Chapter 198 The Great Sanctuary

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

According to Goddess Yui-san’s confession, there were apparently several candidates who could have served as the vessel for Lady Marina-san’s reincarnation. The current Marina was simply the one best suited for the grand design, though Yui admitted she had prepared backup skills¹ just in case another candidate had been chosen. Hearing this, a nagging suspicion began to take root in Tanaka Yuuri: had there been multiple candidates for the master of the Familial Workshop² where the Princess was meant to be wed?

The group stood stunned by the Goddess’s casual admission of such whimsical plotting. Yuuri glanced at Marina, but she remained unphazed. She offered a small nod and a knowing smile. While the idea that her destiny was a mere plaything might have sparked resentment in others, the alternative was non-existence. Reincarnation was no charity; given her current status, winning the ‘selection’ was a point of pride.

Yuuri reached out and snagged the arm of the Goddess-who was currently hovering like a spoiled brat-and pulled her down onto his lap. Stripped of her divine power, Yui could neither foresee the move nor resist. She gave a startled shiver as he pinned her. For a heartbeat, she stared at him with dazed eyes before looking away sheepishly, a hot flush creeping up her neck.

”None of that matters now,” Yuuri said. “We’re the lucky ones because you gave us this life. In fact, didn’t you dodge a bullet by picking this Marina? Otherwise, you’d be the one in the vanguard right now, lugging around a Holy Sword³ and Holy Armor that no one was using.”

To have a second act prepared for a life that ended unfairly was a hell of a silver lining. Yuuri wasn’t about to let go of the Rainbow Goddess now, regardless of the ‘admissions process.’ He teased her further, questioning if any ‘replacement’ could handle Marina’s workload. Yui, lacking her former divine wisdom, practically jumped in a panic.

”Wait, what?!” Yui cried. “No way! I’m a total homebody! I don’t care how many skills I have, standing on the front lines to shield Yuuri-kun is not my vibe ssu!”

By stacking enough skills, Yui could have mimicked a knight’s poise, but she lacked any emotional connection to the techniques humans spent lifetimes perfecting. By joking that her choice was the best move she ever made, Yuuri signaled he held no grudge. Yui dropped her bravado and straightened her back, showing a modicum of respect to her comrades.

”So, if you’re filling the gaps in our lineup, are these support skills?” Yuuri asked.

”Basically,” Yui replied. “Reincarnator skills always have a massive advantage balanced by a specific drawback. It’s a support skill, but it’s better if I just show you desu.”

Yui slipped from his lap and floated a few inches above the floor, becoming perfectly still.

 ”Hey, wait-” Yuuri started.

They were inside the Familial Workshop, and Yui was about to trigger a skill powerful enough to clear a horde. Yuuri felt a wave of anxiety; was it safe to be this close? Yui didn’t hesitate. She closed her eyes and focused. An instant later, a sharp, high-frequency hum vibrated in Yuuri’s marrow. His magical vision whited out as a localized explosion of mana radiated from the Goddess.

”Is this affecting the entire workshop?” Yuuri asked, shielding his eyes. “It’s reaching the tentacle space too. The distances shouldn’t even be connected!”

”You noticed?” Yui said with a giggle. “I’m happy to see you’re growing so fast, Yuuri-kun!”

The other servants stood in awe. The force field didn’t damage the workshop; instead, pure mana flowed into everyone present, supercharging their existing protections.

”My body feels so much lighter!” Marina exclaimed.

”I can feel the power surging,” Ashley muttered.

The real kicker was the reach. The tentacle space was supposed to be immune to outside interference. If Yui’s skills could bypass those boundaries, it suggested that no cage could truly hold her. Sensing Yuuri’s unease, Yui deactivated the skill and fluttered back to his side, pressing herself against his arm.

”Don’t look at me like I’m a criminal,” Yui whispered. “The only reason it reached your space is because of the friend-or-foe identification. Yuuri-kun is my husband, so I could never do anything mean to you desu.”

Yui looked genuinely hurt, and Yuuri knew she wasn’t the type for a silent mutiny. Still, he realized that not even his workshop could contain this Goddess if she chose to leave.

”I hate to interrupt,” Marina said, stepping in, “but we need to get everyone up to speed. Does this system debuff enemies too?”

”Exactly!” Yui chirped. “I promise I’ll cry for your help before I ever think about hating you, Yuuri-kun! So please, just keep pampering me desu?”

Yui explained that the ally buff was insurance. The real purpose of The Great Sanctuary was a high-output force field that annihilated monsters in seconds. For humans, it functioned as a stasis field.

”Why didn’t you give that to me?” Marina asked, her voice tinged with a hint of desperation.

”Because it has a massive flaw,” Yui explained. “I design these so their potential is only reached through cooperation. The Great Sanctuary has a catch: once you activate it, you cannot move from that spot. Not even an inch.”

”Okay, yeah,” Marina admitted. “Being stuck in one place wouldn’t suit me at all.”

”But if she can’t move,” Ashley asked, “how do we cross the 83rd floor together?”

Yuuri looked at Yui, ready to call out the oversight, but she just gave a wicked giggle and squeezed his arm.

”I told you,” Yui teased. “It only works if you cooperate nano!”

 Summary:

Goddess Yui reveals that Marina was one of many candidates for reincarnation, designed specifically to fit Yuuri’s workshop. Yui demonstrates her new support skill, ‘The Great Sanctuary’, which provides massive buffs but anchors her to a single spot. The group begins to strategize how to advance to the 83rd floor given Yui’s immobility during skill activation.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The ‘Tentacle Space’ is usually an isolated dimension immune to outside magic.

 - Marina and Yui have a complex priestess-goddess relationship that is now transitioning into co-servants.

 - The ‘Holy Sword’ and ‘Holy Armor’ are Marina’s primary combat skills.

 - Reincarnators in this world are given missions with powerful but flawed skills to encourage cooperation

 —

 Character Insight:

Yui shows a mix of vulnerability and overwhelming power; her skill’s ability to permeate the workshop boundaries reminds Yuuri that she is still fundamentally a Goddess. Marina struggles with her desire for efficiency versus her preference for active combat.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The author uses Yui’s ‘indoorsy’ (hikikomori) nature as a meta-joke about the difficulty of balancing powerful characters in a story.
