They stood deep within the Forest of the Greedy Fool, a place where they’d once fled in shame after a disastrous encounter with a monster.
”Yeah, it’s too quiet,” Hidaka agreed, his voice low.
”Lame. So, they’re not here?” Kakei scoffed.
”Kakei, don’t act like you’ve forgotten what happened last time,” Jinno chided.
Four months had passed since their introduction to the citizens of Plaudix. The other classmates had scattered, but here, seven remained: Sugita, Hidaka, Hagimoto, Jinno Yuto, Kakei Seijuro, Tsubaki Yoshino, and their homeroom teacher, Nagase Emi. Nishiyama, the creepy otaku, was notably absent.
”It’s like… a letdown,” Tsubaki said, shrugging.
”Well, it’s better if they’re not here,” Emi added.
”But that means no XP,” Hidaka grumbled.
”True. My skill would be useless then,” Emi admitted.
Tsubaki and Emi exchanged glances, their conversation flowing naturally.
Emi’s unique skill, Hero’s March ¹ (Argonauts), boosted the combat power of those under her command. She’d sat out the last mission, citing strategy and learning as reasons.
Tsubaki’s skill, Gabriel’s Protection ², was a complex mix of water magic, divine magic, and something called Divine Oracle. Apparently, her words carried the weight of a god’s. Very Tsubaki-like. ”In my opinion, the victim is at fault, not the thief,” Sugita said, cutting through the tension. “The weak, the bullied, the cuckolded—they’re all to blame. So, I’m not at fault, and I don’t feel guilty.”
Kakei, on the other hand, held no grudge against Sugita, but his skill, Infinity Guns ⁴, was terrifying. He could create countless guns and fire endlessly. Dodging bullets was impossible. They usually stayed out of each other’s way.
”Why’s the class president here, anyway?” Kakei asked, smirking.
”Kakei, don’t act clueless. To avoid unnecessary casualties. And to help those suffering under the Demon King,” Jinno replied.
”Hah! You ran like a coward, so don’t act noble,” Kakei shot back.
”Hagimoto! That goes for you too!” Jinno snapped.
”Yeah, so what? What’s your excuse, Jinno-kun?” Hagimoto retorted.
Hagimoto, an intellectual with glasses, contrasted sharply with his massive scythe.
”Hagimoto… are you ready to face my judgment?” Jinno asked, his tone icy.
”Huh? Threatening me? Bring it on, then,” Hagimoto challenged.
”Alright, I’ll oblige. Prepare to be judged—”
”Stop it! Jinno-kun, don’t use ‘Judgment’ on allies. Hagimoto-kun, stop provoking him,” Emi intervened.
The tension eased, but only slightly.
”…Understood,” Jinno conceded.
”Whew, thanks, Emi-sensei,” Hagimoto said, smirking.
Sugita sighed. He disliked Jinno, but Hagimoto’s lack of tact was infuriating.
Hagimoto’s skill, Sariel’s Protection ⁵, involved darkness, curse magic, Death’s Proclamation, and Invincibility. The scythe suited him, Sugita supposed.
”What now? Nothing’s showing up. Should we head back?” Hidaka asked.
”Fine. We’ll wait a bit longer, then leave if nothing happens,” Sugita decided.
”Sugita, why are you in charge? That’s my job as class president—” Jinno began.
”Because I’m the highest level here. Are you stupid?” Sugita snapped.
”Grr…”
Jinno glared, but Sugita ignored him, scanning the area. Something felt off—not monsters, just… something.
He realized what it was as they left.
—Right, Yokoo (the fat otaku) summoned that armor-like thing, but its remains are gone.
