Chapter 142 The Full Scope of the Area Guardian Rewards
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Yakumo Sanada – Day 51 of the Tester Life. 1st Floor Grand Hall.
”Good morning, Sanada-san, and to the ladies as well,” Yuki greeted us.
”Morning, Sanada-san,” Coach Sayama said.
”Good morning, Sanada-dono!” Hida barked.
””Good morning!”” the others chimed in.
”Morning,” I replied. “Yuki, Coach Sayama… Hida and the rest of you. What’s the occasion? Why the crowd today?”
It was the morning after our break. Having effectively rested for a day and a half, we had finished our gear checks to head back to the 11th Floor and were just stepping out of our room. Waiting there wasn’t just Yuki, but Coach Sayama and Wakamiya, the captain of the baseball club. Beside them stood Hida from the karate club, along with a second-year student-Sugawa, I think his name was. They were all lined up as if waiting for an audience.
”Everyone wanted to thank you personally, so we waited together,” Yuki explained.
”I see,” I said.
It seemed Yuki had followed my lead and informed the baseball and karate clubs that the decision to leak the floor intel ¹ came from me. Yuki was a man of his word, almost to a fault. My plan had been to let Yuki take the credit, making his party the “top dogs” and the public face of leadership while I pulled the strings from the shadows-using them as a human shield against the politics. I’d simply forgotten to tell him to keep my name out of it.
Well, what’s done is done. I’ll just have to use Yuki as my firewall to dodge the headaches as they come.
”Thanks to you, Sanada-san, more than half the baseball club cleared the 5th Floor,” Coach Sayama said. “Truly, thank you.”
”I was able to save Yumi because of you,” Wakamiya said, bowing low. “Thank you so much.”
”The karate club cleared it entirely!” Hida shouted.
”I managed to save my girl too,” Sugawa added, bowing his head. “It’s all thanks to you, Sanada-san, and Yuki-senpai, ssu.”
Led by the Coach, the group bowed deeply in gratitude. I caught Sayaka looking pleased beside me, while Sheena wore a look of quiet pride. Karen and Sanae just looked confused; I hadn’t briefed them on the intel leak. Sayaka and Sheena were sharp, though-they’d clearly put the pieces together.
”Don’t worry about it,” I said dismissively. “I only put that info out there for my own protection. The more slave-holders ² there are, the more people will believe that trying to gank someone else’s slave is a waste of effort. It makes the rumor stick. It’s a defensive measure to keep morons like Arashiyama from trying anything again.”
”I understand,” Coach Sayama said. “I heard from Wakamiya that even if the owner dies, the slave doesn’t transfer. I’ll make sure that fact is hammered into the heads of everyone who obtained a girl this time.”
”Please do,” I replied. “It’s for everyone’s safety.”
From the way the Coach spoke, it sounded like quite a few people besides Wakamiya had been successful. Curious, I asked around about the rewards. By pooling their info, I managed to get a clear picture of the 5th Floor Area Guardian’s ³ loot table.

| 5th Group | Bronze Treasure Chest + 4th Rank Slave Exchange Ticket (x1) + 80,000 DP + Magic Pouch |
| 6th-10th Group | Bronze Treasure Chest + 5th Rank Slave Exchange Ticket (x1) + 50,000 DP |
The remaining baseball club parties are scheduled to attempt their runs today.
As for the total “stock” of slaves available in the system:
* 1st Rank (2,000,000 DP):* 15 units
* 2nd Rank (1,500,000 DP):* 30 units
* 3rd Rank (800,000 DP):* 40 units
* 4th Rank (400,000 DP):* 50 units
* 5th Rank (200,000 DP):* 100 units
Total Stock: 235
Subtracting from that: I have three 1st Ranks; Yuki’s sister is a 2nd Rank; Shimada-the leader of Yuki’s second party-got his girlfriend as a 3rd Rank; and Sonoda’s girlfriend is a 4th Rank. Add the rewards from the 4th group onwards in this current wave, and the numbers are dropping fast. Including myself, there are now over ten Testers who are officially slave-holders.
Another interesting detail: if you challenge an Area Guardian with a party of seven or more, the number of minions increases. This didn’t happen with the normal Floor Guardians, but there was a noticeable difference-about two extra monsters-between the 6-man and 7-man parties. Based on the difficulty, it seems Floor Guardians are “Mini-Bosses,” the 5th Floor Area Guardian is a “Mid-Boss,” and the 10th Floor Area Guardian will likely be the first “Major Boss.”
At the very least, I now know that trying to swarm the Area Guardians with sheer numbers is a trap.
”I see. From now on, we should stick to parties of six or fewer,” I noted. “Also, with so many new slave-holders appearing, tell them to be careful. If they flaunt them like I do, they’re liable to get jumped.”
”Flaunting them? Perish the thought,” Wakamiya said. “I finally got her back; there’s no way I’m dragging her into a dungeon.”
”Same here,” Sugawa added. “My girl isn’t like Sheena-san over here who can use a bow-she’s not built for fighting monsters. She’s staying safe.”
”Hmph. Well, I am special, after all,” Sanae said, puffing out her chest.
”You certainly are ‘special’ in many ways,” Sheena teased.
”What’s that supposed to mean, Sheena? That tone…”
”Oh? Would you like me to describe your ‘special’ qualities out loud, right here?” Sheena asked with a smirk.
”Hey,” I cut in. “Save the flirting for when it’s just us.”
Sheena had started teasing Sanae just as she was getting smug from Sugawa’s compliment. I had to shut it down. If Sheena started blabbing about how much of a pervert Sanae was in front of this crowd, people would think I’d specifically “trained” her that way. Which… well, let’s not go there.
”Hahaha, you guys are as close as ever,” Yuki laughed. “Oh, by the way, I heard Manda and his group got their asses handed to them by Koyama’s party last night. Apparently, they tried to ‘train’ ⁵ a mob onto them, but Koyama blocked them with Earth Wall magic. Manda’s group ended up stuck fighting the Kobolds they brought with them. They crawled back with some nasty injuries-I heard a few of them even had their fingers and ears bitten off.”
”Is that so… and who is this Koyama?” I asked.
”He’s the leader of the ‘Former Shut-ins’ ⁶ from the Animation Department,” Yuki said, sounding surprised. “You were power-leveling them, weren’t you? You didn’t know his name?”
”Ah, you mean ‘The Ninja Guy.’ I never actually learned his name. I just call him Gozaru ⁷ since he talks like a shinobi,” I replied.
So, he actually managed to repel the Trust Fund Group ⁸. Not bad, Ninja Guy. I glanced at Sheena; she was wearing a faint, satisfied smile. Her expression said it all: Well done. Those are my prize pigs I’ve been training.
”Ahaha, you really do call him Gozaru,” Yuki grinned. “Anyway, Koyama and his group have been recruiting the other former shut-ins since last night. They’re forming a guild to protect themselves from any retaliation by Manda’s group.”
”Using a successful counter-attack as a recruiting tool to build up their numbers… he’s smarter than he looks,” I noted.
It was a solid move. By demonstrating strength, people would naturally flock to them for protection. They were already a tight-knit group of outcasts, and since “The Ninja Guy” had helped them clear the 2nd Floor Guardian, the trust was already there. If they can get thirty or more people together, even the Trust Fund Group won’t be able to touch them.
”Yeah, they’ve really toughened up,” Yuki said. “I heard they even skipped meals for a week just to save up for magic books. That’s hardcore for someone who just leveled up. They might actually catch up to us soon.”
”That’ll be something to see,” I said. “If they’re that motivated, maybe I’ll move them up to the 4th Floor. I don’t want Oida and his cronies trying to bait them into joining their side with scraps of info.”
”Good idea,” Yuki agreed. “There are more parties reaching the 4th Floor now anyway; it’s about time we shared the next level of intel.”
”Make it happen. And what about the Kendo Club?” I asked.
I was curious about the joint party of the Kendo and Archery clubs, since Yuki had purposefully left them out of the loop this time.
”They’re suspicious since they weren’t invited to the meeting with the Baseball and Karate guys,” Yuki admitted. “I told them straight out that after what Arashiyama did, I couldn’t share info immediately. Dissatisfaction is brewing. Once they find out the other clubs got their girls back, the guys with girlfriends might just desert the group. That group has had it too easy up until now; they probably think they’ll be fine on their own.”
”I see. Keep an eye on the Kendo captain… Akatsu, right? Just watch him. I only want to recruit Akatsu and the ones loyal enough to stick with him when things get messy,” I said.
”Understood. I wanted Akatsu on our side too. If they split, I’ll make my move,” Yuki replied.
”Do that. Coach Sayama, if you and your guys could support Yuki, it would be a big help.”
”Of course,” the Coach said firmly. “You’ve given us info not just for the 4th and 5th floors, but all the way to the 6th and beyond. It’s the least we can do for our students’ safety.”
”The Coach is right,” Wakamiya added. “The baseball club is with Yuki-senpai from here on out.”
”The karate club too!” Hida yelled. “We always pay our debts! Osu!”
”Captain, you’re too loud, ssu,” Sugawa muttered. “But yeah, count me in too.”
”Good.”
I gave Yuki a quick nod. We had effectively brought the two biggest clubs under our umbrella. After getting a few more bits of gossip-like how Oida’s group had finally reached the 4th Floor and were already panicking-I moved on to business. I handed over a crate of fully charged mobile batteries from my Magic Pouch and took back their dead ones. Hida accepted his batteries like they were a gift from a king. Sayaka and the girls couldn’t stop giggling at him. Then again, Hida alone was taking six units. By the time I took everyone else’s, the table in our party room was going to be buried under charging cables. Knowing we usually spend three days at a time in the dungeon, most of them had bought multiple spares.
With the formalities out of the way, we parted with Yuki’s group and headed for the teleportation room. I’m hoping we can finish this floor in the next two days. But in this place, everything comes down to luck.
