”Are you ready?” Sanada asked.
”Yes, I’m all right now,” Sayaka-san replied.
”I’ve finished putting on my equipment here as well,” Sheena-san added.
Our long lunch break was over, and our Mana Capacity¹ had recovered to nearly full. We pulled our clothes back on, bucking our armor over skin that still felt flushed.

Soloing this would have taken ten times as long, and I’d have burned through half my Grade 4 potions. The traps in this place are demonic – hidden arrows followed by triple-tap Fireballs – I’d have been a pincushion by now if I were alone.
”Then we shall live up to your expectations,” Sheena-san said, her eyes softening. “For our beloved Danna-sama.”
”I’ll do my best to protect you, Goshujin-sama!” Sayaka-san added.
Rock let out a sharp bark, and Saizou gave a low, mechanical-sounding chirp of agreement.
”Kukuku… I’m counting on you all.”
I’d already briefed them on the Goblin King’s abilities during our rest. If I wanted to claim the Twenty Knights for myself, I had to win here. I pushed toward the gate to the Area Guardian’s chamber, my mind already drifting to the woman Sayaka-san described – the icy, man-hating Knight. Tonight, I’d break her. I’d turn that frigid attitude into pure, addictive pleasure.
The gates groaned open with a heavy, metallic shriek. Torches flared to life along the walls, one by one, illuminating a massive stone hall. It was a simple audience chamber, fifty meters square. At the far end, atop a short flight of stairs, sat a throne. Behind it loomed a black gate.
On that throne sat the King. He was a mountain of a goblin, larger even than Rock, encased in full plate armor with a copper crown perched atop his helm.
At the base of the stairs stood his vanguard: two Goblin Wizards, a Hobgoblin in leather armor with a longsword, two armored Goblin Soldiers, and four standard Goblins acting as a screen.
I saw a hood flickering behind the Hobgoblin. A Goblin Assassin.
”Heh. An all-star cast,” I muttered.
Two 6th-floor Guardians, a 7th-floor, and an 8th-floor. It was a Greatest Hits of the dungeon’s previous horrors. The heavy gates slammed shut behind us with a final, echoing thud.
”Saizou.”
I glanced at the door. Saizou checked it and shook his head – locked.
I looked back at the King. He was smirking at me. A no-escape room.
”Kukuku… Interesting. We’ll just have to break through with force, then.”
”Fufu. That savage smile, Danna-sama… you look like a Beastman warrior. It’s wonderful,” Sheena-san whispered.
”Is that so? Guess I couldn’t help it.”
The adrenaline of a life-or-death fight was better than any drug.
”Sayaka-san, once we hit the center, Water Wall in front. Rock-chan handles the flanks and rear. Use Ice Arrows to snipe the Wizards. I’ll take the first volley.”
”Understood! Rock-chan, back me up!” Sayaka-san shouted.
”Saizou-san, hunt that Assassin. Just keep it off Sayaka-san. Sheena-san, wait for my signal. The King probably won’t move yet. If he does, he’s mine. You take the rest.”
”As you wish, Danna-sama. But be careful – they’re all buffed by the King’s presence,” Sheena-san warned.
”I’m going full throttle from the jump.”
I stepped ahead of the group. As we reached the center of the hall, the Wizards cast first.
”Water Wall!” Sayaka-san barked. A shimmering barrier rose as she immediately began chanting her follow-up Ice Arrows.
The King let out a short, guttural bellow.
Two massive fireballs shrieked toward me. Simultaneously, the Hobgoblin and his squad charged.
”Fire Bullet! Fire Bullet!”
I stood my ground, detonating the fireballs mid-air. The explosions were massive – the King’s buff was the real deal.
Four streaks of blue light shot over my shoulders. Sayaka-san’s Ice Arrows found their marks, two burying themselves in each Wizard’s chest.
One threat down.
The charging goblins were blinded by the rain of sparks from my interception. I didn’t give them a second to recover.
”Fireball! Fireball!”
The Hobgoblin barked a command, and the squad scattered, dodging the blasts.
”Fast bastards!” I growled.
”Wind Cutter! Wind Cutter!”
I sent a flurry of invisible vacuum blades low at their legs. At this range, they lost some bite, but three goblins went down as their shins were shredded.
”Fire Bullet! Fire Bullet!”
I pumped double Mana into the next shots. The first blew a hole through a Soldier’s leather plate. The second only grazed the other Soldier’s shoulder as it dove for cover.
Two left: one Soldier, one Hobgoblin. The King still hadn’t budged. He looked bored.
”Sheena-san, go!”
”Yes, Danna-sama!”
Sayaka-san’s arrows finished off the downed goblins. Sheena-san blurred forward, engaging the remaining Soldier and Hobgoblin. To the side, I saw Saizou-san struggling; the Assassin was too fast, landing cuts on his arms and forehead.
A sphere of water suddenly slammed into the Assassin’s back, knocking it out of its high-speed stealth. Sayaka-san’s support was perfect. Saizou-san didn’t miss the window, burying his poisoned dagger deep into the Assassin’s throat.
”Sheena-san, switch!” I yelled.
The Hobgoblin was faster than the ones we’d fought before, but Sheena-san had been playing it smart, using her rapier to prick at its joints. As she backed off, I stepped in with a shield bash.
The Hobgoblin reeled. Sheena-san’s rapier flashed out, severing the tendons behind its knee. I stepped into its guard as it collapsed and swung my Machete in a brutal horizontal arc.
The Hobgoblin’s head spun into the air, a fountain of green gore erupting from the stump.
I looked past the falling corpse, locked eyes with the King on his throne, and grinned.
”Your turn.”
