Chapter 38 Aizawa-sensei’s Visit and the Ultimate Summer Sacrifice

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The exam prep camp had concluded, and upon my return, Manami was having her period. Thus, on the day I came back, I discharged inside Manami’s mouth three times, and Manami swallowed every bit.

She had asked me about Kotoha. When I told her I had only greeted the person and had not spoken, Manami had simply said, “That is so like Hirokazu-san.” I could not possibly admit to being kissed.

Yet, when I went to the cram school the following Saturday, Kotoha was waiting for me. She threatened to spread a rumour that she had forcibly kissed me, which left me with no choice but to exchange contact information.

The remainder of the summer holidays was devoted entirely to studying. Occasionally, Miyama-san would come over as well. For both Manami and Miyama-san, the Designated School Recommendation Selection Exam¹ was scheduled for mid-September. If their scores placed them in the top ranks on this examination, they would gain admission to the affiliated university without needing to sit the main entrance exam, making this summer their critical juncture.

Miyama-san had begun to arrive wearing increasingly revealing outfits, and the distance between us felt as though it had rapidly closed.

Whenever she did not understand something, she would immediately move close to me and ask her questions. Sometimes, Miyama-san’s hands or arms would brush against me, and I found myself becoming rather distracted.

It was amidst all this that, with only three days remaining in the summer vacation, Aizawa-sensei came to visit.

Miyama-san was there studying that day, so she seemed a little surprised by Aizawa-sensei’s visit. After I explained that Aizawa-sensei was my former homeroom teacher from second year and had been concerned enough to check on me since I began living alone after losing my parents, Miyama-san seemed to understand.

Aizawa-sensei appeared listless, just as she had when she visited just before the summer holidays began. I recalled that the earlier incident had been caused by her having lost her confidence, but I wondered what the matter was this time. After talking for about thirty minutes, she apologised for disturbing our studies and departed.

That night, feeling a sense of concern, I telephoned Aizawa-sensei, who said she wished to speak with me alone. When I mentioned this to Manami, she agreed without fuss, and so it was decided I would visit Aizawa-sensei’s home on the final day of the summer vacation.

On that final day, before I left the house, Manami inexplicably handed me a sealed packet.

 ”Just in case.”

 ”Eh!”

”Go and comfort Aizawa-sensei. I’m certain her spirit is quite drained.”

”I don’t mind that, but I do not understand the meaning of this.” I held up the packet.

”I am leaving the rest to Hirokazu-san,” Manami said. “Because I believe Hirokazu-san would never make a wrong judgment, you do not have to apologise to me, whatever might happen. But, never, ever disgrace Haruka-sensei.”

Manami insisted upon this before I left the house.

* * *

Hirokazu-san is quite dense and cannot understand a woman’s heart, which is why I gave him such a strong push, but frankly, I feel unsettled. It has not even been a month since we decided to marry, and I have said something that essentially condones infidelity. What am I doing?

Still, I believe Hirokazu-san possesses a power to heal others. That is why, when my parents were going through their divorce, simply being with Hirokazu-san made me feel relieved.

In the second year, Haruka-sensei was the one most involved with Hirokazu-san, so I think she must have felt some of that same mysterious power in him that I did. That is why, when I consider why Haruka-sensei came before the summer and again just the day before yesterday, it begins to seem as though she might be seeking something from Hirokazu-san.

When Hirokazu-san asked me to go with him, I felt it would be better if I did not, and so I refused. The fact that the Designated School Recommendation Selection Exam is only two weeks away became a convenient excuse.

I truly adore Haruka-sensei. Therefore, I do not want to see her face looking so distraught. I believe that Hirokazu-san will surely save her.

If it were possible, I would have preferred that they did not share intimacy.

However, if she were to share intimacy with Hirokazu-san, I would become worried about Haruka-sensei. I have only known Hirokazu-san, but after listening to my classmates, I know he is completely different from other boys his age. If it is only once, that would be acceptable, but what if she becomes unable to leave him? Perhaps I shall simply worry about that when the time comes. No, definitely only once is permitted.

And then, there is one more person: Yuzuki. Though she does not say it aloud, judging by her actions, she is undoubtedly fond of Hirokazu-san. I believe she understands that her love cannot be realised. It is precisely because it is Yuzuki that I feel such pity and pain when I see her. Yet, there is nothing I can do. Six more months until graduation—I wish for her to leave with good memories, but perhaps this is where I must… Hmmm, I am troubled.

 Summary:

Hirokazu is pressured by Kotoha to exchange contact information, while his intense summer studying with Miyama-san brings them physically closer, leading to a visit from a worried Aizawa-sensei, whom he agrees to visit privately on the last day of vacation after Manami gives him a packet and encourages him to comfort the teacher, despite her own internal conflict and worries about him leaving her for the other women.

 —

 Character Insight:

Manami displays immense confidence in her bond with Hirokazu and a surprising altruism toward Aizawa-sensei, but her internal monologue reveals profound conflict, jealousy, and fear of losing him, suggesting a complex emotional maturity far beyond her years, yet still deeply possessive and troubled by his potential to attract others.

 —

 Behind the Scene:

The narrative sets up a major romantic conflict right before the exam period, using the ‘designated school recommendation’ as a convenient, time-sensitive reason for Manami to excuse herself from a situation she secretly fears.

 —

 T/L:

¹ Designated School Recommendation Selection Exam: A special entrance exam for students at an affiliated high school that guarantees admission to the university if they perform well, thus avoiding the more difficult general entrance exams.
