Volume 1 Chapter 13 The Peerless Beauty’s Hairy Problem

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The mornings for Rindou Hibiki always started a little early now.

She’d set her alarm ahead of her actual wake-up time, roll around in bed for a minute, and then surge out, shaking off the sleep. After showering and having a quick breakfast with her family, she’d gaze longingly at her reflection, admiring the stunning body Hirose had gifted her.. Drying her hair, slathering on a richly scented body cream, and applying her now minimal makeup took only a few blissful minutes. A bit of hair oil to tame her tresses, a final, confident check of her uniform in the mirror, and she was good to go.

”Ugh. I’m totes adorable again today! I gotta get Hirose to call me cute, too!” she declared to her reflection. As her words betrayed, the once-cautious Hibiki had gotten much more demanding since becoming his girlfriend.

Hibiki knew her own nature: she wouldn’t make him miserable. But since Hirose seemed to actually enjoy her bossiness, she didn’t hold back one bit. She liked being the one who called the shots, and he was the type who liked being led. A perfect match, really.

 ”I’m heading out!”

Hibiki practically bounced out of the house.

* * *

Once she got to school, she went straight for her classroom.

”Hiro—whoa, steady there. That was close.”

Her beloved was right by the window—the guy she felt herself falling for more and more with every glance she stole of him. Seeing Takanashi Hirose so suddenly, she almost blurted out his name right there in the hallway. But right now, to the class, they were just two students who barely spoke.

”Ugh, I wanna say his name so bad, you know?” she groaned, massaging her forehead.

”What’s up? Your smooth, glossy skin is going to get all wrinkly,” Motoya Himari chirped, nudging her.

”You’ve got crazy eyes, girl,” Ihara Kairi observed dryly.

”Uh… nothing, really. I’m fine!” Hibiki assured them, forcing a bright smile.

”Hmph. Well, today’s the day we finally get you to spill about that guy you’re crushing on!” Himari pressed.

”Or maybe the one you’re already dating… hmm?” Kairi teased with a knowing smirk.

”Hey, quit it in the classroom! Everyone’s gonna hear!” she protested, lightly batting their hands away.

They both giggled, poking Hibiki’s shoulder. She still hadn’t told her two best friends about Hirose, but she was honestly reaching her limit on keeping the secret.

”I’m just gonna run to the restroom real quick,” she mumbled.

 ”She ran away.”

 ”Yeah, she totally bolted.”

”I did not!” she insisted, though she totally did. Still, she really did need the restroom.

Stepping out of the room, she sighed, “Ugh, those two.”

(Does he still want to keep our relationship a secret from everyone, even our closest friends?) she wondered. They were just vaguely dating before. But now she was his girlfriend, for real! Surely she could tell her two best friends…

”I guess I’ll check in with Hirose about it first,” she decided, gazing down at the floor as she shuffled toward the bathroom.

 Then, she froze.

 ”Huh?”

A girl, perfectly poised, strode gracefully past Hibiki. She was tall and slender with striking blue hair that fell to her waist, held back by a simple clip. Her model-like physique and soft demeanor gave her an overwhelming aura that naturally drew the eye.

 ”Hidou Kirino…” Hibiki whispered.

Kirino was famous throughout the school, the undisputed top beauty in their grade. She had shot down all the senior boys who tried to recruit her for clubs when she first enrolled, and every handsome guy who confessed to her was brutally rejected. Even with the beauty Hirose’s skill had given Hibiki, she knew she couldn’t beat Kirino’s stunning looks… well, except maybe in the chest department.

”Excuse me… are you looking for me?” Kirino asked gently.

”Oh!” Hibiki realized she had blurted out the name and Kirino had heard her, now stopping and approaching her.

”A-Ah, sorry. I… I just got lost for a second admiring how beautiful you are, Hidou-san. Haha…” Hibiki awkwardly explained.

”Oh… you mean me? Thank you very much. I don’t often receive such compliments from female classmates, actually.”

”What?! That’s crazy! You’re gorgeous, Hidou-san! I’m totally jealous!” Hibiki retorted brightly. Her comment suggested to Hibiki that Kirino probably wasn’t treated very well by the other girls. Being an overwhelmingly beautiful girl attracted all the guys, and maybe some girls thought, ‘She stole my crush’.

 ”Thank you… and you are…?”

 ”Hibiki! Rindou Hibiki!”

”Rindou-san… you are also incredibly lovely… you possess a different kind of beauty than I do, especially your skin. It’s as smooth as a baby’s,” Kirino observed softly.

”Ehh, you noticed that!? That makes me so happy, being complimented by Hidou-san!”

”Fufu… you’re an interesting person,” Kirino murmured.

When Kirino gave a soft smile, Hibiki couldn’t help but think, She’s too cute! She felt strangely healed just by the sight of it.

”Interesting? I’ll take that as a compliment, too! I’m delighted!”

”Fufufu… if it were someone like Rindou-san, I might even be able to…”

KIING-KOONG-KAANG-KOONG.

Just as Kirino was about to say something, the preliminary bell for homeroom chimed.

”Ah, sorry, Hidou-san! I have to run to the restroom now!”

 ”Of course. Until later, then…”

Hibiki hurried off, then rushed back to the classroom.

* * *

It was lunchtime. Hibiki, carrying her bento box, slipped away to the rooftop to eat with Hirose and Koharu, keeping the meeting a secret from Himari and Kairi.

The rooftop had benches and was surrounded by a tall fence. But eating in the open benches might get them spotted by a classmate, so they settled behind the entrance, in the blind spot.

 ”Oh, there’s Hidou-san.”

They had just started setting up their lunch on the ground when Kirino appeared from the entrance. She walked toward the center, holding a plastic bag from the convenience store, and glanced around uncertainly.

(Is she looking for a place to eat?) Hibiki thought, immediately standing up and rushing over to Kirino.

 ”Hidou-san!”

”Ah… Rindou-san, right?” Kirino was startled by the sudden call but quickly returned a gentle smile upon seeing Hibiki. The soft breeze on the rooftop made her long hair stream out, and the way she held it back with her hand was utterly picturesque.

Hibiki immediately made a bold suggestion.

 ”Let’s eat lunch together!”

”Eh? Are you sure it’s alright? I am—”

”Don’t worry about it! Come on!”

 ”Wha—Rindou-san!”

A bewildered Kirino was taken by the hand and practically dragged along. She was led to the spot where Hirose and Koharu were waiting. Seeing who Hibiki had brought, the two widened their eyes in utter shock.

”It’s Hidou Kirino-san! It’s okay if she eats with us, right?”

”It’s fine, but… Hibiki, did you really drag her here? Is she okay with this?” Hirose muttered, a slight frown crossing his face.

”Hey, Hirose! I don’t like the sound of that!”

”Sorry, sorry. But you are pretty pushy, Hibiki.”

”Um… hello. I’m Hidou Kirino. I’m fine with it, but are you all truly comfortable?” Kirino asked politely. She was surprised there were people where Hibiki led her, but they seemed kind, so she decided to trust Hibiki’s impulse.

”I’m totes fine with it,” Hirose assured her.

”Me too. Come join us, Hidou-san,” Koharu chimed in warmly.

 ”Then, if you’ll excuse me…”

Hibiki briefly considered if it was okay for these three to be seen together, but after their chat that morning, she felt a strange connection with Kirino. Plus, if she didn’t have anyone to eat with, Hibiki absolutely wanted to include her.

”Look at her, guys! It’s Hidou-san! Isn’t she totally gorgeous?”

”Yeah… she is beautiful,” Koharu murmured.

”She’s so pretty I can barely look…” Hirose acknowledged, a bit stunned.

Kirino thanked them. “But I assure you, I don’t do anything special…”

”I know, I know! You’re a natural beauty, right? Don’t worry, though, we won’t get jealous, so relax!” Hibiki quickly assured her. Hibiki had easily seen through Kirino’s worry: compliments might turn to hatred one day. She knew Kirino used to have close friends who no longer spoke to her.

 ”Rindou-san…”

”Hey, while we’re at it, let’s use first names, okay? What do you say, Hidou-san?”

 ”Eh, first names?”

”I’m Hibiki, he’s Hirose, and that’s Koharu. And we’ll call you Kirino!”

 ”Kirino…”

Kirino ate slowly; she had only taken a single bite of her melon pan. Hibiki and the others were already halfway through their bentos. The truth was, Kirino was too nervous to swallow.

 ”Um… that’s a bit fast. My head can’t quite keep up… I apologize.”

”It’s okay! No rush! We’ll wait until we get closer, then.”

 ”Closer… get closer…”

 ”Yeah, closer to—Wait, WHAT?!”

Hibiki, mid-conversation, suddenly screamed, her mouth wide open. The sound startled Hirose and Koharu so badly they dropped their chopsticks onto the ground.

”Hibiki! What the heck!?” Hirose gasped.

”Hibiki-chan, don’t yell all of a sudden!” Koharu added, equally shocked.

As Hirose and Koharu sighed, wondering how they were supposed to eat their lunch now, Hibiki stammered the reason for her outburst.

”O-Okay, listen closely. This is important: Hidou-san is glowing on Hirose.”

Only these three understood the implication.

Kirino was completely bewildered. “Eh, I’m glowing on Hirose-kun?”

 ”That means—”

”—that Hidou-san has a desire for something that Hirose has the power to grant…”

But Hibiki had a big question. Kirino’s skin was already flawless, her figure was model-perfect. ‘Skin Quality Improvement’ and ‘Fat Burning’ both seemed completely unnecessary.

 ”Don’t tell me…”

And then, the answer hit Hibiki.

”—Hirose, did you learn a new skill?”

 Hibiki stared intently at him.

”Haha… you got me, Hibiki,” Hirose admitted with a nod.

 ”So that means…!”

 ”Yeah… this morning, actually.”

 ”W-What did you learn!?”

Hirose’s skill was clearly what Kirino needed most, but Hibiki herself was now intensely curious. It made sense. Hirose’s Gift was ‘Beauty’. Anything he learned would be a welcome addition to a girl’s arsenal.

”—’Hair Removal.’” Hirose stated the skill name simply and concisely.

Hibiki and Koharu were about to cheer, but the first reaction didn’t come from them. It came from Kirino.

 ”NO WAY—!”

She jumped to her feet, unable to mask her shock. Kirino’s lips trembled, and she clenched her hand so tightly the melon pan she was holding was practically crushed.

 ”So that’s…”

Hibiki’s ‘Wish-Seeker’ skill was something she used habitually, almost without thinking, just observing who was drawn to whom. Her intention was always to help someone who needed saving by bringing them to Hirose.

”Oh, I… I’m sorry. I stood up so suddenly,” Kirino immediately apologized for her strange behavior and quickly crouched down again.

The trio exchanged worried looks and then nodded to each other.

”Hidou-san… this might be hard to talk about. But if this is really what’s troubling you… you have to let us help.”

”Eh… yes…” Kirino agreed vaguely, still processing everything. She didn’t yet understand what she was being asked to say or hear.

”—You’re hoping for Hirose’s ‘Hair Removal’ skill, aren’t you?”

 ”—!”

Kirino’s face confirmed it immediately. It was the expression of someone caught red-handed, the secret she kept so diligently suddenly dragged into the light.

When Kirino whispered, “How did you know that…?” Hibiki, after receiving confirmation from the others, began explaining her and Hirose’s Gifts and skills.

”Wait… so if I get that skill used on me, the desire I’m struggling with will be fulfilled?” Kirino asked Hirose hesitantly, now fully understanding.

The three of them nodded, confirming her hope.

”So that’s what Rindou-san meant by it might be hard to talk about…”

”That’s right. We wouldn’t tell anyone else’s problems to a soul. You can trust us on that.”

”Hidou-san, can you look at this?”

Koharu took out her phone, swiped the screen, and showed Kirino a photograph. For someone seeing it for the first time, it might have been horrifying: a picture of Koharu in her underwear, full of scars and birthmarks.

 ”But… look at this one.”

Koharu swiped again. The next photo was of Koharu with a completely clear body, all the blemishes gone.

 ”What!? Is this…?”

”Hirose-kun’s skill healed me and made me this beautiful.”

 ”T-That’s incredible… they’re totally gone…”

”See? It’s not a photo app or anything.”

 ”It’s really gone…”

Koharu rolled up her sleeve, showing Kirino the spot where the scars had been. Her skin was a beautiful, clear pale color.

”Hidou-san, we won’t force you. We just happened to notice. So you don’t have to tell us unless you—”

 ”—Terminal body hair…”

 ”Huh?”

Hibiki was speaking gently, wanting Kirino to take her time, but the response came before she could finish.

 ”I have severe body hair… It’s… it’s a massive problem for me…”

Kirino hid her face in her hands, full of shame.

Knowing Hirose’s skill was ‘Hair Removal’ had made them suspect it, but hearing it from the school’s most beautiful girl was still utterly shocking. They couldn’t believe it.

”Every single day, I have to shave my whole body… every single day… And then, within half a day, it starts to sprout again!”

That was salaryman-level beard-shaving frequency, just on her body. That speed of regrowth meant it was a truly agonizing burden. It completely explained why Hibiki’s skill had reacted so strongly.

”I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! There was one guy I liked in middle school, but I was terrified for him to find out I was so hairy… So I gave up on romance altogether!”

”You’ve been struggling so hard all this time…” Koharu murmured, her voice full of profound empathy.

A guy might not care—or at least not as much as a girl—because girls are constantly pressured to manage their body hair. Koharu, who had similarly given up on romance and summer fashion due to her scars, was the one who could truly understand Kirino’s hidden pain.

”Hidou-san—no… Kirino-chan,” Koharu said gently, using her first name.

 ”Eh…”

”I was just like you. My scars made me hide my skin, and I covered up all the time. But Hirose-kun healed me, and I’m beautiful now.”

Koharu reached out, gently stroking Kirino’s back.

”So—if it’s making you cry like this… let’s fix it! Hibiki-chan and I both trust Hirose-kun’s skill completely!”

Having finally let the secret out, Kirino couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.

A secret she hadn’t told anyone. She had just confessed it to virtual strangers.

But these strangers were the only people who could grant her wish.

And so, Kirino’s answer was clear.

 ”…Yes…!”

She took Koharu’s hand and gripped it tightly, a silent promise made.
