Chapter 220 Those Who Challenge the Evil God
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I climbed onto Leman-chan’s back and rose just above the height of the surrounding buildings, banking toward the site of the explosion. My sister and her companions were already sprinting just ahead of us desuno.
”Ah…!” my sister gasped.
”No… how can this be!?” Belius shouted.
We reached the center of the destruction in moments. Standing there was the Evil God, Lord Blazer- the same creature we had seen yesterday. His appearance remained a nightmare of living armor and monstrous intent. However, today he was flanked by two new figures. Both were encased in slender, form-fitting plate mail.
(Are they his subordinates… or something worse?) I wondered.
Unlike the Evil God, these two were shaped like ordinary humans, and their stature was similar to our own. But the ground told a different story. Several knights of the Beastman Order of Knights were already sprawled across the earth. The surrounding structures had been leveled; these men hadn’t been caught in a random blast, they were a strike team that had been systematically dismantled while trying to make a stand.
”Ugh…”
”Coughing… blood…”
”Wait! They’re still alive!” my sister yelled.
I looked closer; they weren’t dead yet. One of the beastman knights spotted us and forced himself to his feet, his armor rattling with his tremors.
”B-be careful…!” the knight wheezed. “The Evil God’s servants… they are masters of combat…!”
”What the hell happened here!?” Belius asked.
”Those two… we couldn’t even touch them…!” the knight replied.
It seemed even our elites were helpless. Sweat stung my eyes from the tension, but my sister forced a fearless, jagged smile.
”Hoh… so they broke our knights that easily, did they?” she mused.
”Lady Judiette! Are you unharmed?” a voice called out.
Reinforcements finally arrived, panting and desperate. My sister immediately began barking orders.
”You lot are just in the way! Don’t you dare interfere!” she commanded. “Pick up the wounded and pull back immediately!”
”Y-Yes, My Lady! Understood!” the soldiers replied.
Following her lead, the subordinates began carrying the incapacitated knights away. I noticed a strange pattern: not a single man had been killed. What is the meaning of this? I thought.
”Haha… you certainly know how to put on a show, don’t you, Mr. Evil God ze?” Belius sneered.
My sister, Glazheim-dono, and Belius-dono stepped toward the trio without a flicker of fear. Despite the carnage, all three of them looked like they were actually enjoying themselves.
’Ah… it is you. I remember. You were the ones who stood near me yesterday,’ the Evil God said.
”Well, I’m honored the Evil God remembers my face,” Belius said. “So? Who are the two stiffs standing behind you?”
The two servants remained motionless, weapons nowhere to be seen. But after hearing the knight’s report, I knew we couldn’t afford a single lapse in caution.
’I have reclaimed a portion of my original power,’ the Evil God explained calmly. ‘I decided to release the seals on two of my vassals.’
”Heh… I see,” my sister countered. “You figured taking us all on by yourself was a losing game. So you bought yourself twenty-four hours to call for backup.”
I had come to the same conclusion. He hadn’t granted us a day of peace out of mercy; he had been stalling to bolster his own ranks.
’Hmph… Kuhahaha! To think that so soon after my return to this realm, I would encounter such a comedian! Tell me, girl, are you a court jester?’ the Evil God asked.
”…What did you say!?” my sister snarled.
’I know not who you are, but I simply found it a chore to personally slaughter my sacrifices. That is all… kukuku…’
The Evil God’s composure was impenetrable. I couldn’t tell if he was bluffing or if his power was truly that absolute. I hesitated, then signaled Leman-chan to land near the others.
”Lista!? Stay back, it’s too dangerous!” my sister shouted.
”I have business to conclude, then I will leave desuno,” I replied.
”Business…?” Belius muttered.
Once the real fighting started, there would be no more room for questions. I had to confirm my suspicion now.
”Lord Blazer, Evil God of Flames. I have something to ask you desuno,” I said.
’It is the sacrifice’s final night. Very well, what do you wish to know?’ the God answered.
He seemed willing to indulge me. I kept my distance and spoke.
”On your way here, you defeated dozens of my people. Yet, not one of them is dead. Why desuno?”
”What!?” Belius barked.
”Is that true…?” Glazheim-dono asked.
”I’m certain of it. I saw them from above; every injured man being carried away is still breathing desuno,” I said.
It was baffling. If we were meant to be “sacrifices,” wasn’t the point to take our lives?
”Why haven’t you killed anyone? If we are sacrifices, isn’t our death your goal desuno?”
’Is that all you wondered? The answer is simple: I seek souls that have been properly steeped in despair,’ the Evil God replied.
”What does that mean desuno?” I asked.
’There is no pleasure in snuffing out a soul filled with valiant fighting spirit. What I desire is a dark, heavy soul – one that has abandoned all hope and is saturated in terror. A soul that clings to life while being utterly broken… that is a soul worth defiling.’
So that was it. The Evil God was intentionally terrorizing his targets to “marinate” them. He had no interest in souls that weren’t broken by fear.
”You think it’s fun to scare people before you kill them? You sick bastard…!” Belius growled.
’Oh, it is very fun. You enjoy it as well, do you not? To exert overwhelming power, to watch your inferiors beg for mercy, and then to crush them from above. Is that not exactly what you people do to one another?’ the God asked.
I didn’t share his values, but I couldn’t deny the cold logic. The Empire was a meritocracy where the strong took everything. In a way, the Evil God’s words were a dark mirror of our own nation’s soul.
”Don’t screw with me! I would never -” my sister began.
’You have clawed your way to the top of the human heap, have you not? You do exactly as I do; you simply lack the self-awareness to admit it. Especially those two beside you… I can smell the same scent on them,’ the Evil God said, gesturing toward Glazheim-dono and Belius-dono.
Glazheim-dono didn’t react, but Belius-dono let out a jagged, toothy grin.
”Heheh… well, I won’t deny it. Trampling the weak feels pretty damn great ze. But I don’t have the patience for your games. I don’t need my food to be scared before I eat it,” Belius said.
’Fufu… is that so? Now, sacrifices. Is that the end of your little inquiry?’ the God asked.
”One more thing desuno,” I said. “Why did you appear in this specific land desuno?”
The continent was vast. Why manifest in the plains between the Demon Forest and our town? I suspected there was something here – some ancient connection.
’Because I judged this ground to be the most suitable for my manifestation,’ the God replied.
”What does that desuno -“
’That is enough. Now… my sacrifices. Let me hear your voices scream in perfect despair!’ the Evil God roared.
”Lista! Get back!” my sister screamed.
The dialogue was over. I banked Leman-chan away and gained altitude as my sister and her companions drew their weapons.
”Three of them and three of us!” my sister shouted.
”A joke? Why should I deign to face mere offerings? One of my servants is more than enough for the likes of you,’ the God sneered.
One of the servants – a figure named Giri – stepped forward. At the blatant provocation, the veins on my sister’s forehead began to throb.
”Don’t you dare look down on me!” she screamed.
I never doubted my sister’s strength. Among the current Captains of the Beastman Order of Knights, she was one of the few whose power was whispered to be near that of the Eight Swords of Heaven ². With imperial blood and the power of a second-grade Secret Treasure Orb ¹ of the
type, she was a force of nature. She never relied solely on her gifts; she was a master of the blade through sheer discipline.”Guh…! This guy…!” my sister grunted.
Even I could tell she was struggling. Giri was parrying her strikes with his bare hands, moving with a fluid, terrifying speed that defied the weight of his armor. He wasn’t just defending; he was launching precision counterattacks.
”He’s reading Lady Judiette’s movements perfectly…” Glazheim-dono observed.
”Hey, this is looking pretty bad, isn’t it ze?” Belius asked.
”No… not yet,” Glazheim-dono replied.
The Evil God and the other servant remained perfectly still, watching as if they were spectators at a play.
”It seems they have no intention of helping him,” Glazheim-dono said. “Belius, we end this now. We take the servant down together.”
”Heh… you sure? The Princess might be pissed if we steal her prey ze,” Belius joked.
”Neutralizing the wall of fire is the only thing that matters. Let’s go!” Glazheim-dono commanded.
”Fine, fine… here we go!” Belius shouted.
Glazheim-dono saw that the God wouldn’t interfere and moved in with Belius-dono. Belius’s curved blade deflected a fist aimed at my sister, and Glazheim-dono drove his longsword into the split-second opening. The blow landed squarely in the servant’s flank, but Giri simply twisted with impossible grace and retreated.
”What the hell!? What do you think you’re doing!?” my sister barked at her allies.
”Hahaha! You looked like you were having a rough time, Princess. My hand just slipped ze,” Belius laughed.
”You…!”
”The Evil God is the priority. The three of us will crush this servant first,” Glazheim-dono stated firmly.
”Tch… fine!” my sister spat.
The three of them lined up, weapons leveled at the lone servant. The Evil God’s laughter echoed across the rubble.
’Fuhaha… this is marvelous entertainment. I do not mind at all. Giri – continue to face all three of them at once.’
From my vantage point, my sister alone was at a disadvantage – perhaps a 45 to 55 split in Giri’s favor. But at three against one, the scales had finally tipped.
