plenty of child caretakers-degozaru,” Ichika said, patting Cornrem’s head.
”Master, please do not forget. I accepted this ‘egg’ from you on the condition that I search for happiness. As long as that happiness needs you, I will walk the same path as you. Give the order, master,” Dahlia said.
I closed my eyes once and took a deep breath. I looked at all of them.
”Lend me your strength. For the children’s future,” I said.
They all nodded at once. Their faces made me feel strong.
”…But still, after such a strong speech, the first thing we are doing is fixing a roof leak, noja?” Yohira said.
”We know what to do, but rushing is not right. First, we help with the city festival, and our goal is the sixtieth floor,” I said.
Other than Ichika, we headed to the fool’s home—the Kara house. It was far from my district, in a farm area with fields and an orchard. The land was wide, but the house was over forty years old and clearly aging. No wonder Sunny-chan said it leaked. Buildings in Whirlwind were strong, but like the rainy season in Japan, after twenty years they began to weaken. At least storms were rare.
”We’re here,” I said.
”It is very wide,” Tatia said.
She was right. The land was huge. The orchard and field were each three times the size of the house. A fence surrounded it, and the single house stood in the middle. The roof was faded blue. With a long-distance appraisal, I saw damage in many places. The structure itself had problems—walls and pillars needed work too.
”We should repair some tools as well. Maybe check the magic devices too,” I said.
”That’s so like you, Tatara. A true crafter notices these things,” Ethelena said.
Hearing that warmed me with a bit of pride.
There was no bell outside the fence, so we stepped through the gate and walked to the door. A sweet smell came on the wind.
”It smells nice,” Tatia said.
”And it matches the taste. The vegetables and fruit her parents grow are amazing. They sell for a high brand price,” I said.
”Tatara, you always sound so happy when you talk about him,” Ethelena said with a soft laugh.
He and I grew up together, so I knew his family’s skill best. It was my job to tell others how great they were.
We reached the door and rang. A woman’s voice answered from inside.
”Yes, who is… oh?”
A girl with light brown hair stepped out. It was the second daughter, Nina. She wore simple clothes, calm in color—nothing like her flashy gal style from before. She had been a shy, quiet girl in the past. I liked this softer look more, because it felt like her natural self, but I would never tell her how to dress. That was her choice.
”Morning, Nina. Is it alright if I talk with Albard for a bit?” I asked.
But Nina froze. What happened?
I leaned in, worried. She seemed to reboot, then quickly shut the door. Why?
”Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!?” a huge scream rang from inside.
”What happened, Nina!?” I called.
”What is it, Nina!?” Albard-san shouted from inside at the same time.
Through the door, Nina cried my name as if she would burst into tears. …Wait, I was the reason?
I turned to the others. Their faces said they had a guess. Was this… my fault?
”Master, the problem is not you, but the timing,” Dahlia said calmly.
Bad timing—yeah, that was not something I could control.
The door opened again. Albard-san came out, holding a woodcutting axe, his face like a demon.
”Tatara… could we talk for a moment?” he said.
Yikes. I felt death close by—like during the Undying King fight.
”Uh… good morning,” I said.
”Mm. Morning,” he answered. His tone was normal, but the pressure in his voice was not.
”We came today to grant Sunny’s request,” I said.
”Oh? Sunny’s?”
”Yes. She said the rain leak got bad, so we came to fix it.”
Albard-san touched his chin, thinking, still holding the axe and wearing a demon face.
”To be honest, that would help… but we don’t have much money,” he said.
”No, this is thanks for the idea Sunny gave me. I won big from her advice, so this is payment. I won’t take money. I won’t even let you pay,” I said.
”Tatara, you should not use your skill so lightly. You are a pro, aren’t you?” he said.
”Her idea was worth enough to reach the tens of millions. I could redo the whole house and still call it even,” I said.
”…Really?”
”Really.”
Her idea helped me make a sheath fit to hold a blade that could cut anything. Even the city mayor would accept a full remodel as fair payment.
Also, Albard-san, please stop with the demon face and axe. It is scary.
”So why did Nina scream?” he asked.
”I don’t know…”
”You don’t know?” he said, and the pressure around him grew heavier.
”When she opened the door, I greeted her, she closed it, and then screamed…”
”Do not lie!!” he yelled.
His dark eyes did not laugh, but they were full of doubt.
”Um… may I speak, noja?” Yohira said, stepping in.
Albard turned his wide pupils toward her. Terrifying.
”I believe she screamed because… Tatara saw her while she was not ready, noja,” Yohira said.
”…Not ready?” he repeated.
We all shared the same doubt.
”When a girl likes someone, she wants them to see her at her best,” Yohira said.
”Telling Tatara-dono this is useless, since he praises people for the person they are, not their clothes,” Tatia said.
”In master’s case, he only sees the effort of the person, not the outfit, so it won’t reach him,” Dahlia added.
So Nina screamed because I saw her in a relaxed outfit? And… that meant she liked me? That was how it sounded.
While I tried to process that, Albard-san thought for about a minute, then let out a long sigh and faced me again.
”Sorry. That was a terrible way to greet a guest. Come inside, we can talk there,” he said.
He returned to normal and invited us in. We followed him inside.
In the living room, I explained why we came. Albard-san listened with a troubled face.
”I’m thankful, Tatara, but I feel we must pay. It doesn’t sit right with me otherwise,” he said.
But I could not take money for this.
”Was Sunny’s idea really that big?” he asked.
”It stopped the chance of a mass destruction weapon being released in this city,” I said.
”Yes, that is… much bigger than I expected!” he said.
It led to making a sheath for the ‘Dragon Tongue’ blade of the acting head. If someone stole it from a home, it could have caused a chain of murders.
”So for me, this is fair payment,” I said.
”Hmm… even so, I can’t just say yes. Is there anything else?” he asked.
”Which is better: free repairs, or I remodel it and you live here rent-free?” I asked.
”Why is the scale growing!?” he cried.
The true value of that idea was far higher, even reaching the level of billions if we thought of its concept. It could seal dangerous weapons in the future too.
So I could not hold back with her reward.
”But Tatara… if you do that much, it will scare us. We would shrink back,” he said.
He was an adult, far older than me. Receiving such help from a child would weigh on him.
”If you do that much, the only way to repay you is to marry off my daughters to you or something,” he said.
”That jumped way too far. Please come back,” I said.
His thought flew past the sky. Come back down.
”And if you start work, we would need to leave for a day. That means lodging costs,” he said.
”For repairs, less than an hour. For remodel, two hours,” I said.
”…That makes no sense,” he said.
With golems, we could fix everything at once. We rebuilt houses in two hours after that disaster. We could finish even faster now.
While he was lost in thought, a small figure came into the room.
”Papa~ good morning~”
Sunny, the third daughter, entered while rubbing her eyes. The moment Albard-san saw her, his serious face melted into pure doting-parent mode.
”Good morning, Sunny!” he said, hugging her and rubbing his cheek against hers.
Watching him, I wondered if I would someday become a parent like that. Sunny squealed happily, then noticed us and gave a bright smile.
”Tatara! Morning!”
”Morning, Sunny.”
She escaped her father’s arms and ran to hug me. Albard’s face shifted from despair to a demon mask in one second. Terrifying.
”So, why are you here today?” Sunny asked.
”You said water was dripping from the ceiling before, remember? We came to fix it,” I said.
”Really!?” she grinned.
Her reaction delighted me, but Albard’s face looked complicated.
”Hurry, hurry! Fix it, Tatara!” Sunny said.
I looked at Albard. His face showed resignation. I felt a bit bad, but inside, I smiled. This was the perfect excuse to increase their home’s comfort.
”…Fine, Tatara. I’ll count on you,” he said.
”Yes!” I replied, cheering inwardly.
I stepped away and began. With an appraisal, I saw countless worn spots on the house. I summoned the golems from my inventory.
”What—why are there tiny Tataras!?”
”So cute!!”
Ignoring the comments, the mini Tataras scattered through the house and began working.
”What’s this… Tatara?”
”So many tiny Tataras!?”
”Tatara is small and everywhere!?”
Leaving the siblings’ voices behind, I climbed to the roof. Using only mana stones, I disassembled the roof material with crafting, rebuilt it like new, then applied a mana-stone-based coating that acted as a preservative, water repellent, and self-repair enhancer. It would prevent leaks for at least fifty years.
Reports streamed in from the golems: walls and pillars fixed. Some were captured by the sisters and couldn’t work… I felt their silent pleas, but the job came first. Necessary sacrifice.
After finishing the roof, I inspected the farm magic devices. Over ten years of use had worn them, but the care they received was clear. I disassembled, cleaned, replaced worn gears with fresh metal parts, oiled, and tested them. Perfect. I did the same for tools—hoes, sickles, axes, everything.
”…Feels like the house looks as good as before I married Rachel,” Albard said.
”Dad, Tatara fixed everything so well we don’t need the overhaul we planned for the magic devices,” the eldest said.
”So this is what ‘being Tatarad’ means…” Albard murmured.
I handed over the devices for testing.
”Sorry, can you two check the magic devices for me?”
”Sure.”
”T… Tatara needs to learn moderation…”
The eldest looked like he reached enlightenment. Albard just smiled wryly.
In about thirty minutes, everything was done.
”How is it?” I asked.
”If we complain after this, we’d be shameless,” Albard said.
I had made the house at least ten years younger. He didn’t know how to feel—but at least it was free.
”…But, um… could you free the golems?” Albard asked.
Behind me, the three sisters were holding a mini Tatara each.
”No!” the girls cried in unison.
”Don’t synchronize,” I said.
I sighed. Ethelena’s pupils were dilating—this needed a peaceful solution.
”Girls, Tatara looks troubled, doesn’t he?” Albard tried.
”We don’t like you when you say that, Papa!”
”Papa, nooo!”
Rejected by his daughters, Albard collapsed like ash.
Solution… Right. I’d make special golems for them.
I pulled out multiple mithril pieces and used Golem Crafting. I made a mid-size Tatara golem—wearing a straw hat and overalls like a farmer. Its core was an egg. I activated it, then made five mini versions using magic condenser cores.
”Here. You can have these, so let go of those ones,” I said.
The new golems stared at me with fear. Sorry. Sacrifice yourselves.
The three sisters looked at their new ‘Farmer Tataras’—or maybe ‘Farlems’.
”A… farmer Tatara…”
”At this point, it might be legal, Tatara…”
”So cute!!”
Anna and Nina held their noses for some reason, while Sunny hugged the mid-size Farlem. It hugged back with a resigned aura.
The rescued mini Tataras dashed into my inventory. They must have hated it.
”For now—’help these people’, okay?” I ordered.
”Ta!” the Farlems replied.
”They talked!?” the family shouted.
I hoped they wouldn’t push the golems too hard.
