Chapter 95 Yuki Chihiro ④

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 School was out for the day.

 Normally, we students would be off celebrating our freedom and enjoying our youth, but today was different. In fact, I had a feeling things were going to be “different” from here on out.

 Nakim and I made our way toward the classroom the Chairwoman had specified. Nakim was practically vibrating with excitement. Apparently, getting a “Special Lecture” from the head of the academy herself was an opportunity most people would kill for.

 ”I mean, seriously! This is a class with the Chairwoman!” Nakim exclaimed. “People would do anything just to sit in on one of her sessions! To think we were actually invited…”

 ”I get it, I get it,” I said. “But you didn’t sleep a wink, did you?”

 I wasn’t exaggerating. Nakim had been so wired with joy that he’d barely closed his eyes. If I hadn’t dragged him out of bed, he’d likely still be dead to the world. Instead, he stood there with heavy dark circles bruising the skin under his eyes.

 I suppose I couldn’t entirely blame him for the enthusiasm, though.

 We reached the designated classroom. I could sense several presences inside; it seemed we weren’t the only ones selected for this special treatment. I slid the door open to find about ten other students. Since I’ve never been much for socializing, the faces and names were mostly a blur of strangers.

 However, one girl caught my eye – a student with striking, long black hair that felt distinct even in this world.

 ”Good morning. So, you were called here too…” I said.

 ”Good morning,” Yamato Hina-san replied. “You as well, I see.”

 Between being in different classes and my own deliberate efforts to avoid her, this was the first time we’d spoken face-to-face since the entrance ceremony.

 Kagaya Haruna-san wasn’t there, which was odd. I would have expected her to be a prime candidate for this. Just as I was wondering about her, the door swung open with a bang.

 ”Mornin’-ssu! …Wait, Yuki-kun?! And the Vice Prez too!”

 ”Oh. Kodama Satomi,” I muttered.

 The self-proclaimed “President of the Chihiro Fan Club.” When we first arrived in this world, she’d dyed her hair a bright blonde, but it had grown out enough that her dark roots were showing – the classic “pudding hair¹” look. Her skin, however, was as tanned as ever.

 ”Yeah, the Chairwoman called me! Said she had a special lesson for me and told me to get my butt over here,” Kodama-san said brightly.

 She was all smiles. The shadow of guilt and reflection she’d carried before had completely vanished, replaced by her natural, bubbly energy. Like the others, she was in a different class, so I rarely saw her. For context: Kagaya-san was in Yamato-san’s class, while Kijima and his crew were in the same class as Kodama-san.

 Still, out of five hundred students, only a dozen or so were in this room. Being hand-picked by the Chairwoman for “Special Lessons” was, statistically speaking, a massive deal.

 As I was pondering the gravity of it, the woman herself sauntered in.

 ”Morning, everyone! Good, you’re all here. I thought we might have a few stragglers, but I’m glad to see I was wrong. Shall we get started?”

 She gave us a pleasant, breezy smile.

 I had to wonder, though – was her outfit a joke? She was wearing glasses (likely fake), a crisp white blouse, and a knee-length black pencil skirt, all while carrying a pointer. She looked exactly like one of those “s*xy teacher” archetypes from an anime. In her case, even though she was an actual educator, it felt like pure cosplay.

 What was weirder was that no one pointed it out. Was this her standard uniform for special lessons? Was everyone just used to this?

* * *

 ”First, let’s cover the basics,” the Chairwoman began. “The difference between Magic² and Sorcery³. Simply put, Magic represents the Laws of the world, while Sorcery is the act of exercising those Laws. You’ve all heard this in your standard classes, so I assume no one is lost yet.”

 I nodded along. Back in Plaudix, they hadn’t bothered with the theory. Their philosophy was basically: If you can kill things with it, it works.

 ”Now, does anyone know who first devised Sorcery?” she asked. “Hmm… Nakim-kun, you take this one. If you get it right, I’ll give you a treat.”

 ”Eh?! Um, uh… was it you, Chairwoman?” Nakim asked tentatively.

 ”I wish! Well, that’s half-right, half-wrong. I’ve certainly come up with a few specific spells, but I’m talking about Sorcery as a whole. Want a hint? It wasn’t one specific person.”

 ”Wait… then… was it God?”

 ”Too bad! Wrong. The answer is: humans. Or ‘hito,’ if you prefer.”

 That caught me off guard. But looking back, she’d given a hint when she mentioned her own contributions. It was a bit of a riddle.

 ”Sorcery was devised by an untold number of humans over time,” the Chairwoman continued. “Which means, if you have the drive, any of you could devise a new form of Sorcery yourselves.”

 A murmur of excitement rippled through the students.

 ”That is why I want you all to learn to construct Sorcery on your own, without relying on grimoires.”

 ”But… how do we even do that?” one student asked.

 ”I think Nakim-kun might have the answer to that. Tell me, Nakim-kun, how did you come up with ‘Dispel’?”

 ”O-Oh! Right! Um… it was just a sort of… a whim? A flash of inspiration?” Nakim replied.

 ”Exactly. A flash. Inspiration. That is the key. No matter how brilliant you are, without that spark of inspiration, you’ll never create anything new.”

 I see. Wait…

 ”Um, can I ask something?” I asked.

 ”Of course! Ask away, Yuki-kun.”

 ”I understand that inspiration is vital, but does that mean the very first person to devise Sorcery just built it from scratch? No hints, no foundation, just… zero to one?”

 ”Excellent question,” the Chairwoman said, her eyes glinting. “Actually, there was a starting point. Though, technically, it wasn’t ‘Sorcery.’ There is a source from which all Sorcery flows – the ‘Primordial Thaumaturgy‘.”

 The room went quiet. I’d never heard that term before. From the whispers of “Have you heard of that?” and “No, never” coming from the other students, it seemed I wasn’t alone. Even Yamato-san and Kodama-san looked stumped. Nakim, obviously, was clueless.

 The Chairwoman continued her explanation.

 ”The ‘Primordial Thaumaturgy’ is… well, how should I put it? It’s essentially the ‘Work of God.’ Obviously, I can’t use it. But I have seen someone use it before. Let’s see… was it two hundred years ago? Ah, no, it happens every hundred years.”

 The “hundred-year” comment struck a chord. If I remembered correctly, the Hero Summoning Ritual also occurred on a hundred-year cycle.

 ”For the record, there are seven ‘Primordial Thaumaturgies’ that I know of,” she said, tapping her pointer.

 * ‘Megiddo’

 * ‘Judgement’

 * ‘The Great Tsunami’

 * ‘Lourdes’ Breath’

 * ‘Keraunos’

 * ‘God Bless’

 * ‘Death Sentence’

 ”…Those seven. Their scale is on a completely different level compared to standard Sorcery. They’re more like miracles, honestly. And every spell we use today was eventually derived from them.”

 Yamato-san and Kodama-san both stiffened for a split second. A thought occurred to me: Could these two be capable of using one of those?

 ”Oh, while we’re on the subject of the Primordial, I should mention one more thing,” the Chairwoman added. “There’s something known as a ‘Forbidden Curse.’ And just to be clear, I don’t mean ‘Forbidden Techniques.’ Those are entirely different.”

 ’Forbidden Techniques’ were exactly what they sounded like: spells that were legally or ethically banned. Usually, it was because their area of effect was too massive, the MP cost was suicidal, or they were designed specifically for mass-slaughtering humans rather than monsters.

 For instance, ‘Earthquake’ could level an entire city and leave thousands of civilians dead. ‘Meteor Fall’ didn’t just wipe out a fortress; it left a two-hundred-meter crater that permanently altered the geography. As for the Light Magic forbidden techniques, the damage was so horrific that their names weren’t even released to the public.

 Because they’re so dangerous, you won’t find them in any textbook. Or at least, that’s what we were taught.

I have a gut feeling I could use them if I really wanted to. Not that I have any intention of trying, or even learning them.

 ”The ‘Forbidden Curses’ are also called the ‘Taboo Thaumaturgies,’” the Chairwoman concluded. “But honestly, there’s no proof they were ever used – or if they even exist. No history book mentions their names or records them being cast. A few eccentric scholars have hinted at them, but it’s mostly considered a myth. The only thing the legends agree on is that their names are based on the Seven Great Sins. But since they’re supposedly impossible for normal people to use, you don’t really need to worry about them.”

 The Chairwoman shrugged, ending her explanation.

Forbidden Curses, huh. Like she said, it didn’t seem to have much to do with us. I pushed the thought into the back of my mind, figuring it was just a bit of trivia.

 At the time, I had no way of knowing that I would eventually come face-to-face with those very Curses.

 ”Well then, any other questions? If not, class dismissed! Oh, and one more thing – Yuki-kun, Hina-san. Please come to my office afterward. There’s something I want to discuss. Everyone else, you’re free to go.”

 As the class ended, the students bowed and filed out.

 I stayed behind, my mind racing. What on earth could she want to talk to us about?

 Summary:

 Chihiro and a select group of students attend a special holiday lecture hosted by the academy’s Chairwoman. She explains the theoretical foundation of magic and reveals the existence of ‘Primordial Thaumaturgy’ and the mythical ‘Forbidden Curses’ linked to the Seven Sins. The chapter ends with Chihiro and Hina being summoned to the Chairwoman’s office for a private discussion.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The connection between the 100-year magic cycle and the Hero Summoning Ritual.

 - Yamato Hina and Kodama Satomi’s visible physical reaction to the mention of Primordial Thaumaturgy.

 - The specific distinction the Chairwoman makes between ‘Forbidden Techniques’ (man-made bans) and ‘Forbidden Curses’ (mythical/taboo sources).

 - Chihiro’s internal admission that he likely has the capacity to use Forbidden Techniques despite the high cost.

 - Kodama Satomi’s hair growth showing her natural color (pudding hair) as a sign of time passing since their arrival

 Character Insight:

 Chihiro continues to show a high level of magical intuition, realizing he can likely cast forbidden-level magic. His avoidance of Hina shows lingering social friction or trauma from their past entrance ceremony. The Chairwoman reveals herself as a playful but deeply knowledgeable figure who is carefully monitoring the ‘cheat’ students.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

 The names of the Primordial spells are derived from various mythologies and religious texts (e.g., Megiddo from Hebrew, Keraunos from Greek), hinting at a multi-cultural source for the world’s ‘God-given’ magic.
