Chapter 87 Poison and Magic
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Tester Life Day 35: Evening. Sanada Yakumo and his party stood before the massive black gates.
When I opened the copper treasure chest that appeared in front of the gate, there was a single book inside.
”Oh, a magic book,” I said. This was a win.
”Is this… a water-type?” Sayaka asked, tilting her head as she stood next to me.
”The color is too pale for that,” I replied.
The cover was a light blue, almost white, looking nothing like the books for Water Ball or Water Wall. A geometric pattern and a drawing of a thick arrow were depicted on the cover. It was likely an arrow-type spell.
”It is Ice Arrow ¹,” Sheena said.
”Hm? So you knew it, Sheena. I see, an arrow of ice,” I muttered. Since ice magic wasn’t sold in the Shop, this was likely a rare find, just like his Fire Bullet. “In that case, this is for you, Sayaka.”
”For me?” Sayaka asked.
”It’s definitely water-affiliated, and it looks like it has higher lethality than Water Ball,” I explained. Water Ball had tracking, but it only had enough power to make a goblin writhe in pain. If tougher monsters appeared later, it wouldn’t even serve as a distraction. An ice arrow, however, promised speed and penetration. It could be aimed from high positions over long distances. It felt like ‘real’ magic.
”You’re right. Then, please let me learn it,” Sayaka said. She took the book with a serious expression, took a deep breath, and opened it. The book burst into blue flames and vanished. “…I see. It seems to have the effect of freezing whatever it touches.”
”It has an effect like that, too? That makes it incredibly useful,” I said. Even if it hit armor and didn’t penetrate, it could hinder movement. Just hitting near a joint would be enough.
I had her test it out. An ice arrow manifested above Sayaka’s head. The activation speed was about the same as the ball-type spells-not particularly fast. Next, she fired it at the empty chest. The projectile speed was roughly the same as an arrow from a goblin archer. However, because it had mass, the power was higher than my Fire Bullet, and it instantly froze the area upon impact.
The Mana Capacity ² cost was half that of a Physical Reinforcement ³ buff. At E-rank, Sayaka could fire twenty shots. When she doubled the Mana input, two arrows appeared. Triple gave her three. While they didn’t track like Water Ball, she could keep them on standby above her head and fire them one by one.
Compared to my Fire Bullet, the Mana consumption was double and the activation was slower. However, the range and freezing effect made it a potent weapon if she had time to prepare. Sayaka looked thrilled to be more useful, and Sheena offered a silent clap. The party then passed through the black gate and stepped into the 9th Floor.
The 9th Floor was another labyrinth of the same width. The teleportation circle was in its usual place. The only difference was that the torches were spaced further apart, making the halls much darker.
”Let’s scout it out,” I said.
”Yes. Light,” Sayaka replied, illuminating the passage.
”All this just near the entrance?” I muttered. In the light, I saw a discolored section of floor and a black tripwire stretched at shin height. On this floor, the thread had changed to black. In the dark, they would have missed it. “Saizou.”
”Gyai!” Saizou barked. He ran toward the trap, threw a knife at the pressure plate, and sliced the thread. Thwip-clunk! An arrow and a spear shot out from the side walls. Saizou retrieved the arrow. It was coated in a viscous purple liquid.
”Poisoned,” I noted. The spears were coated as well. The number of traps had doubled, and they were all lethal. Now I knew why the chests had been full of detox potions.
”Master,” Sheena said, pointing forward and holding up five fingers.
”Rock! Saizou! We have company! Sayaka, prep two Ice Arrows and standby! Let’s see what they’ve got!” I ordered.
Rock readied his tower shield while Saizou ducked behind him, gripping poisoned daggers. Sayaka manifested two ice bolts. As they moved into the light, a group of goblins appeared. Four were standard grunts, but they carried proper steel swords instead of rusted blades. Then, a fifth appeared-a goblin in a tattered robe, its face hidden. Its mouth was moving in a rhythmic chant.
”It’s a Wizard! Sayaka! Kill it first!” I shouted. I wanted to use Fire Bullet, but the grunts were blocking my line of sight.
”Understood!” Sayaka replied. She fired her readied bolts. Simultaneously, a fireball formed above the goblin wizard. The spells crossed in mid-air. The ice arrows slammed into the wizard’s chest, but his fireball kept coming, arcing toward the gap between Rock and me.
”Tch! Fire Bullet!” I barked. I fired a small spark to intercept the fireball. It exploded in mid-air, raining embers down on the goblins below.
”Vuoohhhhn!” Rock roared, charging into the chaos. He sent goblins flying, skewering them with his short spear. Saizou blurred past him, finishing off the wounded. I felt the hum of experience points being channeled into me. I was basically a conversion device for my summons now, but it worked.
After several more battles, they realized the Wizards appeared in about half the encounters. The fireball spells were a problem-they had area-of-effect damage. If they were ambushed from behind, they’d be forced into a defensive struggle.
”Offense is the best defense,” I muttered. I’d have to rely on Sheena for early detection so Sayaka could snipe the casters before they could finish a chant. The floor was definitely ramping up the difficulty.
* * *
”Watch out, Sayaka!” Sanae screamed, watching the monitor in the facility. She saw the fireball head for her friend and let out a sigh of relief when the guard intercepted it. “That sadistic guard! Putting Sayaka in that kind of danger… I won’t forgive him!”
”Sa-na-e,” Karen teased from the side.
”Is Sanae an idiot?” Leticia asked.
”What are you—” Sanae started, then froze. The instructor was standing over her with a beaming smile.
”Ah… ah…”
”Our little exhibitionist is at it again♪” the instructor cooed.
”No, that’s not it! My friend was in trouble and I… please, forgive me!” Sanae pleaded.
”Not a chance♪ Hehe. I bought a new toy that’s all the rage this morning. A Pink Rotor ⁴. It’s from your world, so I’m sure you know it, right?”
”O-only by name,” Sanae stammered. It was a vibrating toy.
”I wonder what happens if I stick this to your perky little n**ipss… and your clitoris?♪”
”Eek! Please, no! I’ll go crazy!”
”You’ll be fine. You’re the type who enjoys it in the end anyway. Look, you’re already soaking wet and I haven’t even turned it on,” the instructor said.
”I-it’s not true!” Sanae cried, but her body betrayed her.
”Fufufu. ‘This is an order.’ Get naked and spread your legs.”
”Stop! Ah! My body is… moving on its own!” Sanae wailed. Her hands stripped her bare against her will. The Crotch Crest ⁵ on her skin began to pulse with Mana. “No! Don’t put it there! Stop!”
”All done♪ Now, let’s see you go! Switch on!”
”Eh? A-gah! Aaaah! What is this?! I’ve never-I’m c**ming! I’m cuuuuuuuumming!” Sanae shrieked.
”So fast! No wonder Lady Lanora ordered these mass-produced,” the instructor laughed. “I might have to try one myself tonight. Alright everyone, back to work! We’re finishing early today!”
”Ah! Again! I’m c**ming again! Someone stop it! Karen! Leticia!”
”Sanae really never learns, does she?” Karen sighed.
”Maybe she’s doing it on purpose?” Leticia whispered.
”No… it’s… n-ahhh! Don’t just watch, help me! This feels… too good! Someone… ah, no! I’m cummiiiiiing!”

Summary:
Yakumo’s party reaches the 9th floor, acquiring the Ice Arrow spell for Sayaka and encountering lethal poisoned traps. They face a new threat in the form of Goblin Wizards who use area-of-effect fireball magic. Meanwhile, Sanae is punished at the training facility with a ‘Pink Rotor’ device that forces her into a state of continuous arousal.
—
Trivia:
- The Ice Arrow spell has a freezing effect that can hinder movement even if armor isn’t pierced.
- The tripwires on the 9th floor have changed color to black, making them harder to see.
- Mana Capacity costs are relative; Ice Arrow costs half as much as a Physical Reinforcement buff.
- Sanae’s ‘Crotch Crest’ is reactive to Mana and forced orders.
- The Goblin Wizards represent a significant jump in tactical difficulty due to long-range AoE magic
—
Character Insight:
Sayaka is becoming a more lethal combatant, transitioning from support/distraction to a primary damage dealer. Sanae’s submissive tendencies are being exploited by the instructor, showing her body’s traitorous reaction to the training despite her verbal protests.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author uses the dungeon crawl segments to introduce new mechanics that are then mirrored in the ‘training’ facility, such as the use of Mana to stimulate the students’ crests.
