Chapter 148 Himuro Yukiko ㉓
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Storm Sword-Kamaitachi¹!”
”Sonic Blade!”
Leonardo and I unleashed a barrage of flying slashes, but the enemy drifted through the air, evading both with insulting ease.
”Tch. This is why I hate fighting things with wings,” Leonardo spat.
He had a point. Nailing a target in the open sky was leagues harder than hitting one on the ground, especially when the bastard had the entire atmosphere to play with. He could slip out of our effective range whenever he felt like it.
”What’s the matter? What’s the matter? You haven’t managed to graze Me even once!”
”You arrogant prick…” Leonardo muttered.
”Then try this on for size,” I said.
I loosed a Fire Lance targetting Hræsvelgr. The beast was an ice-type spirit; a fire-attribute attack should have been devastating – assuming it actually connected. As expected, the creature veered away at the last second. Damn. Its evasion stats were through the roof.
”Silent Casting… and you release sorcery without a single motion? Not bad for an inferior species!” Blizzard shouted from above.
”Yeah, yeah. Thanks for the vote of confidence,” I replied.
Blizzard sneered down at us, his tone oozing the kind of condescension that made my skin crawl.
”Here’s a gift in return. Catch!”
Massive icicles (tsurara) plummeted from the sky like crystalline spears.
”Whoa!” Leonardo yelled, diving to the left.
”Tch!” I scrambled in the opposite direction.
He wasn’t just a summoner; Blizzard himself was a damn powerhouse.
”Fuhahahahaha! Close! So very close, Sieben! Had you been born a demon, I might have actually taken you on as a subordinate! But you are a lesser being. You will never measure up to the demonic race – not in strength, not in magic, and certainly not in lifespan! And above all, you completely lack our nobility!”
Blizzard’s laughter echoed across the battlefield. Nobility? Really? I felt a dark, involuntary smile tugging at my lips.
”Hm? What’s so funny? It is an objective fact that we are the superior race,” Blizzard said, narrowing his eyes.
”Oh, sure. Humans definitely have shorter lives than demons. I’ll give you that,” I said. “But…”
”But what?”
”Strength and magic can be surpassed. And nobility? You’re the one lecturing me on class? You vulgar, low-life piece of shit.”
I nearly snorted. Nobility was a matter of character, not bloodlines. I’d seen kings who were arrogant, incompetent, and didn’t possess a single shred of actual dignity. Of course, if you asked me if I was noble, my answer would be a flat “No.”
”And for the record? You aren’t stronger than me,” I added.
”Wh-what did you say?! You… there is a limit to how much I will be insulted! I’m going to kill you! I’ll tear the limbs from your torso, drag your entrails through the dirt, and make you regret every breath you ever took!”
For a guy named Blizzard, he had a hell of a short fuse.
Still… I looked at him and thought of my remaining classmates. Maybe I should take his advice for them. Making them suffer until they beg for death sounded about right. Just killing them wouldn’t be nearly satisfying enough.
”Well, let’s get a little serious, shall we?” I whispered.
I really needed to break this habit of holding back. It was a flaw I had to fix. I sheathed my greatsword and drew a one-handed blade instead. The steel was etched with strange, chevron-shaped grooves at regular intervals.
It was a whip-sword.
”Hmph. Changing your weapon won’t – what?!”
I snapped my wrist, and the blade segments pulled apart, extending into a lethal, metallic whip.
”Blizzard, I’ll give you one warning. If you want to stay alive, get off that Hræsvelgr,” I said.
”Heh… Fuhahahahaha! Is that the best you can do? A bluff! I’m not falling for it!”
I let out a long, weary sigh. It was truly pathetic when someone couldn’t even grasp the gap in their own power.
”Fine. Martial Art: Kuchinawa Serpent².”
The whip-sword came alive, undulating through the air like a predatory snake. It lunged toward Hræsvelgr, moving with a grace that made it impossible to track. Kuchinawa was a technique designed to ensnare prey in its coils, never letting go once it tasted blood.
”Whoa! Higher, Hræsvelgr!”
Blizzard barked the command, frantically trying to gain altitude. Normally, getting out of the whip’s physical reach would have saved him. Unfortunately for him, my whip-sword was telescopic. As long as I fed it mana, it would extend to the horizon.
”D-damn it! Higher, go higher! Wait – what?!”
The whip-sword coiled tightly around Hræsvelgr’s leg. Blizzard clicked his tongue, but he still didn’t look truly panicked. He looked down at me with a smirk.
”Hey, you inferior brat. You really think you can drag us down? You don’t have the strength to restrain a Hræsvelgr. If anything, you’re the one who’s going to get yanked into the sky! You’ve dug your own grave!”
”I’m not planning on dragging you anywhere,” I said calmly. “Roar, Thunder Roar Sword!”
The whip-sword was suddenly wreathed in blinding lightning. A deafening crack of thunder exploded from the metal. The current surged instantly through the coils and into Hræsvelgr.
The beast let out a piercing wail. Blizzard, still mounted on its back, was caught in the discharge.
”Gyaaaaaaaaah!”
”That’s a thunderclap strong enough to slaughter a Kraken,” I said as the smoke began to rise. “I told you that you should have gotten off. You really should learn to listen to people, Blizzard.”
Bathed in a lethal discharge of electricity, Blizzard and Hræsvelgr plummeted toward the earth like a lead weight.
* * *
I made my way toward the impact site. Hræsvelgr had vanished, leaving only Blizzard lying in a crater, smoke curling off his charred armor.
”Nu… guh… cough… What… what was that… just now…?”
Oh, he was still breathing. He was tougher than he looks.
”As if I’d tell you,” I said, standing over him. “More importantly… how does it feel to be looked down upon by the very ‘inferior species’ you were just mocking?”
”Dam… nit… don’t screw with me…” Blizzard spat, staggering back to his feet.
I guess the title of Ice Demon General isn’t just for show. He was still standing.
”I will admit… you are stronger than me. But what about your friends? They’ve likely been ground into meat by now – “
”Papa-!”
A high-pitched voice interrupted him. Leki was sprinting toward us. In her hand, she was dragging something far too massive to be called a mere club.
”Impossible… You killed a Frost Giant…?” Blizzard gasped.
”Yep! That old guy was just big. He was super weak!” Leki chirped, dropping the giant’s weapon with a heavy thud.
”Darling, I have returned,” Lil announced, appearing beside me.
”Sieben, we’re back,” Mihiro added.
The two of them were completely unscathed. Lil was even balancing a massive, transparent crystal on her shoulder.
”Wh-wha… there’s no way… NO WAY!” Blizzard screamed.
”It was a bit of a struggle, but we took down the other Hræsvelgr, Sieben. I even got the Dragon Slayer title for it. I’ve got the carcass stashed in the Item Box, obviously.”
”We won safely thanks to you. By the way, is this useful for anything?” Lil asked, dropping the Crystal Golem’s core onto the grass.
”This can’t be… those were the highest-ranking summons in my arsenal!” Blizzard shrieked, his voice cracking.
”My companions are just stronger. It’s as simple as that,” I said.
”Damn it… but I still have – Gya!?”
I buried a heavy body blow into Blizzard’s gut. While he was doubled over, gasping for air, I reached out and Snatched his Summoning Magic. I’d gone back and forth on whether to take his Ice Magic instead, but his Status showed that his Summoning was at a much higher level.
”Hey, Sieben.”
”Whoa – ?! …What is it, Leonardo?”
The guy nearly made me jump out of my skin.
”Was it really that surprising? Anyway, Sieben… do you mind if I deliver the finishing blow?” Leonardo asked.
”Hmm? Go right ahead,” I said, stepping back.
”Sorry for stealing your thunder,” he grunted.
”Don’t worry about it.”
I thought about the villagers and the soldiers who had lost their lives for absolutely nothing because of this monster. It was only right that Leonardo be the one to end it.
”This is for the people you slaughtered!” Leonardo roared.
He brought his blade down in a heavy, diagonal slash. The weakened Blizzard couldn’t even raise an arm to defend himself; he simply collapsed into the dirt as the steel bit deep.
”To think… that I… an Ice Demon General… would fall to a lesser…”
Those were the final words of the man who had brought so much agony to this land.
===
Natsumi: “I Snatched it, but I wonder if there’s actually a use for this…”
Lil, Leki, and Mihiro: “””Who knows?”””

Character Insight:
Sieben shows growth by recognizing his flaw of holding back and deciding to be more brutal toward his former classmates. His detachment from ‘nobility’ highlights his pragmatic, non-heroic worldview.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author used a reference to ‘Ma-be’ (M’Quve) from Gundam in the end note, implying the ‘jar’ (bookmarks/stars) is a ‘good thing’.
